Abstract

Pine (Pinus merkusii) is tree species that provides timber and gum rosin. To meet the needs of wood and non wood (gum rosin) products, planting by using superior or high quality seeds are needed. Seed procurements for planting are obtained from seedling seed orchard (SSO). However, Cijambu’s SSO was attacked by pine woolly aphid (Pineus boerneri). Therefore, assessment of Cijambu’s SSO needs to be done to evaluate the severity pest attacks that could affect to the quality and the quantity of seed production. Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method is one of the methods to assess the health level of a stand. The number of trees found in all cluster plots in Cijambu’s SSO were 270 trees. Based on the value of the VCR (Visual Crown Rating), the trees located in all cluster plot have health level between low to high. Based on the value of the VCR showed 38.52% (104 trees) having VCR’s value was high, 49.26% (133 trees) having VCR’s value was middle; 12.22% (33 trees) having VCR’s value was low; and no tree having very low VCR’s value. The average of VCR’s value in all cluster plots were 3.25 and classified as middle health. Based on the value of TDLI (Tree Damage Level Index) from 270 trees in all cluster plot showed that 189 trees (70.00%) in healthy condition; 69 trees (25.56%) in slight damage condition; 11 trees (4.07%) in middle damage condition; and 1 tree (0.37%) in heavy damage condition. The value of damage in all cluster plots (ALI) was 261.22 and classified as in health condition. The trees located in all cluster plots were mostly suitable to be seed sources as 242 trees (89.63%), while 28 trees (10.37%) were not suitable for seed sources. Keywords: Forest Health Monitoring, Pinus merkusii, seedling seed orchard, Tree Damage Level Index, Visual Crown Rating

Abstract

The need of bamboo raw materials, betung bamboo for instance, keeps increasing in line with the rising rate of population growth and science development. Therefore, stands of bamboo clumps with sustainable productivity and quality, are absolutely required. One of betung bamboo’s characteristics is presence of adventitious roots in branches of bamboo culm. The problem is that many of such branches often have dry adventitious roots which are brown in color. Based on such condition, research of the effect of presence of dry adventitious roots, need to be conducted, as well as the effect of growth media, on the growth of bamboo branch cuttings. The research objective is to examine the effect of bamboo branches with dry adventitious roots and planting media on growth of betung bamboo’s branch cuttings. The media used are soil, rice husk charcoal and compost. The experiment which used factorial RAK design showed that planting media significantly affected leaf numbers, whereas adventitious roots had significant effect on all measured parameters, including shoot length, shoot numbers, leaf numbers, oven dry weight of roots, and survival percentage. Media with the highest leaf numbers were mixture of soil and rice husk charcoal. Keywords: adventitious root, Dendrocalamus asper, planting media, branch cutting

Abstract

Sentang (Azadirachta excelsa) is one of fast-growing tree species which is resistant to disease and pest. It also has good quality of timber with high economic value. Sentang planting can be integrated with meniran (Phyllanthus sp.). Planting in the agroforestry system will impact positively and negatively to both plants. The aim of this research was to analyze growth of sentang in agroforestry system. This research was conducted in Cultivation for Conservation Unit of Medicinal Plants Biofarmaka, IPB, Dramaga, West Java, Indonesia. The experimental design used was a completely randomized design to analysis sentang growth. The treatment applied was P0= monoculture and P1 = agroforestry. The total height growth and total stem diameter on monoculture are not significantly different with agroforestry. However, the high growth of sentang on the agroforestry was higher than monoculture in the first month, and the stem diameter on the agroforestry system was lower in the second month. Agroforestry systems do not provide any real effect on the growth of the canopy and rooting sentang except in diameter of root. Keywords: agroforestry, Azadirachta excelsa, plant dimension, rooting system

Abstract

Sengon is a fast growing species that popular to be cultivated in Indonesia. It can be planted in agroforestry system with agricultural crop such as upland rice (padi gogo). Agroforestry system between sengon and upland rice is vulnerable to fungi attack. Micro fungi that may attack upland rice and young sengon is Rhizoctonia sp. This research aimed to analyze the interaction of plants in agroforestry between sengon and upland rice as well as Rhizoctonia sp. attack. The experiment was performed in community forest in Cikarawang village which dominated by 2 years old sengon. Agroforestry system in cikarawang village affected significantly to harvest productivity of upland rice but not affected to growth of sengon. Statistical test performed also showed that Rhizoctonia sp. attack to upland rice did not affect the harvesting result, but only affected to plant morphology. Keywords: dimension, fungi, rice, productivity

Abstract

Forest management activity wich applied selective cutting with line planting (TPTJ) caused disturbed on forest, especially due to the process of making the planting lines. Natural forest gives respond to disturbance by recovery of its vegetation. This research aimed to measure the potential seedlings by vegetation recovery process in logged over area and determine both of the diversity and evenness of communities. The result showed that the composition of the seedlings at the begining of a recovery in the cropping were not only pioneer, but also kinds of Dipterocarpaceae and non-Dipterocarpaceae. The entire lines is dominated by the pioneers types, such as: Macaranga gigantea, Ganua glaberrima, Aporosa apriniana and Polyalthia rumphii. The family with the most number of types found namely: Phyllanthaceae, Myrtaceae and Dipterocarpaceae. The value of diversity index all of community belongs to moderate ( 2 < H’ < 3) and value equity (e’) belongs to high. The entire community of between the lines have low IS value wich its IS < 50% that means tampering with the seedling in each line has a significant different due to the forest examined was divided into several blocks of high fells. Keywords : climax, diversity, equity, pioneer, selective cutting with line planting

Abstract

Agroforestry system has been considered as one of the effective ways of the plantation for increasing a production and securing the environment as well as plays an important role in the social and economic development. Mindi development has been widely practiced in community forests but the agroforestry system is only limited to local knowledge obtained from old generation. This causes the people's forests to tend to be unable to survive due to the demands of the people's food needs. Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea L.) had an important crop as a potential source of food and substitute for wheat flour and potential to be planted under Mindi trees (Melia azedarach L.) which had also potential as an alternative tree planting for the community forest. This research was aimed to 1) analyze the growth of Mindi trees and the productivity of arrowroot under mindi trees compared to monoculture system, 2) analyze the nutrient content of arrowroot under mindi trees compared to monoculture system. The experiment used a complete randomized design (CRD) with the agroforest under mindi trees and monoculture system as a factor. The result of growth in mindi showed that there is no significant difference in height, diameter, and canopy variable in agroforestry and monoculture plantation system while the root variable had significant difference among agroforestry and monoculture system. The physicochemical and nutrients content of arrowroot were diverse whereas there is no significant difference between the two system tested. Keywords: agroforestry, growth, productivity, fisikokimia, soil nutrient
