Abstract

Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is a plant that quite popular and widely grown in West Kalimantan. The purpose of this study is to discover the concentration of papaya leaf extract (Carica papaya L.), as a pest controller in mustard (B. juncea L.) and investigate the effect of the intensity of pest attacks on mustard (B. juncea L.). The study was conducted around the greenhouse and the laboratory of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University Tanjungpura, Pontianak in November 2011 to February 2012. The research used Completely Randomized Design consisting of 4 treatments and 2 controls (positive and negative) with 3 replications. Papaya leaf extract concentrations used were 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The results showed that pets that attack the mustard plant are crop controlling (Crocidolomia binotalis). The concentration of papaya leaf extract 100% was capable of controlling C. binotalis attack. 100% concentration showed the best results at the first week to the fourth week (0%), compared to a concentration of 25%, 50% and 75%. The use of papaya leaf extract 100% is a good number for of the mustard plant as a natural insecticide with number 10 strands of fresh mustard leaves, fresh weight, dry weight of 50.68 grams and 2.1 grams.

Abstract

Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi has an important role to help the growth of pineapple plants (Ananas comosus). The study of inventory of VAM fungi on rhizosphere of pineapple had been conducted for three months from April to July 2013. The research aims to know types of VAM fungi on rhizosphere of pineapple in peat land. Some stages were used in conducting the research that were soil sampling from rhizosphere of A.comosus in Rasau Jaya Umum, isolation and identification of VAM fungal spores, counting number of fungal spores for every 100 gram soil sampling and counting root infection percentage. The research finding showed that VAM fungal spores were Glomus, Acaulospora, and Gigaspora genera. The percentage of pineapple root infected by VAM fungi were in mild level with 33%.

Abstract

Paramas mountain forests were rich in source of biological diversity. The source has been benefited by locals as food. The purpose of this study was to investigate the type of plant parts used by villagers as a food sources in Pangkalan Buton.Mount Peramas, Sukadana, district of North Kayong. The study was conducted for two months, October to November 2012. It employed snowball and semi sructured interview. The research found that villagers of Pangkalan Buton, Peramas mountain, Sukadana, district of North Kayong have benefited 47 plants species from 27 families as food source. Family Euophorbiaceae was a plant of the most widely used by the villagers, 14 percent for stem and 53 percent at fruit. Group of plants whose fruits used as a source of food amounted to 49 percent. Generally the villagers directly eat the fruit as a food source. The plants typically could be found in the forests of Peramas Mountain, Sukadana, district of North Kayong.

Abstract

Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) need to be propagated since this plant has many benefits, it can be applied to produce fuel, biodiesel and traditional medicine. The cultivation of this plant can be utilized by stem cuttings, however the process can be failed if the root was not formed. The use of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) and onion extract which contain natural and synthetic growth regulators are needed to stimulate the growth of cutting roots. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of onion extracts and Indol Butyric Acid (IBA) for the growth of stem cuttings of jatropha. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in University of Tanjungpura from October 2012 to January 2013. This study employed a randomized factorial design of 2 factors. The first factor was onion extracts and the second one was IBA. The concentrations in onion extracts were 0% , 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% and IBA were 0 ppm, 10 ppm, 20 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm. Each treatment was repeated 3 times as a result there were 75 experimental units. The treatment with 100% of onion extracts produced the highest number of leaves (10.46 strands), air dried basis of shoots (44.91 g) and dry basis of shoots (7.39 g), while the effect of treatment with IBA produced the best number of roots (16.93 strands), air dried basis of roots (1.23 g) and dry basis of roots (0.51 g)
