Abstract

The aims of this research entitled “The Geography of Dayak Dialect in Landak Regency, West Kalimantan” were to describe lexical variation, calculate the difference in lexical variation between observation points, map lexical variation, and create isogloss documents lexically. The form of this research was descriptive qualitative; the source of data for the Dayak language used in Landak was the native speakers of Dayak language. The methods used for data analysis were synchronous comparative method and triangular comparative technique between villages; while the formula used to analyze the data was the Dialectometric. The results from the data analysis, difference in lexical variation calculation between observation of Dayak language in Landak regency indicated that there found language differences, dialect differences, sub-dialect differences speech differences and no differences. Different lexical variations existed in the study area. There found 2 languages from the mapping of lexical variations of the Dayak language in Landak Regency. The first language included 4 observation points (Air Besar/Serimbu) called as S language (Serimbu) and the second language at observation points ((1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 / Sompak, Darit, Landak, Pahoman, Sengah Temila, and Mandor ) is referred to as the K language (Kanayatn). The K (Kanayatn) languge itself has 2 dialects, namely first dialect at the Observation point (3) Landak (members of Landak), the second dialect at the point of observation (1,2,5,6,7) Darit dialect (members of Sompak, Darit, Pahoman, Sengah Temila, and darit). The lexical isogloss documents separated the different language area with the percentage of 80.1%-100%; dialect areas 50.1%-80%; sub-dialect area 30.1%-50%; regional different in speech 20.1%-50%; and no difference with the range of 0-20%.

Abstract

This study is aimed to explore the use transition signals used by EFL students in essay writing in higher education level. Particularly, this essay will be conducted to English Language Education Study Program students at University of Widya Gama Mahakam Samarinda. This research is a qualitative study with content analysis research design where twenty-six comparison and contrast essays of the third semester students were analyzed by using coding which indicates transition signals used by students. Additionally, in-depth interview also applied to the students who are considered as less active users of transition signals in their writing in order to figure out deeper on what difficulties they found during writing the essay. The findings of this research reveal three major result i.e. most of students are succeed to use compare and contrast type of transition signals to compose their comparison and contrast essay, the students mostly use time order transition signals to make their essay coherent, and two out of twenty-six students have no transition signals to be used on their essays. Result from interview shows that the students still lack of understanding toward when, where, and what type of transition signals can be used for certain context. Pedagogical implication is discussed further in this research.

Abstract

This research examines first-person personal pronouns which arise in political speeches given by Obama in his victory as American President in 2008 and 2012. Employing qualitative and quantitative methods, this research explores the occurrences of first personal pronouns to reveal the forms and its discourse function through political speeches. Abstracting from 458 personal pronouns found in Obama’s speeches, 272 pronouns are identified as first personal pronouns. The findings of the first personal pronouns employed in Obama speeches illustrated that Obama produced pronoun we and its variants, 183 times, and pronoun I and its variants, 89 times. Obama exploited singular personal pronoun to convey personally his deep appreciation and gratefulness, personal experiences, personal professional experiences, his personal argumentative opinions, hopes, and his commitment as well. The use of inclusive we and its variants indicate Obama’s desire to shares responsibility and construct nationalistic spirit, togetherness, equality, publicly assertion about the political situation, and any challenges they probably face in the future. Additionally, by employing exclusive we, Obama asserts his political plans, commitment, political experiences during the election, and serious concern of reconciliation.

Abstract

There are limited studies that concern the institutional policies and issues of blended learning adoption. By using a case study, this study explores blended learning implementation and three main issues of adoption. The issues are “institutional strategy, structure, and support that portrayed the stages of the blended learning adoption. The data indicated that the blended learning implementation of learning increases the involvement use of technology by the learner. But there is still no proportionality in the enforcement between F2F and online learning goals and activities. The data were obtained by observation, semi-structured interview, and documentation. Based on the result, the institution under investigation still in stage 1 (awareness/exploration stage) of the blended learning adoption stage. By doing the research on the three participants who adopt blended learning, it can be concluded that the institution has not met the requirements for implementing blended learning at higher stages because many aspects have not been fulfilled and need to be improved for future implementation. Therefore, the researchers expect that this research can be a reference regarding aspects that must be fulfilled for better implementation.

Abstract

This study explored the difficulty index, the terms for the category for reading text level, and cognitive levels of reading texts in the English textbook, Interlanguage, for Senior High School grade 12. The primary aim was to determine the extent to which the degree of the available different categories of reading text levels included the cognitive level of questions. Through the readability test formulas for difficulty index and a checklist based on revised Bloom Taxonomy for cognitive skills, 11 reading texts completed with 56 reading comprehension questions were analyzed. The result revealed that the Interlanguage textbook contained four different categories of reading level such as difficult, fairly difficult, plain, and fairly easy to read. The textbook had in the average category of fairly difficult to read for difficulty index and contained fewer HOTS–based questions than LOTS ones (34% < 66%). Besides, higher reading text levels included fewer HOTS-based questions than those of lower ones. This means a higher level of cognitive skill of questions may appear in any text with a different level of difficulty index. This suggests that the English textbook should be revised to have more HOTS-based question items for developing the students’ high cognitive levels.

Abstract

A family has a role in supporting bilingual or multilingual children. In acquiring English for instance, family language policy is likely to shape the development of children bilingualism or multilingualism. Through a qualitative study in a case study design, the language ideologies of two bi-/multilingual families in Palembang were investigated and explored. The participants of this study were the Zahra and the Najwa families who brought up their children in more than one language including English. The data were collected through ethnographic interviews with the parents, grandmother, and children. Thematic analysis was used in analyzing the data of this study. The raw data were coded and classified into categories to derive big major themes regarding ideological factors that shaped language policy. The derived themes were then interpreted descriptively. The results indicated that there were some ideological factors found that contributed to the shaping of the language policy of those two families, such as social values, economical values, political values, cultural values, parents' knowledge toward language acquisition, and bi-/multilingualism. The findings of this study suggest that families need to provide support for their children in their bilingual or multilingual journey. Furthermore, stakeholders and professionals should play a role in the choice of language used in education as well as provide considerable support and assistance for language policy in family domain

Abstract

Subtitles has always been seen as a savior by a lot of people because it breaks all language barriers and made various films and series to be more understandable and watchable. However, the act of subtitling is not as easy as other people think. There are so many restraints in subtitling. One of those restrains is cultural differences in translating swear words. This research aims to obtain data concerning the subtitling strategies of swear words that are found in the subtitles of Deadpool One and Deadpool Two films. The descriptive qualitative method is employed because this research relies on the data obtained from subtitles, which are non-numerical data, and the data analysis will be served descriptively. The results of this research show that according to Gottlieb's (1992) theory, the subtitlers for Deadpool One and Deadpool Two used six different subtitling strategies in each film. The subtitler in Deadpool One tends to use the paraphrase and deletion strategies, followed by condensation, decimation, and transfer, with expansion being the least employed. The subtitler in Deadpool Two, on the other hand, employs deletion as the most used strategy. The subtitler's next most used strategies are paraphrase, condensation, decimation, and transfer; the least commonly employed strategy is expansion.

Abstract

Grammar instruction in foreign language teaching has been identified by most studies as one aspect that plays an important role in promoting the learning process of reading, writing, speaking and understanding a foreign language. Consequently, secondary and foreign language teaching of grammar is seen as a topic of debate. So academics and teachers seem to have been willing to work out the proper way of teaching grammar. This condition contributes to a likely cause of uncertainty for teachers and students, and then brings researchers to a rigorous theoretical discussion on the question of how grammar should be presented: explicitly or implicitly. The purpose of the present case study was to gather information into the implementation of the implicit grammar teaching strategy enrolled in senior high school. To this extent, interview sessions and observation were used to obtain all the data required for the study. The results, in a broad sense, confirmed that the teacher showed positive views on the implementation of the implicit grammar teaching strategy. However, classroom practices were quite different from the findings of previous related research consistent with the supremacy of either Focus on Form or Focus on Forms in the delivery of lesson materials. As an implication, this study encouraged Indonesian English teachers to start considering the implementation of implicit grammar teaching strategy so that students could be directed to the language acquisition cycle instead of the language learning.

Abstract

Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this study was an attempt to investigate the metafunctions of language which are realized by register category of field, tenor, and mode existing simultaneously in texts. Employing qualitative approach with the use of discourse semantics analysis, two different selected newspaper texts were purposefully chosen as the source of data. Following the orientation of SFL, the writer modified the texts into some sentences and clauses which were subsequently analysed and compared regarding the objectives in question. The result of analysis shows that the field of texts was mostly concerned with physical actions and events employing both direct and indirect speech for the sake of information. Meanwhile, in terms of mode, Text I was more rhetoric and more detail in describing the event than text II. Yet, the level of modality in both texts was low and low in which there were not many actions of getting other people to do things. Aside from those two, this analysis revealed that the mode of both texts mostly used anaphoric types of referential cohesion indicating written mode. In the meantime, Text I had more number of conjunctions implying more explanative in giving information and cause and effect relation of the information. Of greater importance of this finding was that a paradigmatic description of context implying a meaning, system, and metafunctions of language and its pedagogical implication in language teaching.

Abstract

Utilizing technology in the classroom characterizes the 21st century teachers. Therefore, teachers are demanded to be able to use technology in pedagogical practices in order to fulfill their students’ needs facing rapidly digitalized life. This study was designed to investigate the perceptions of a group of in-service English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers who studied at a Teacher Profession Education program at a state university, concerning the application of technology within challenges they faced during their study. This study used qualitative research with narrative approach as a strategy of inquiry. The data were obtained by using a semi-structure interview with the in-service teachers and documentation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that the participants generally perceived positively the technology integration taught by their university instructors during their study time at the Teacher Profession Education program although there was a negative response when they were firstly introduced with the technology. It might have been caused by their lack of technological knowledge. The result also revealed that the participants found it challenging when it came to the use of novel technology as introduced and applied by their university instructors. In addition, their own integration of technology during their Teaching Practice was a challenge due to the students’ low motivation to engage in the online learning activity which was the mode of learning. The findings of this study suggest that teachers need to advance their skills and knowledge to utilize technology in supporting their pedagogical practices.
