Abstract

The present study explored the relationship between collective self-esteem and cultural orientation. It was hypothesized that one’s collective self-esteem or one’s judgment of being a member of one’s ethnic group would predict their cultural orientation. Collective self-esteem or one’s judgment of one being a member of one’s ethnic group had 4 dimensions: private, public, membership and importance; cultural orientation also had 4 dimensions: horizontal individualism, horizontal collectivism, vertical individualism, and vertical collectivism. One-hundred and fifty-nine students participated in the present study. Public collective self-esteem positively predicted horizontal individualism (β = .217) and vertical individualism (β = .224); private collective self-esteem positively predicted vertical collectivism, (β = .273) and negatively predicted vertical individualism (β = -.234). Cultural factors, particular to the Indonesian context, need to be taken into account in regard to interpreting the collected data.

Abstract

While innovation is important in our daily life, as a matter of fact many innovation has failed to be accepted. Word of mouth has been wellknown as one among the most effective strategy for innovation adoption. Word of mouth (WOM) is defined as one example of communication pattern which involve individuals or groups, when they talk about their preferences about some product. Despite the importance of WOM, little attention has been given to understand how and why effective WOM induce adoption of innovation products. The purpose of this research is to explore the contributions of innovation attributes on WOM, using the diffusion of innovation theorethical framework. These innovation attributes are measured from the perception of the user of the product. In this research, the innovative product used as the case is the Dropbox application. The data of 156 respondents of Dropbox user was collected using the accidental sampling techinique. Using the multiple linear regression analysis, the result shows that amount of WOM can be influenced by how easily the benefit of the innovation can be seen (observability attribute) and how simplicity the innovation is (complexity attribute). Meanwhile for the valence of WOM (positive or negative) is influenced only with the observability attribute. The research indicates that it is important for companies to show the result of their innovation through opinion leader who have close connection with the target of consumer so the observability attribute from the innovative product can be seen. Companies also need to consider the complexity attribute of their innovation. Attribute of complexity can indeed increase the amount of WOM but might lead to the negative discussion which would be contraproductive for the adoption of the innovation.

Abstract

A midwife is one who is engaged in the profession of public services, especially health. Interest and demand for the services of a midwife continues to increase every year, especially in Indonesia. Midwifery profession itself is a profession with a very heavy job demands, including the welfare and safety of patients. In addition, midwives are also required to perform its role as a wife and homemaker. Both of these roles must be lived well. Therefore, a midwife should be able to maintain her physical and psychological condition, otherwise it can caused stress, fatigue, physical or psychological disorders, or can even jeopardize a patient safety. The demand characteristics and capabilities expected of a midwife in Psychology concepts is integrated in the emotional intelligence concept. The importance of all the capabilities which should be owned by a midwife looks more in line with the concept described by Bar-On who explained emotional intelligence as a synergy between the five large-scale, namely the ability of intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management and general mood. In addition, the type of personality is also considered to have an important role in the profession of midwifery in addition to emotional intelligence. The purpose of this research is to examine the emotional intelligence and personality type of midwives who practice independently. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach by the case study method with 3 participants. This study uses the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) measurement tool, which contains 133 items to measure five aspects of emotional intelligence and the NEO PI-R personality measurement tool as well as an interview guide. The results show that emotional intelligence plays an important role in all three participants profession. All three participants have a good understanding of the concept of emotional intelligence, but all three do not apply well in their work or in everyday life, they intended to show their personality type which is contrast to their understanding of the emotional intelligence concept.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the most number of HIV cases on ODHA (People who live with HIV/AIDS) women found among housewives who are infected through heterosexual intercourse. Most housewives know their ODHA status after their husbands passed away, which directly cause disenfranchised grief because the grief could not be freely expressed, in result of negative thinking of HIV it self. This research is done prior to analyze adaptation process of housewives who experienced disenfranchised grief along with the HIV disease.Research is done through qualitative approach with case study method to 3 participants. Result of the research shows that acceptance stage can be reached if each individual get enough support from environment and have high extraversion level of personality. On the other hand, participant who does not get any social support together with high neuroticism level and low extraversion personality, is likely not able to cope up with current condition, therefore adaptation process still on denial stage and be accompanied with number of irrational beliefs. However, enough social support does not guarantee acceptance stage is going to occur if it is followed by impulsive, childish, and self centered personality. Further result of research shows that individual with positive self acceptance generate higher quality of life.

Abstract

Premarital sexual permissiveness (PSP) is defined by Reiss (1964) as the degree of acceptance of various level of physical intimacy in premarital heterosexual relationship. The purpose of this study is to explore the PSP of emerging adults in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. Due to globalization era, it is assumed that emerging adults have more permissive attitude towards premarital sexual behavior and a higher-level PSP than the previous study. Participants of this study are 426 emerging adults, both male and female, heterosexual, and live in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tagerang, or Bekasi, collected by convenience sampling technique. The 52-item Guttman scale for measuring PSP in this study have been tested its validity (.943) and reliability (.868). Using T score, multiple regression and linear regression analysis techniques, this study reports: (a) the PSP level of participants are low, (b) there are 5 variables that significantly effected participant’s PSP, that is male, lived only with father, doing religious rituals, live the teaching of religion, and have a friend (reference group) who had sexual intercourse before marriage, and (c) the PSP cannot be used to predict participants sexual behavior.
