Abstract

Cancer is one of the deadliest disease in Indonesia. The most common cancer in Indonesia is breast cancer. Breast cancer is more dominated by women rather than men, where the ratio is 9 to 1. Women that are diagnose with breast cancer and had surgery but also undergone treatment for five years or more are called the breast cancer survorl. The breast cancer survivors ususally have some physical diturbance that caused by the medication and also have psychological disorder cause by the removal of the breast. With the existence of interference issues of the breast cancer survivor, researchers made a psychological test to see the adjustment of a young adult women that is survive from the breast cancer. This test is called PDWSKP. For making PDWSKP researchers takes 31 respondents but only 18 respondets that can be used. This respondent was obtained through snowball sampling technique. In the preparation of PDWSKP, researchers used the theory of Huber and Runyon (1984) as a basis that consists of five domains. This 5 domain that had been made to be more contextual by putting in the result of interview with breast cancer survivors. The result of PDWSKP shows that from 25 items that have been tested by using reliability analysis all of the items are reliable (R= .880) but not externally valid when it is correlated with SWLS questionnare (r= -.129, p=609). From the calculation of corrected item total correlation, there are 4 items that’s not internally valid.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the impact of faking responses on measurement reliability of psychological scales. Experiments were conducted on 200 subjects who were asked to complete Five Factors Personality Scale (BFI-44) with two different instructions. First instruction asked subjects to respond within a neutral condition, whereas second instruction asked subjects to respond to the scale when they are participating in employment selection (motivated conditions). Comparisons of alpha coefficient between these conditions suggest that faking responses does not interfere measurement reliability. Pure score proportion on observed score was unaffected by presence of faking responses. However, using the state-trait model, it is found that untainted score proportion on observed scores are more related to state score compared to the trait score as main measurement target. Results of separated analysis model toward personality factors shown that Agreeableness and Openness are factors which were relatively resistant to faking responses. Trait score proportion of these factors still large although faking responses were presence.

Abstract

As a developing country, Indonesia still struggles to manage its mental health issues. In 2014 the Indonesian government passed the Mental Health Law after five years of delaying, and its goal is to make sure people with mental health issues will be treated better, but there are some unresolved issues such as the economic barriers to gain better mental health care, the social and political unrest, unique but challenging geographic location, the stigma and improper treatments for the mental health patients/clients, and mental health is not a priority yet in many Indonesians. There is also an issue of the failure of reporting mental health related problems, especially in the early stages when minimum intervention would alleviate the symptoms. Expressive writing (EW) as a new intervention could answer some of these circumstances in Indonesian context. This research will use controlled field experiment (pre-test post-test design) with psychodynamic interviewing to see the effectiveness of the expressive writing intervention. To answer experimental hypothesis, t-test will be conducted to evaluate differences between the expressive writing intervention and control writing groups. In analyzing the psychodynamic interview results, the focus will be on moderators of the working mechanism of expressive writing intervention. In conclusion, expressive writing can be a valuable addition to the conventional psychotherapy because it is cost effective, and places minimal burden to the clients.

Abstract

As a country with the largest Moslem population, the workplace in Indonesia generally provides a place and time for the workers to perform their religious obligation, mainly for performing Sholat. The purpose of this literatures study was to probe several aspect of Islamic teaching and ritual from the scientific perspective which is  then able to be optimized its benefit for the work, in addition for religious intention, mainly in the management of occupational stress. Stress itself arises in the interaction between people and their environment, and coping strategy will determine how well they manage the stress. In summary, the result show that the types of stress according to the theory of Lasarus can be harmonized with the coping strategy based on Islamic teachings in Al Quran, especially in the Surah Al-Inshirah verses 1 through 8. Another important finding was that Sholat activity provides two physiological benefits, i.e. stimulates the relaxation of brainwaves and increase the muscle flexibility. Whereas, the suggestion to perform Sholat berjamaah or praying in group is in harmony with the collective culture of Indonesia, especially related to the value of silaturahmi or friendship and hospitality. Therefore, performing Sholat berjamaah during work is also able to strengthen the relationship between employees which might be utilized to express their emotion or even psychological burden. However, study in this  area still need to be improved to find other alignments that can optimize the role and benefits of religious activity in the workplace.

Abstract

The impacts of maternal mental health to the unborn child has not been researched as vastly as the impacts of physical health. One of the parameter of mental health during pregnancy is pregnancy specific distress (PSD). PSD can directly and indirectly affect the physical and mental aspects of a child, both during the pregnancy and after birth. There are several PSD risk factors relevant in Indonesia, namely young maternal age, economic pressure during pregnancy, and unwanted pregnancies. NuPDQ is a measure of PSD which have been translated to Indonesian language. The validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of NuPDQ is investigated here as part of its adaptational process. The results shown that 5 of 17 items have low (< 0.3) corrected item-total correlation with the total score, with two items having negative correlation coefficients. However, as a whole the NuPDQ still possessed an acceptable reliability (0.736). Considering the adequate reliability, the necessity to include various possible stressors in the instrument, and the small number of items, we suggest that the items with low corrected item-total correlations may still be included in relevant contexts. Further research with more heterogenous sample is necessary, especially in populations with high vulnerability to PSD. Further research is also needed to find the factor structure of the NuPDQ in Indonesia.
