Abstract

In general there are two schools of thought on whether a Muslim woman can become apolitical leader. One school forbids it, while the other allows it. This study will argue that thecontroversy surrounding women’s political leadership that exists in the Islamic discourse isnot merely a matter of isntinbāţ (deductive inquiry) regarding the meaning of Qur’anic verseand tradition (al-nuşūş) and the difference in dalīl (reference) that is used in interpretation asstated by previous scholar, but also involves various other factors. These factors includepersonal background, ideology and audience. The data has been obtained from studying theQur’anic verse (al-Nisā` /4:34) referred to by those who prohibit female leadership. Theprimary reference is Tafsir al-Mishbah by Quraish Shihab. The data are approached by using adiscourse analysis. The standpoints expressed by this author did not happen in a vacuum, butwere influenced by the author’s perception and the ideology of the interpreter of his work. Thus the significance of this study is to show that Qur’anic verses especially those allied to therole of women, can be construed in various ways that are in accordance with a particularscholar’s propensities.

Abstract

1n his book, The Question of Cultural Identity, Stuart Hall states that the inventions inthis modern era has brought a new development and transformed the concept of individualism. It deals with the concept of an individual as a subject and how the identity of an individualworks. In this modern era, there is a transformation among individuals by which they try tofree themselves from the traditions and social cultures that have restricted them. In fact, theconcept of individualism does not merely occur in this modern era but it had also occurred inpre-modern era. However, this term differs in its life, experience, and concepts. One of the characteristics of modernity which is supposed to change the existing socialstructure, according to Hall, is the invention and the development of machines and theinvention of internet which leads to virtual culture. One example is that the presence offacebook account of Everybody Draw Mohammed Day has resulted in a protest from Muslimsfrom all over the world. As a result, this protest has led to the presence of competitor sitesimilar to facebook. This fact shows that the expression of Muslim identity in virtual world orinternet plays an important role on the formation of self identity, which Michel Foucault calledthe formation of Muslim identity discourse.

On the basis of its function, media has a chance to build a direct communication with the society so that it has a strategicposition that may give benefits not only to the social aspect, but also to economic and politicalaspects. One way to develop communication with the public is through soap opera program. This TV program is chosen since it can highly attract public interest.
