Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research deals with factors slow secondary learners difficulties in learning speaking at Homeschooling Global Lentera Kasih Batam. This research was conducted by using qualitative research. The objectives of this study was to investigate the factors causing slow secondary learners difficulties in learning speaking English. The data of this study obtained from documentation and interview. The techniques of collecting data that was applied in this research- they are observation, interview and documentation. The data of this study obtained from the result of interview from teacher and parents of slow learners. The source of data in this study was slow secondary learners grade X and the English teacher. There were 2 English teachers, and 2 classes of secondary level learners in Homeschooling Global Lentera Kasih and both slow learners classes contains 4 students, in class X-1 they are FL, NM, RRH and PLG, while in class X-2, they are DA, KT, SRN and FDF. The results showed that there were two factors caused the difficulties of slow learners in learning speaking, they are emotional and personal factors. Keywords: Factors, Slow Learners, Difficuties , Learning, Homeschooling

Abstract

ABSTRACT This Research and Development (R&D) is conducted to develop English teaching materials for young learners of grade four based on Islamic values of integrated language skills at SD IT AL Hijrah 2 Deli Serdang. The objectives of this study are 1) to analyze English teaching materials are needed by the students, 2) to develop the English teaching materials, and 3) to give reasons for the English teaching materials developed. The respondent of this study is 23 respondents which consisted of twenty (20) fourth-grade students, one (1) English teacher, and two (2) lecturers. The data is collected by questionnaire, interview, and documentary. The results of this study showed that 1) English teaching materials needed by the students are English teaching materials based on Islamic values of integrated language skills, 2) the development of English teaching materials were developed through four steps, namely evaluation and need analysis, material development, material validation, and revision and final product, and 3) the reason English teaching materials are developed based on Islamic values of integrated language skills is because of the Islamic elementary schools and the terms or level of young learners. Based on the expert’s judgment result, the score was 3.68, and the percentage is 90% categorized as very good. It means that the developed materials were relevant or appropriate for the fourth-grade students of Islamic elementary school. It implies that the teacher can use the developed English teaching materials based on Islamic values of integrated language skills and Islamic elementary needs to lead the students to learn English in the Islamic context. Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Teaching Materials for Young Learners, Islamic Values of Integrated Language Skills, Islamic Elementary School

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research paper concerned with the analysis of factor affecting ideological shift of text in the translation of literary work. As the data source, a novel entitled 'half of yellow sun' a work of Chimamanda Adichie was analyzed. The analysis was specified to clauses taken from the English and Indonesian version of the novel, as the data. Further, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative approach in collecting and analyzing the data. Halliday’s theory of metafunction, specified on the analysis of transitivity system was used as main theory. Moreover, the theory of ideology in translation was adopted in the analysis, as causal factor to see how translation ideology cause the ideological shift of text in translation. Then, the result of the analysis revealed that the intermetafunctional shift is the most significant category found in the text (90.24%), while the intra-metafunctional shift was only found once (9.75%).   It proved that there were significant change of ideology of text showed by the changing of the process of transitivity system. Morever, the result of analysis releaved that, the ideological shifts of text were mostly affected by domestication ideology with percentages 78.05%, and foreignization ideology by percentages 21.95% or equal to a quarter of the whole clauses. It means that the translator produced the translation based on her goal and point of view and ideology of target language's culture and trying to make the text as closely as possible to the target readers’ language. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study  is to explain the reason of using the Impoliteness Strategy realized by  7- Year- Old Children. Research design This research is descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis To obtain the data 10 children were observed In doing the analysis.  Miles, Huberman and Saldana 2014 steps theories were used. To achieve the objective the steps used were data condensation,  data display, and data verification. Result. The result shows that the reason of using the impoliteness strategy were mocking (30%), to get / to show power over action or conversation (30%), to vent negative feeling (28%), to show disagreement (12%), while to entertain the target audience wasn't found (0%).Keywords: Reason,  Impoliteness, Mocking, Entertain

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn communication, people often faced to the use of metaphor, but many of us sometimes don't understand the metaphor itself. People usually find metaphors when using language in communication where the language they want to say is different from the actual meaning. metaphor divided into two; lexical metaphor and grammatical metaphor and lexical metaphor. This research focus on lexical metaphor that shows variations of words in which there are veiled meanings or different meanings. This research aims to explain why lexical metaphors are used in the Surah Al-Kahfi. This research revealed that (+) specialized, un-equal, formal and written have some frequency. All of them were found 42 times or 100%. Meanwhile, the (-) specialized, equal, informal and spoken with zero experience. the researcher was interested to conduct a research about lexical metaphor that used in Surah Al-Kahfi with Bahasa Indonesia translation version of the Qur’an. Keywords: Metaphor, Lexical Metaphor, Al-Qur’an, Surah Al-Kahfi

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study is to investigate the culture and interlanguage stages effect on EFL students’ politeness in refusals. This study was a qualitative research. The data were taken from refusal expressions made by EFL Malay and Batak Junior high school students with initial stage (stage 1 interlanguage) and free variation stage (stage 2 interlanguage). The data of this study were collected by using elicitation techniques by using Discourse Completion Task (DCT), pictures and Interview. The number of the subjects involved in this study was taken by using snowball technique and the total number were twelve subjects. The results of this study showed that both culture and interlanguage stages affect the EFL students’ politeness in refusals. In Bataknese EFL students, the realization of politeness in refusal tends to be more affected by the culture rather than the interlanguage stages. While in Malay, culture and interlanguage stages have the same effect in the realization of politeness in refusals.Keywords: Culture, Effect, Interlanguage Stages,  Politeness, Refusals

Abstract

ABSTRACTLearning strategies is related with specific action taken by english learner and students to make learning process is easier, faster, more enjoyable to new situation. Learning strategies in the beginning used in the military system, but now then also used in education.The aim of this research is to describe similarities and differences with reference to the realizations of learning strategies used in the English online lerning to inclusive students at SMA Negri II Lubuk pakam. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this research are sentences containing realization of learning strategies in English online class to inclusive students. The sources of data are taken from 10 inclusive students and 2 English teachers at SMA Negri II Lubuk Pakam grade XI and XII. The inclusive students and English teachers are assumed to represent all inclusive learning both locally and provincially. Each of the learning strategies is represented by ten inclusive students for inclusive students two english teachers for all english teachers in inclusive classes. The data are analyzed by using interactive model in which sentences are analyzed with reference Heaver (2009) theory  adaptation of inclusive learning strategies. The findings indicate that there are similarities and diffrences with reference to the realizations of learning strategies in the English online learning to inclusive students. Keywords: Learning Strategies, English Learning, Online, Inclusive Students

Abstract

ABSTRACTLanguage variation is the study of those features of language that differ systematically as compare different groups of speaker or the same speaker in different situation. As a multicultural country, Indonesia has so much variety of language. In addition to the official language, Indonesian people also have regional languages in each region. Rokan Hilir is one of them. Rokan Hilir, where the majority of the population is Malay, has a special regional language, namely the Malay language. This descriptive qualitative study identifies the variation of Riau Malay language in Rokan Hilir Regency review by analyze realizations of variation Riau Malay language in Rokan Hilir Regency. To understand the Realization of variation Riau Malay language in Rokan Hilir observation and interview were used in this study. The result indicates that realization of language variation were found there, phonology that is found as the most kinds of realization of  language variation for about 21 times appearing or (53.8 %). Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study deals with Address System in one ethnic namely Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. The objective of this study is to describe the functions of address system Gayonese Lut and Deret in Bener Meriah. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting data were through giving the questionnaire sheets to the twelve subjects and record the conversation of interview with subjects and also the informants by taking the video directly. The result of this study found that Gayonese Lut has five functions address system namely Attract people attention (5.71), Show intimacy (28.58), Show politeness (7.14), Show power differential (20.00), and Reflect identity (38.57).  Gayonese Deret also has five functions of address system namely Attract people attention (10.00), Show intimacy (20.00), Show politeness (32.00), Show power differential (14.00), and Reflect identity (24.00). In Gayonese Lut, Reflect identity is the most function of address system while in Gayonese Deret is Show politeness. Keywords: Address System, Gayonese, Lut, Deret.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to explain whether : (1) the students’ achievement in listening comprehension taught by using video was significantly higher than that taught by audio (2) the students’ achievement taught to high motivation significantly was higher than that to students’ low motivation? (3) therewas any significant interaction among teaching media (video and audio) and motivation in listening comprehension achievement. The research design is experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. There were 72 students from MAS YMPI Kota Tanjungbalai as sample of this research. The students were divided into two groups. The first group was treated by using Audio and the second group was treated by using Video. Students’ achievement in listening comprehension was measured by using multiple choice tests. The data were analyzed by applying Two-Ways ANOVA. The result revealed that (1) students’ listening comprehension achievement taught by using video wassignificantly higher than that taught by using audio with Fobservedwas higher than that Ftable at level significance α = 0.05 (Fobserved = 155.7>Ftable = 3.98). (2) There was significant difference of students achievement in listening comprehension with high motivation was taught by using video was higher than that low motivation by using audio with Fobserved is higher than Ftable at the level significance α = 0.05 (Fobserved = 93.4>Ftable = 3.98). (3) There was significance interaction among media (audio and video) and students’ motivation on students’ achievement in listening comprehension with Fobservedwas lower than Ftable at level significance α = 0.05 (Fobserved = 1.2 <Ftable = 3.98). Thus, media (audio and video) and students’ motivation significantly affect the students’ achievement in listening comprehension. Keywords: Audio, Video, Motivation, Listening Comprehension
