Abstract

This study aims at analyzing students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition based on the generic structure. The research design was descriptive methods. The researcher chose eleventh grade students in SMA Negeri 5 Malang especially in cross interest class (kelas Lintas Minat) which consists 29 students as the subject of the research. The data was collected by students’ assignment in writing hortatory exposition. The findings of this research stated that the ability of  eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Malang  in writing hortatory exposition based on the generic structure were in “Good” category with the mean 72. There are 6 students were in “Very Good” category, 16 students were in “Good” category, 4 students in “Fair” category, and 3 students were in “Poor” category which wrote the hortatory exposition based on the generic structure. The researcher concludes that the students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition text based on the generic structure categorized as good with the mean was 72. Based on research findings, it is addressed to the students to learn more the generic structures of hortatory exposition and the teacher must investigate approaches or methods for teaching hortatory exposition text so that students can understand the topic. It is also needed to further exploration and investigation about analysis students’ ability in writing hortatory exposition in other future research.

Abstract

This study investigates wether there is any significant difference between the students who taught using Socrative and those who are not taught using Socrative in Junior High School Al Hidayah. Fourthy one students from ninth grade of Junior High School Al Hidayah were involved in this study. These students were required to do pre-test, treatment, and post-test using Socrative. The researcher applied quasi experiment research which the pre-test was given firstly to determine them into the control and experimental group. The finding of this study shows that there is difference in students’ reading comprehension between the experimental group and control group. The mean score from both groups in reading comprehension, the experimental group, M=77,05, and the control group, M=69,23. The mean difference between both two groups is 7,82. The experimental group records higher than the control group; this implies that the English teachers can take advantages from using Socrative in learning reading comprehension. Also, the English teachers should use a variety of strategies and methods so that students are not bored during the teaching and learning process. It is expected that this research can be beneficial for future researcher as a reference to conduct in depth study, especially for the same topic as the present study.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the students’ perception towards teachingonline reading comprehension which included students’ obstacles, class activities, and students’ perception towards their reading comprehension during online class. The subjects were four students of English Department of University of Islam Malang who experienced online reading class in 4th semester which had chosen through purposive sampling. Then, to obtain the data, the researcher conducted in-depth-interviews.            The researcher found four main points of student perceptions. First, lecturer managed the class by utilizing WhatsApp feature, Zoom Meeting and Google Classroom apps. For the activity, students read and summarized some reading sources to be collected to the lecturer. Second, students faced the obstacles, such as how to use the technology and how to manage their time. Then, all of participants said that the lecturer way to manage and give the class activity was effective, they felt the improvement on their reading because of the activity. The last, students gave their perception about things that must be implemented in online reading class for getting better reading comprehension.Based on the findings, this study was conducted in limited scope and has a number of limitations. It will be better to add another instrument and get the lecturer’s point of view in the next study. The suggestions were addressed to lecturer to be more sensitive about the students need while doing class activities, such as additional information and feedback. The lecturer needs to add interactive and interesting activities to enhance students' motivation in online reading class.

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims at knowing what types, what the frequencies, and what are the causes of grammatical errors in writing abstract made by the English language education students at university of Islam Malang. The research design in this study is qualitative research design in the form of descriptive design. The subject of this study is the abstracts of skirpsi made by the English language education students 2017/2018 academic year, and it consists of 30 writing abstracts. There are some types of grammatical errors made by the English language education students at university of Islam Malang, those are omission of article, 35 items (20.23%) of substitution singular to plural, 16 items (9.24%) of disagreement of subject and tenses, 4 item (2.31%) of substitution singular to plural, 1 item (0.67%) of omission of to be, and 1 item (0.57%) of omission of main verb. The causes of the grammatical made by students were interlingual transfer, limited knowledge of English grammar, and carelessness. Key words: Grammatical Errors, Abstracts, Skripsi

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the relationship between grammar mastery, and reading comprehension ability. The sample consisted of 29 EFL students in the third semester of English Department at the University of Islam Malang and the instrument were scores of grammar mastery and reading comprehension ability. The collected data were analyzed by Pearson Product Moment Correlation by applying IBM SPSS 20.0. The research findings showed a significant positive correlation between grammar mastery and reading comprehension ability because the significance demonstrated on the table was 0.000<0.05 level of significance. Then, the coefficient correlation obtained shown on the table was 0.631. It was indicated that grammar mastery was significantly correlated with reading comprehension ability. Therefore, it was concluded that the students’ grammar mastery contributed significantly to their reading comprehension ability. Based on the finding, it can be suggested that students should involve grammar when reading to get the message conveyed by the author. Besides that, the role of the lecturer is also essential to motivate students so that they can improve their grammar background knowledge.

Abstract

Abstract: Many academic institutions has implemented online learning to ensure the spread of Covid-19 pandemic caused by learning activities. However, not all learning strategies in face to face learning is compatible to be used in online learning. In this case, it is necessary to utilize suitable learning methods and strategies that suitable for online learning. Listening skills is considered as difficult skill to learn in online learning, thus, the researcher aims to study students’ perception towards online listening and learning strategies used in online listening class. This study applied qualitative research method with Likert scale questionnaire as instrument. The study involves 72 participants from third semester students of English department at University of Islam Malang. The data was collected online via of google form and analyzed using Microsoft Excel to measure the perception percentage and listening strategies utilized by students in online listening class. The result shows that most of the students disagreed with many aspects of online listening such as material, assignment, time management, facility, and learning media online listening class. The participants disagreed with all aspects except for learning media and platforms. In terms of to learning strategies, there are more students who are using cognitive than metacognitive strategies. However, the mean score indicates that the students utilize more meta-cognitive strategies than cognitive strategies.
