Abstract

Abstract: Within the final month of 2019, the world got negative wave named as covid19. It haschanged numerous things within the world. It is begun from human versatility, commerce, industry and etc. This phenomenon does not as it were alter whole of human social interaction, but moreover grant enormous changing of educational setting. After covid-19 cases raising up, the learning method became online course or distance learning method. The distance learning method which is still relatively new certainly has its own impact on the process. Because of that, the researcher conducted this study to find issues or learning challenges conjointly the procedures in composing 4 class during distance learning within the covid19 widespread period. The centering focuses investigated in this inquire about are the challenges or troubles that the understudies confront in composing 4 course, how the preferences of separate learning and the application of ICT in learning in terms of giving comfort or diminishing issues confronted by composing 4 course understudies. This research utilized qualitative strategy by portraying each result. The survey is the primary portion of this investigate. There are 28 questions within the frame of articulations given at the side the Likert scale as a way of replying. Afterward on, there was a meet session comprising of 11 questions. The 11 questions were tended to 4 members who were chosen from 50 members who had already gotten a survey before. The study found that the members did not have any critical issues with their composing handle. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of the study to know how student perceptions of the online thesis supervision process for students majoring in English Education at the University of Islam Malang. To achieve the above objectives, researchers conducted a type of qualitative descriptive research. Data collection procedures were carried out using questionnaires and interviews. To obtain student perception questionnaire data, the questionnaire was given to all students online using Google Forms. After the participants filled out all the questionnaires, the researcher interviewed four selected students with two interviews and the duration of the interview was 30 minutes with the aim of exploring their perceptions of online thesis supervision. In the data analysis section, the researcher analyzed the data results using quantitative and qualitative techniques. For quantitative data, the researcher used a student perception questionnaire from Mushoriwa (2014). Student perceptions consist of two types of expressions, namely positive and negative. Periodic handling of qualitative data is carried out based on the comprehensive analysis method by Miles and Huberman (1994). It contains three parallel streams: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In this study, students' perceptions of online thesis guidance said that students' perceptions were more dominant towards positive perceptions such as supervisors providing useful input and helping students in advancing their thesis so that they were able to complete it faster and be more focused when compiling a thesis. Things that need to be considered as suggestions are how in the future to add samples in data collection such as adding lecturers as participants so that it is clearer from student perceptions and lecturers' perceptions.Key words: EFL Students’, Online Thesis Supervision, Perceptions, Undergraduate

Abstract

Abstract: This study done to know the successful and less successful students perceive a good model of speaking lecturer in English department of Universitas Islam Malang, and the similarities between successful and less successful student’s perception of a good speaking lecturers. This study classified to descriptive quantitative research. The finding of the study showed classroom atmosphere as Speaking lecturer who is relaxed but obvious get very strong belief in SS with score 80% and 73% in LS it become the highest score of all categories. In the lowest score successful and less successful students have the same believe that they do not please to the lecturer who often come late. with each score; SS=38%, LS=39%. It becomes the lowest level in all items. In conclusion, the problems most discussed are about the qualified interaction between lecturers and students, as well as clarity about the strategy for delivering material and the comfort atmosphere in the classroom that agreed between the two parties. Then also the personal discipline of the lecturer as the educator towards the process of improving speaking skills.Key words: Good speaking lecturer, Successful students, Less successful students.

Skripsi, English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Islam Malang.Advisor : (I) Dr. Alfan Zuhairi,M.Pd (II) Febti Ismiatun, S.Pd,M.Pd Key words: English Drama Strategy, Group Presentation, SpeakingDrama is experimential learning that engaged mind, body, voice, and emotions to interpret and convey to others information and ideas. Drama technique can improve students’ communicative skills. It will engage the students to be more active.This study investigated the effectiveness of using English drama to enhance students’ speaking skill in tenth grade students at NU PAKIS Senior High School Malang. The participants of this study consist of 60 students. This study used quasi experimental research design. The researcher used a speaking test as the instrument to collect the data. There are pre test and post test.  The data was analyzed using Mann Whitney test to find out any significant differences between experimental and control group in terms of speaking performance. The result of Mann Whitney test found that the sig. value was lower than 0.05, that is 0.003 (0.003 < 0.05), which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It can be concluded that English drama had significant effect in students speaking skill rather than using group presentation. Furthermore, the mean rank of experimental group was higher than control group (69.07 > 61.67) and the experimental students have better speaking than control group.Based on the result, the researcher concluded that English drama strategy gave significant contribution to enhance the students' speaking skill and the English drama strategy could be an effective method to teach speaking. The findings showed that there are some significant differences between students who are treated by English drama and students who are treated group presentation strategy on students’ speaking skill in ten grade Senior High School students at NU PAKIS Senior High School Malang.The application of drama into the language classroom practices is, yet, probably challenge, the nature of drama-based role plays need to be considered and presented by the English teachers in their instructional learning so as to allow students to take greater responsibility for their learning in dynamic, engaging, interactive and meaningful ways.

Abstract

This research presents the perceptions of eighth-grade students of SMP Islam Ma’arif 03 Malang on the use of YouTube for speaking activities.The research used a descriptive qualitative approach with a descriptive study as the research design. The subjects were 26 eighth-grade students of SMP Islam Ma’arif 03 Malang. To investigate students’ perceptions, the researcher used an online questionnaire and interview as the methods of collecting data. Then, the instruments used by the researcher were an online questionnaire and interview. The findings of this study showed that the perceptions of the students on the use of YouTube for speaking activities were positive. Most of them agreed that the use of YouTube videos can help them to comprehend faster and better in learning English speaking skills, use proper vocabulary, use correct grammatical forms, and reduce their anxiety so that they can speak English in class with their friends and teacher. In the future, researchers can use more subjects or different educational levels and can also use other questionnaires to get better results.STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON THE USE OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS FOR SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the linguistic factors of university students’ difficulties in translating sentences from English to Indonesia and vice versa. There are five linguistic factors investigated in this research, those are lexical, dictionary entries, syntactic, ellipsis, and idiom. Therefore, the research problem was consisted of which type of translation was more difficult and which linguistic factor was the most difficult for university students at the University of Islam Malang (UNISMA). Hence, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative design on students of the fifth semester at A class which consisted of 36 students. 10 students were chosen based on the lowest score in the translation subject and were administered to the translation test consisting of 9 numbers to translate from English to Indonesia and 6 numbers to translate from Indonesian to English. 5 students who got the lowest score on the test were interviewed to get deep information about their difficulties with those five linguistic factors. The result showed by the least percentage means the most difficult factor, it is indicated that the most difficult linguistic factors is related to idiom and followed by ellipsis with and dictionary entries with, then syntactic factors and lastly lexical problem. Moreover, this study also found that when translating sentence from Indonesian to English, the most difficult is dictionary entries, which followed by ellipsis and then syntactic as well as lexical. The result of the study suggested for the university students to learn more about the linguistic components, especially in translating sentences both from Indonesian to English and vice versa.Key Words: linguistic factors, sentence, and translation

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to find out students' opinions about the challenges they face in the online learning process during Covid-19, as well as to find out what strategies students use in overcoming the challenges they face. This research method uses descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were taken from 4 2nd semester students from the English Department of UNISMA. Researchers used online interviews to obtain the data needed in this study. The theory of data collection in this study uses the theory of Miles & Huberman (2013) where in theory there are 3 ways of collecting data, namely data reduction, data analysis, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that students face many challenges or difficulties in the online learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic such as limited internet, signal interference, difficulty understanding material, and boredom and laziness when studying online. In addition, the researchers also found strategies used by students in overcoming these challenges.Keywords: Challenges, Strategies, Online Learning

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to describe the EFL students’ listening difficulties and strategies in online learning. The researcher implemented a descriptive qualitative research method through semi-structured interviews. The data collection for this research is from five students of the English department at the University of Islam Malang through the use of voice note WhatsApp platform.The data were presented using figure and illustration. The result shows that the students have their unique way of dealing with online learning problems that they encounter. Each student also has different causing factors that influence difficulties in online listening. It is also found that not all strategies used by students are effective against the problems they encounter especially for the problems that are not under their direct authority. The researcher offer suggestion as follows: 1) For students, it is suggested to keep practicing and develop strategies in online listening that are suitable for personal needs. 2) For lecturers, it is suggested to maintain good communication in online learning with multi-directional communication to build a good online classroom environment. 3) For the other researcher, it is suggested to conduct deeper research about more specific listening strategies.Key words: online listening, difficulties, strategies.

Abstract

Abstract: This article is aimed at knowing the Effectivenessof E-Learning in Comprehending English Reading Text in MA Al-Karimiyyah. The     research design in this research is experimental research design. The subject of this research is the second class of senior high school n MA Al-Karmyyah. The instruments of this research are test administration and giving questionnaire. The result showed that there is no significant difference between control class and experimental class in using e-learning, but there is a difference between pre-test and post-test students score,  means that using e-learning at MA Al-Karimiyyah is not effective but shared reading method can increase students reading comprehension. It can be seen from the comparing the score of control class and try out class. From the data in the test which is using Independent sample T-test showed that the significant value 0.222 > 0.05, so the hypothesis is rejected. It also has the same result with the questionnaire which has the significant value 0.483 > 0.05.Key words: E-learning, offline learning, reading comprehension, google classroom

Abstract

This study aimed to provide teachers’ strategies in teaching reading comprehension conducted by the English teacher of tenth grade of Vocational High School 2 Malang. This study used a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher chose one of the senior English teachers of Vocational High School 2 Malang who had good quality in teaching English, especially reading comprehension. In addition, to obtain the data, the researcher used observation and interview as the main instruments, and some supportive instruments such as document. The finding of the study indicated that the observed teacher used some certain platforms to maximize the teaching reading comprehension. The observed teacher also divided the activities into three steps, namely in pre-reading activities, during-reading activities, and post-reading activities and implemented various activities to the students either using Mclass, Google Classroom, Live Worksheet, ISL Collective, Youtube, WhatsApp Mesengger, and Google Meet. The researcher found out that the observed teacher applied (QARs) Question Answer Relationship and meta-cognitive strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The teachers used these strategies to make students understand the reading text and guide students to more focus on the text. Besides, teacher could help students in developing the meaning contained in the reading text so that students more easily understand the content of the reading. Keywords: Teacher strategies; teaching reading
