Abstract

Abstract: Reading is important in any field and degree of education as the basic skill to obtain information. Developing reading as a habit allows the reader to become more intelligent as practicing reading improves analytical skill in comprehending text. In terms of EFL, reading also have potential to develop vocabulary. Reading is habitual activities that determined by individual characteristics such as gender. Therefore, the researcher aims to study reading habit and vocabulary mastery from male and female students. This research is conducted using quantitative correlational research to answer the research question. The participants in this study consist of 115 students, 31 male and 84 female students from the 3rd semester in English language department at the University of Islam Malang. The instrument used in this study is in the form of reading habit questionnaire and vocabulary mastery test. The data analyzed using independent sample t test using SPSS 24.0 to measure the significant difference between male and female students in reading habit and vocabulary mastery. The result indicated that there is no significant difference between male and female students in terms of reading habit and vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the score between male and female students are not significantly different. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is significant correlation between students vocabulary mastery and reading habit but there is no significant correlation between gender with vocabulary mastery and reading habit.Key Words: Reading habit, Gender, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find factors of writing achievement based on their learning styles. There are two problems to be solved: (1) What are the factors that cause students to have good writing achievement based on their learning styles (VAK) and (2) what are the factors cause students to have poor writing achievement based on their learning styles (VAK). The method in this study was qualitative study. The subjects of this study were twenty-five students in a second-grade language class at SMP Wahid Haysim. The researcher collected the data from the Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP) questionnaire from Reid (1984), the interview guide was conducted by using a semi-structural and the type of this interview was opened-ended. The data were analyzed by grouping the students based on their learning styles, explaining the data from the questionnaire and interview sheet, and drawing conclusions based on the research problems and results of the data analysis. The finding of this study shows that the auditory learning style becomes the most learning style preference by the students followed by visual and kinesthetic. Furthermore, the factors that cause students to have good writing achievements are: (1) students’ learning preferences, (2) students’ different learning styles, and (3) students’ internal, external, and Learning Approaches. The factors that cause students to have poor writing achievement are: (1) no skill in writing, uninterested, vocabulary mastery and no ability to write in English (2) Internal, External, and Learning Approaches. Keywords: factors of students' writing achievement, learning styles

Abstract

Abstract: Writing is one of the English skills that must be mastered by students. In this usage, the writer uses the scramble game technique as a learning method for students’ ability in word writing. In this case, the technique is used to make it easier for students to write words correctly.The research design in this study used a quantitative research design, a quasi-experimental design. Class VII consisted of 50 students and was divided into two groups, namely the experimental and control groups, where each group consisted of 25 students. The treatment given to the experimental group was using scramble games to write students’ words. The research gives a test instrument to students who must answer questions to measure students' achievement.To analyze the data, the research uses SPSS 20, namely the Independent T-test. The results showed that the average of the experimental group was (M= 77, 60) and the control group was (M= 66, 40). At the same time, the p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) was shown. After knowing the data results, it shows that there is a positive effect on the use of scramble game techniques in writing students’ words.Keywords: Scramble game, scramble word, writing ability

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out students perception on the use of TikTok  in improving students vocabulary mastery. For the research design, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher choose eight grade from one of junior high school in Malang. The procedure of this research involved one step, interview. The finding showed that Tiktok was considered very helpful by the participants because they used TikTok as a means to watch videos about vocabulary or educational videos. The participants said that they got some information or knowledge about vocabulary by watching videos on the Tikok. They also knew a lot about various content which consist of many random video including educational video. The participants said that by using Tiktok they could get some information or knowledge about vocabulary. The video are provide English vocabulary raise their motivation and their interest to know some new vocabulary. Keyword: Perception, Tiktok Videos, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: During this virtual learning conditions, media is very important to make learning activities in the classroom run optimally with the help of technological innovation such as Zoom Meeting Applications. However, in the pandemic era, learning and teaching must be continued online, in distance learning. This study aims to find out the teacher's strategy in teaching English and to know the factors that influence students' interest in studying English at class X in SMAN 9 Malang. This research used qualitative research and the subject of this research are from both X IPS 1 & X IPS 2 that were 5 students and 1 teacher of SMAN 9 Malang. In investigating students and teacher’s perspective, the researcher used interview as the instrument for collecting data. Furthermore, the questions are adapted from Nurhamidah (2012) and Rindiani (2021) which has been validated. The findings of this study showed the students’ perceptions toward teacher’s strategy were positive. Students said that teacher’s strategy which used discourse strategy by explaining the material at beginning of the study can ease students understanding and increase vocabularies. Unfortunately, most students’ perceptions toward using Zoom Meeting Application were negative which students and teacher got some troubles, such as bad internet connection and underestimating the learning.Keywords: Strategy, interest, zoom meeting application

Abstract

Abstract: Learning English is a fundamental lesson for every level. English has four skills: speaking, writing, reading, listening, and three components: grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Vocabulary is critical in every aspect, especially in learning English. Vocabulary is essential to learn in the process, so there were usually faced problems, especially by eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. Therefore, every student must master vocabulary to be able to communicate. The author of this study used an ex post facto research design. The hypothesis test in this study used the One Sample t-test in SPPS version 26. The formulation of the problem in this study was whether there was the effectiveness of using the Pictoword game learning method on the vocabulary mastery of students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The author used a sample of 40 students of eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. This research instrument used a posttest adapted from the learning syllabus of the revised 2013 curriculum. Based on the one sample t-test analysis, the results showed the t-count value (-10.809) < t-table (1.685), which means the alternative hypothesis was rejected. The author concluded that there was no effectiveness of using the Pictoword game method on the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim. This study investigates the effectiveness of using a Pictoword game on students' vocabulary mastery for eighth grade in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The results of the hypothesis test indicate that the use of the game learning method using the Pictoword game has not provided effectiveness in the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. Students are advised to use varied and creative supporting media as an exercise tool to improve vocabulary mastery.Keywords: Effectiveness, Ex Post Facto, Learning Method, Pictoword, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: English is one of subject that compulsory in senior high school. Learning English is not easy for students’ who did not like this subject. In Indonesia, English regarded as foreign language so students can not practice English everywhere. Students need the appropriate language learning strategy and thinking styles to make them more comprehend in English. The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between English language learning strategies and thinking styles intensity. The researcher design in this research was quantitative approach. The researcher took 30 participants from third grade students who take linguistic major in senior high schools. The questionnaire was used as instrument in this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS version 26. The finding of this research showed that the third grade students mostly applied social strategy (M = 7.27) in language learning strategy context and legislative style as thinking styles most used by students’ (M = 8.20). The Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated a statistically significant correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles at significant value .000. It indicates there is correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles intensity. In brief, language learning strategies and thinking styles encourage students to learn English more effectively.Keywords: Language learning strategies, thinking styles

Abstract

Abstract: Reading activity has the main purpose to find information by comprehending the message originated from a written source. As stated by Harmer (2008), reading is an active mental process intended to gain information and comprehend the message in the text. To read effectively, it is necessary for the reader to apply strategies that suit their reading needs. Another aspect that influences reading strategies is gender as gender differs personality of individuals that affects learning strategies (Anantasa, 2016). Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting a study about the difference between reading comprehension strategies used by males and females. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method and semi-structured interviews as the instrument. The data for this research were collected from 10 students with 5 male and 5 female students of the English department from the University of Islam Malang online with the use of WhatsApp voice notes. The data are analyzed using qualitative analysis that consists of data reduction, grouping, coding, and interpretation to get the data as a whole. In result shows that most of the participants in this study are active readers. with female students tend to be more frequent and consistent while male students tend to be more focused in reading. The study indicated that the reasons for using strategies depend on the characteristic of the text, preference, and reading purposes. The study also indicated many differences in terms of using reading strategies, male students are dominant at previewing, skimming, and predicting, while female students are dominant at text Identification, summarizing, attention to detail, and selecting a strategy. The study suggests the importance of conducting a study on digital reading settings as reading is gradually shifted to the digital setting.Key Words: Reading strategies, gender, reading comprehension.

The effectiveness between using story completion technique and role play on the eighth grade students speaking skills of smpi salafiyah singosari in the academic year of 2021/2022. Skripsi, English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Islam Malang. Advisor I: Dr.Dra.Hj.Mutmainnah ,M.pd.; Advisor II: Dr. Imam Wahyudi Karimuallah, S. S, M. Pd. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of story completion techniques in developing speaking skills and overcoming lack of confidence at the eighth grade students of SMPI SALAFIYAH SINGOSARI. The researcher optimized the experimental research designs that used pre-test and post-test with quantitative approaches. The researcher took all eighth students as population. The researcher used probability purposive sampling in determining the sample with 28 students from class 8 as experimental and control group. The independent variable is story completion technique and the dependent variable is students' speaking skills. The researcher compares pre-test and posttest results between two groups from inter-rater and used an independent SPSS t-test to analyze the data. The pre-test to posttest of experimental was 48.25 to 65.50, control group was 46.63 to 57.13, and the p-value was 0.033, p= < 0.05. As a result, the researcher concluded that there was significant effect of using story completion on students’ speaking skill.  Keywords: effective, story completion technique, studeny speaking skill.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to know students’ perception of using English songs and their vocabulary learning. The design of this research was a qualitative with a case study design. There were 25 students of eight semester of English education Department of University of Islam Malang as the subjects of this study. The data were collected by questionnaire and interview. To analyzed the data from questionnaires, the researcher used formula of percentage calculations based on Sugiyono (2015). Meanwhile, the data from the interview were analyzed by using the flow model by Miles and Huberman as cited in Sugiyono (2015) which consisted of data display, data reduction, and drawing a conclusion. The result of this study showed students’ perception of using English songs and their vocabulary learning were positive. The majority of the students had an interest in listening English songs. They always updating the latest English songs and spend their time to listening English songs. Almost all of the students also agreed that English songs can help them in a learn English skills and increasing their vocabulary. In addition, all participants said that pop songs gave the best results to increase vocabulary because pop songs have a slow tempo, making it easier for students to understand the meaning of the lyrics of the song. Based on the findings, it is suggested for further research to investigate students’ perceptions of using English songs and others English skills.Keywords: Students’ perception, English songs, vocabulary learning
