Abstract

Hamilton is a highly successful musical, both critically and commercially, which has been applauded for its revolutionary inclusivity: the musical famously casts people of color, despite its characters being based on historical, living people who were not of color, including the towering figures of America’s ‘founding fathers’. A group of critics, however—minor yet nonetheless vital voices—have denounced this as superficial diversity that perpetuates the erasure of people of color from history; as no main character is based on a historical person of color. While certain writers and reviewers have offered rebuttals, there is yet to be critical exposition that the character Hamilton himself, rather than a representation of the founding father, is instead a representation of what postcolonialists term ‘the other’; therefore making the work the opposite of an erasure of societally othered minority groups. As such, this paper examines, and later finds, that Hamilton’s Hamilton is indeed the epitome—and thus a prime representation, signaling undeniable presence—of the other in the text. Keywords: Musical Theater, American Literature, Postcolonialism, The Other, Immigrants.

Abstract

Shounen is one of the most popular genres of anime. Although Shounen is usually targeted at younger boys, it is often consumed by audiences of all ages, such as Naruto and its sequel, Naruto Shippuden. In this study, I will focus on identifying the masculinity within the male ninjas in the series and analyzing the motivations behind the exercise of masculinity to find the ideal masculinity. I will combine the masculinity theory with the Japanese’s manhood, to analyze the ideal masculinity in the text. Through my analysis, I find that the male ninjas of these anime series show different kinds of masculinity, which divides them into two roles, protagonist and antagonist. The protagonists are the ones who thrive to fight for others while the antagonists fight only to benefit themselves. As a result, the protagonists are able to possess the ideal masculinity as they can exercise their masculinity positively. Keywords: anime, masculinity, male ninjas, protagonist, antagonist.

Abstract

Given the argument that an autobiography can be deconstructed like any other fictional texts, this article analyzes Mein Kampf (1939), an autobiography written by Adolf Hitler by treating the text as a fiction. Doing so reveals Adolf Hitler the character, who is very influenced by Adolf Hitler the writer. With the use of Otto F. Kernberg’s (2004) theory on pathological narcissistic personality disorder, this article attempts to find Adolf Hitler the character’s narcissistic personality disorder inside of Mein Kampf and the reasons for such personality disorder. The investigation reveals that the symptoms of the character’s narcissism can be found in the character’s self, emotional life, and social functioning which fit into Kernberg’s (2004) description of a narcissistic patient. On the other hand, the character’s authoritarian parental figure and innate talents are the reasons for the personality disorder. Keywords: autobiography; narcissism; adolf hitler; mein kampf

Abstract

This creative work follows the journey of the daughter of a prostitute, in her attempt to survive after being kicked out of the house and find the biological mother whom she never met. It explores the theme of patriarchal culture that impacts prostitution industry and the complication of it.This realistic fiction novel was set in three countries which are China (Hong-Kong), Singapore, and Indonesia. The story highlights the reasons women enter prostitution explored in Barry’s The Prostitution of Sexuality theory, and the physical and pyscho-social impacts of slut-shaming happened to women prostitute explored in Benoit et al’s Theory of Social Stigma among Prostitutes. It will also be elaborated on how patriarchy impacts both issues. Through these theories and project, I find that patriachy causes many women decided to enter prostitution as it’s the best choice they have at hand even though the work itself oftentime harms them physically and pyscho-socially through the whore-stigma that operates on the micro, meso, and macro level of their lives. Keywords: patriarchal culture, women prostitution, whore-stigma, slut-shaming.
