Abstract

Improving students’ vocabulary mastery using Crossword Puzzle Game was the aim of this research. This research was designed by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was done in two cycles. The subject of this research was the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1. The instruments of collecting the data were observation paper and test. The result of data analysis showed that the result of the researcher’s observation paper in the cycle I for the first meeting was 73.68% while in the second meeting was 85.71%. In the cycle II for the first meeting was 88.23% and the second meeting was 100%. The result of students’ observation paper on the cycle I for the first meeting was 65.93% and the second meeting was 71.43%. In the cycle II for the first meeting was 87.91% and the second meeting was 98.02%. Furthermore, the average score of the students’ test result in cycle I was 40.95 while the average score of students’ test result in cycle II was 75. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the implementation of Crossword Puzzle Game is useful to teach vocabulary since it offered a good exercise to help the students to understand and learn different levels of meaning for the same words. In addition, it is suggested to the English teacher to apply Crossword Puzzle Game in teaching English vocabulary and for another researcher as a reference in doing research.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and meanings of idiomatic expressions. This study was designed in a qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data of this research are short stories. The procedures used in analyzing the data are classifying, selecting. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are six types of idiomatic expressions, there are similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliches and fixed statements, the last is other languages. Also the readers to use this research as a guide in conducting relevant research to sharpen and enlarge their literal development by trying to understand the overall context of the short story.

Abstract

The research was designed in classroom action research (CAR). Observation paper of the researchers’ activities and students’ activities, and test were used as the instrument to collect the data needed. The research did action research in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The result of this action research was that the percentage of researchers done activities in meeting I of cycle I was 73 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle I was 83 %. Next, the percentage of students’ done activities in meeting I of cycle I was 69.9 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle I was 87.2 %. The average of students’ score in cycle I was 67.3. Furthemore, the percentage of researchers done activites in meeting I of cycle II was 93 %, meanwhile in meeting II in cycle II was 100 %. Next, the percentage of the students’ done activities in meeting I of cycle II 93.6 %, meanwhile in meeting II of cycle II was 94.8 %. The average students’ score in cycle II was 88.1. It was concluded that there was improvement of students’ vocabulary through Mnemonic method.

Abstract

This research is aimed at improving students’ ability in mastering vocabulary through the implementation of Picture and Picture Strategy. This research took the seventh grade students of SMP Swasta Hoya Sejahtera as the subject of the research which consisted of 26 students. This research was designed using CAR method that involved planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two cycles done. The teaching material chosen were ‘describing parts of human body’ and ‘describing peoples’ activities for everyday’. Instruments of data collection were observation papers as qualitative data and the test as quantitative data. Qualitative data wasanalysed bySudjono (2014:82-83). Data analysis result shows that students’ ability in mastery vocabulary was significantly improved by implementation of Picture and Picture Strategy.Based on the observation papers, result it shows that activities done were increased each meeting. In addition, the test result in cycle I shows that there were 53.76 students who passed MCC by average score was 61.53. This achievement was significantly improved in cycle II to 92.16% who passed MCC by average score was 82. Total improvement from before conducting research to cycle II was 61.44%. It is concluded that this research was successfully implemented and Picture and Picture strategy is effective to improve students’ ability in mastering vocabulary. It is recommended that this teaching strategy to be implemented to another related skills.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the students’ anxiety in speaking English. This research was designed in qualitative research with descriptive approach. The data of this research was gathered through observation, and interview. The procedures used during analyzing the data were reading/memoing, describing, classifying. The result of this research showed that the anxiety experienced by eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Dharma Caraka Telukdalam were communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. The students’ anxieties were caused by four internal factors and five external factor. The internal factors were lack of confidence, shyness, lacks of motivation and fear of making mistake. The external factors were lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, grammatical error, friends/ classmate and embarrassment. Therefore, it can be concluded that anxiety and factors caused it influenced students’ ability in speaking English. It is suggested to English teacher to apply interesting methods to teach English speaking skill for students to avoid students’ anxiety in speaking English, and the teacher should create comfortable speaking class situation so that students can follow the speaking learning process.

Abstract

Denotative meaning is the original meaning or a true meaning possessed by a lexeme. Connotation is related to value of the sense of people who use language, whether they fell happy, sad, repugnant and angry. The purposes of this research were to identify the types of connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyrics and describe the meaning of denotative and connotative meaning in Kid laroi song lyric. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive method. The data was obtained from song lyrics of Kid laroy song lyrics. The data was collected by downloading Kid laroy selected songs, listening all of Kid laroy songs, finding the words, phrases or sentences which consists of denotative and connotative meanings, then analyzing the words, phrases and sentences which found out. The data was analyzed based on Miles et al theory. From the result, researcher found three types, they are (1) Positive Connotative 8 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song (2) negative connotative 14 data in ten lyrics of kid laroy song. (3) Neutral connotative 1 data in ten lyrics of kid laroi song. Based on the result, it is concluded that, the researcher got are 23 connotative meaning, and 15 dennotative meaning there could be found is Kid Laroi album. Based on the conclusion, the researcher would give contribution for the college students especially at English department, than, lyrics of Kid laroi can be used as a material college students to broaden and develop their knowladge about denotative and connotative meaning and both of the types connotative meaning in the song lyrics. And also for the readers or the next researcher, the researcher suggested that, this research can be used as a conception and reference in conducting research related to denotative and connotative meaning.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding and describing types of questioning strategies used by English teacher. This research was designed by using qualitative descriptive method. The instruments of data collection were observation and interview. After analyzing the data, researcher found that the questioning strategies were used by English teacher during classroom interaction. The questioning strategies used were: (1) procedural question, (2) convergent question, (3) divergent question. Furthermore, the purposes English teacher used questioning strategies were: (1) to make sure that the students were in good health and the students’ readiness before starting the lesson, (2) to attract students’ concentration, (3) as effort to achieve the learning objectives, (4) as the stimulus to think critically (5) as the effort to provide opportunities to express the ideas. Therefore, researcher concluded that questioning strategies used by English teacher was to know how far students understood about the material and to make sure whether the learning objectives have been achieved or not. Furthermore, the researcher suggests that English teacher could use questioning strategies to elicit students’ response during teaching and learning process.
