International Journal on Livable Space is focused on the three main aspects of livable space: community life, environment and technology. It is interested at inhabitation process, spatial structures (of houses, housings, neighborhoods, settlements, cities/urban, and territories), with its essential factors (social, cultural, economic, politics, and ideology), including reviews of phenomena in the context of philosophy. It is also interested at spatial context in relation to the aspects of safety, climatic change, social-cultural connectivity, quality of architecture, public facilities, spatial tolerance, environmental issues, ecological access, and the concepts and praxis of community based development.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTraditional architecture was built on a tradition inherited from one generation to the next. As a country which has hundreds of tribes, Indonesia has hundreds of traditional architecture designed by the ancestors to fulfill the function as well as responding to natural context. The aim of this research is to find out how the structural and building system traditional architecture in this country respond its natural conditions as the context. The method used is qualitative descriptive with the analysis of some traditional architecture which have been visited and conducted a theory review. The results showed that the traditional architecture in Indonesia had been designed to respond to nature as context. From the discussion, it can be concluded that traditional architecture in each region has an approach in aligning themselves with nature as context.Keywords: Local wisdom, traditional architecture, earthquake, climate, context.

Abstract

Omah dudur was discovered as a typical house in Urut Sewu, Purworejo-Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia.  By this research, it was found that  Omah Dudur is considered as a manifestation of universe of human, god and nature as well as a pusaka (heirlooms).  It is believed that interrelation among the three universes will influence to the successes and failures of occupants life. As a pusaka (heirlooms) which has the power and strength of wahyu, the omah dudur spiritually should be offered by certain ritual in the regular sacred time. Methodologically, this research implies Husserl’s paradigm phenomenology (1965) with the naturalistic framework of Egon G Lincoln and Guba (1985). Result of the study should be contributed to the knowledge of local concepts of typology of traditional and vernacular Javanese architecture. Keywords: omah dudur, wahyu, contextual transcendent, pusaka.

Abstract

One of the indicators that reflects the city's development is the rapid growth of high-rise buildings. The high price and limited available land coupled with the growth and increasingly diverse of human needs become the trigger. This is affected by advances in technology, various available materials as well as sufficient economics factor, making high-rise buildings as one of the development options in major cities around the world. Several factors such as, technology, modernity, and economics dominate the image high-rise buildings. Is it possible to construct the unique high-rise buildings in order to be different from each other? The paper is an initial step in examining the unique concepts that can be applied on high-rise buildings as the products of technology and modernity. The study was conducted through the review of literature in terms of time development in order to seek the unique aspects to be applied on high-rise buildings.  Keywords: high-rise  building, uniqueness, technology, modernity, locality

Abstract

Today, minimalist building style is considered appropriate to the reasons of: the high price of land and materials. Moreover, vernacular style inspires designers to categorisize it as a simple architectural type that is responsive to the context of micro climate. Both are modest style as undecorated building. This study aimed to communicate research result on the influence of micro climate aspects to both mentioned architectural types. Descriptive-analitic approach applied in this article is to identify the differencies between the features of minimalist landed houses (Harmonia and Bellarosa Clusters) and vernacular stilt house (Kampung Naga) components which are influenced by micro climate aspects. The result of study is that the decreasing and increasing of indoor temperature are determined by wall type and material; ventilation system; roof, eave and bottom structure types; geographical position; openings dimension.Keywords: micro climate, minimalist, vernacular architecture.

Abstract

Palembang’s Chinese community began inhabiting Kampung Kapitan 7 Ulu following the issuance of a mandate by Sultan Abdurrahman, granting the Chinese the privilege to inhabit the dry lands by the Musi River. Following the migration to the dry lands, the Chinese community implemented different forms of adaptation to the natural and socio-cultural environment to survive on the Musi Riverside, including in the form of residential architectures. This research is a case study, aiming to explore, examine and discuss the process of environmental adaptation and the different aspects that affect the residential architectures on the Musi Riverside. Analysis is done on the architecture of Rumah Kapitan, studying from the morphological and typological point of view, consisting of its positioning and orientation against the Musi River, spatial order, architectural form, and tectonics system, all of which are the manifestation of adaptation to the natural and socio-cultural environment of the Musi Riverside.  Keywords: adaptation; Musi riverside environment; Rumah Kapitan.
