Abstract

The interconnectedness of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and social work has been established in past studies. However, there is still a lack of participation of social workers in the CSR field. This study aimed to describe and analyze the CSR initiatives of Widus Foundation, Inc. (WFI), a CSR company in the Philippines whose foundation manager is a social worker. A case study was done on the CSR program delivery of the WFI by collecting data through an online interview and questionnaire with the WFI foundation manager. Thematic analysis was used to analyze online interviews with WFI volunteers and beneficiaries to determine CSR best practices of the WFI. Findings showed that the CSR framework used by the WFI focuses on being inclusive, impact-driven, sustainable, and innovative or unique. Moreover, CSR best practices of the WFI that emerged from interviews with stakeholders were: (1) inclusive, (2) sustainable, (3) impactful, and (4) good administration. Results of this study can be used to establish the importance of social workers in the CSR field. The best practices identified can also serve as a starting point to establish standards in CSR delivery. Future studies may also be done on a wider scale involving several CSR companies.

Abstract

The incorporation of community services about the need for a sustainable livelihood program was evaluated in this report. The four hundred (400) residents were taken as respondents, using full household enumeration. Most of the respondents in Rodriguez Rizal are purely uplifted and hailed, living a simple modern way of life brought about by industrialization in the region. However, considering the number of years they live in the area, they still have limited earnings due to limited educational qualifications. Most of the family's meager income is spent on their food. Therefore, poverty is always felt among them, so the need for a sustainable livelihood program that is important, productive, and beneficial is required to achieve a fulfilling and meaningful existence. The government provides limited economic and social infrastructure. The results demonstrate that there is a need for a program to enhance their living conditions. It is recommended that in partnership with the local government unit and the school, steps should be taken to improve the community's livelihood by expanding appropriate research-based community services. The following advice was proposed in response to the analysis carried out and from the data collected. A partnership between the Barangay Unit and the Local Government Unit is primarily via the Municipal Office for Social Welfare and Development and the Social Work and Community Development College. A Sitio Sapa Community mobilization operations such as capacity building enable them to be self-confident through the social security program. Through social growth, an extension program links the needs and resources of the Community to the residents of Sitio Sapa as part of the dual objective of the Conditional Cash Transfer being implemented in the region. Through investment in human resources (i.e., education, health, and nutrition), social development breaks the cycle of poverty. To address the capacities of the citizens in the region, a social welfare program will be planned.

Abstract

Teenage pregnancy is one of the most pressing issues in our society today, especially among Filipino women. The purpose of this research study is to describe the patterns and relationships between family communication and the chances of teenage pregnancy among young Filipino women. Parents play a crucial part in the growth and development of their children hence, they also influence the sexual behavior of adolescents. However, conservatism in Filipino families, rooted in religious beliefs, affects the information process of sex. Through the case study conducted using a phenomenological approach among six teenage mothers, the researchers presented the experiences and stories of teenage pregnancy of selected teenage mothers. From this, the researchers identified the common themes among Filipino families, and their implications on teenage pregnancy. Drawing from the Family Communication Pattern Theory, this research study explores how lack of parental communication within the family affects the chances of teenage pregnancy among Filipino youth. By capturing the experiences and perspectives of teenage mothers living in Region IV-A, the researchers present an informed understanding of the previously scrutinized analyses on the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy.

Abstract

This paper examines social work needs for transnational families within their local areas, based on the results of a research conducted on communities with connections to Afghanistan and Sri Lankan who live in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The research focused on speakers of three languages which are not covered by the multilingual services of the local governments despite their presence. The impact on their economic situations and daily lives due to Covid-19 arose from constraints and barriers in their surrounding environments from five primary factors, and the complex intertwining thereof: language; daily life customs/norms; residency status; employment, housing environment and community; and separation from family/relatives. We conclude that it is crucial to position transnational families within community social work along with to develop multicultural and integrated communities in order to provide transnational social work services across borders in future.

Abstract

The number of reported incidents of sexual violence continues to increase in Indonesia, giving rise to deep concerns and calls to prevent sexual violence from occurring in the future. Some experts call it “the Silent Epidemic” because it is estimated that the actual number of events is much higher than reported. Therefore, research on this issue needs to be continued to get input on the cause and effect, impact and prevention efforts. Researches on child sexual abuse and the impact throughout the lives of the survivors is highly important in providing scientific evidences for developing the interventions in social work practice. However, it also comes with very specific challenges when conducting a research on this issue. There are no specific guidelines regarding ethics and methodology in carrying out research on survivors of sexual violence. Therefore, in the future it is important to consider the methodological and ethical aspects before embarking on a research involving survivors of sexual violence. Based on the experience of carrying out this research, the aspects that potentially harm or put participants and researchers at risk can be minimized or even avoided. This experience can also provide reinforcement that research involving trauma survivors can benefit both the affected population as well as social work scientists and practitioners. This manuscript discusses the current thinking on these issues.

Abstract

This study on spending and savings pattern of Overseas Filipino Families (OFWs) and their left behind families is an attempt to understand the social and economic context of Filipino migration. Specifically, the study hopes to describe where the hard-earned money of OFWs goes and on whether or not they are able to save. Patterns of spending and saving of their left behind families were also investigated. The study employed a mixed methods research approach particularly survey of 150 respondents composed of 75 OFWs and 75 left behind families. An in-depth interview of 15 left behind families and key informants’ interview of three officials of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and Mindanao Migrants Center for Empowerment (MMCEAI) were also conducted to support findings of the survey. Significant findings of the study revealed that the top three spending items of OFWs include remittance to family back home, food and communication. The left behind families, on the other hand, spend the money they receive on education, food, utilities and transportation. The OFWs and their left behind families are able to save and invest. The study also found that some significant correlations exist between and among the following variables such as age, number of years working abroad, type of work, amount saved and amount of remittance. Major recommendations of the study include Financial Literacy and Investment training be given to OFWs and their families. The same trainings should be part of PDOS and Orientation modules given to OFWs and their families.

Abstract

The ratification of Law Number 14 of 2019 on social worker provides a new chapter for social workers in Indonesia. The existence of this law certainly provides a large enough opportunity for social workers to be able to open up more opportunities in providing quality and equitable social services in all regions in Indonesia. however, what needs to be realized is the importance of being able to understand the condition of the community especially regarding their knowledge related to this Law and of course social workers in general. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine public knowledge about Law Number 14 of 2019 on social worker. The research method is quantitative with descriptive type. The sampling technique used is simple random sample, where the number of respondents reached 222 people. The results of this study indicate that the knowledge of the community belongs to the very good group with a value reaching 50.75 points accumulatively, so to be able to maintain this, a concrete step is needed to be able to maintain or even maximize the knowledge of the community, where this can be implemented through socialization programs and of course research that periodically measures the level of public knowledge about Law Number 14 of 2019 on social worker.

Abstract

Community empowerment is one form of implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) carried out by companies. In its implementation, there are various models and strategies that can be used to support implementation. In Indonesia, the study of community empowerment by companies has become a new tradition in the development of CSR models. In the last decade, various models of community empowerment by companies have developed resulting from research related to CSR, especially those that examine community empowerment. This research is a systematic literature review to analyze the model of community empowerment by companies that are reviewed based on dissertation research sources published in the 2013-2020 period by Sebelas Maret University. There are 9 dissertation studies that were analyzed to find a synthesis of community empowerment models in corporate social responsibility programs. The majority of the studies were conducted in case studies with a qualitative approach. The findings of this study are that the model of community empowerment by companies in Indonesia is developed based on the “local context” and “actor relations” that exist within the scope of the community empowerment program.

Abstract

The Sembako program is one of the social protection programs launched by the Government of Indonesia to overcome poverty by providing food assistance. The sembako program is also expected to increase financial inclusion by using the prosperous family card as an electronic money and savings feature. This study uses a proper governance perspective with the research location in Banyumas Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The results showed that the implementation of the Sembako program went well. However, the recipients complain that  the types, quantities, and goods received are different from the instructed provisions, so they are not in accordance with the principles of proper governance. The sembako program contributes little to increasing financial inclusion because the KKS Card can only be used to take assistance from the sembako program and cannot access other banking services. It was found that the KKS Card was not held by the recipient of the basic food program, and the recipient did not memorize the KKS Card Pin. This study recommends that all shops and stalls carry out the distribution of the sembako program without being limited to certain stalls. The sembako program is not packaged so that beneficiaries are free to take basic food assistance according to the needs of their families.
