Abstract

Abstract This study concerrns with improving students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text through anticipation guide.The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ reading comprehension by applying anticipation guide. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VII students of SMP SWASTA TAMAN HARAPAN MEDAN totalling to 30 students. They were taught reading comprehension by anticipation guide. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 51, in the cycle I test the mean was 67,6. In the cycle II test the mean was 79,6. The percentage of orientation test was 16,6 %, cycle I test was 30 % and cycle II test was 73,3 %. The finding of the research showed that applying anticipation guide significantly improved students’ reading comprehension. The qualitative data show that the students were more interested and motivated on reading comprehension through anticipation guide. It is suggested that teachers should apply anticipation guide as one of strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract Lubis, Septiwi Hadi, 2013, Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement in Descriptive Text by Using Index Card Match Strategy, a thesis. Faculty of Language and Arts, State University of Medan This study deals with improving students’ reading comprehension by using Index Card Match strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIIa MTs.Lab. IKIP Al- Washliyah Medan which consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consists of four meetings and two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were multiple choice tests as the quantitative data and observation sheet, questionnaire sheet and diary notes as the qualitative data. Based on multiple choice test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In test I, the mean score was 63.05, in test II, the mean score was 67.63, and in test III the mean score was 72.77. The finding of the study indicated that the implementation of Index card Match strategy was successful since the criteria of success were achieved. The result of observation sheet and questionnaire sheet showed that students were active involved in the classroom. Based on the finding before, it’s concluded that Index Card Match strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension. Abstract

Abstract This study deals with the improving students’ achievement in reading narrative text by using reciprocal teaching. The research of this study was conducted by using action research. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students SMA Negeri 6 Medan. One class was taken as the subject, namely the students from X-5. There were 49 students, consisting of 22 male and 27 female. This research was done in two cycles; there was three meetings in cycle I and three meetings in cycle II. The instruments for collecting data were reading narrative text (25 items of multiple choice tests) teacher make test as quantitative data and interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes as qualitative data. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the treatment I was 61.79, for the treatment II was 72.24 and treatment III was 81.71. The data showed that the students’ score was rising in every treatment. The conclusion is that the use of reciprocal teaching method can improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It suggested to English teacher to apply reciprocal teaching method in teaching reading comprehension. Key words: reading, narrative text, reciprocal teaching.

Abstract

Abstract Students’ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Realia was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VII in Junior High School (SMP N 2 ) Kisaran. In the first evaluation (66, 2926) increased to the mean of second evaluation (76, 7560) and the mean of third evaluation (87, 0243). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of  Realia. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of Realia had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students’ achievement is improved when thay are tought through Realia. Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Realia

Abstract

Abstract This study deals with an attempt to improve students’ achievement in writing narrative paragraph through pictures. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA of SMA Swasta Gajah Mada consisting of 32 students. The data for the research were writing test as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet. Based on the writing tests, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In the first cycle, the mean score was 53,18. In the second test the mean score was 64,87, and in the third test the mean score was 72,5. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet and interview sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process as the response to the applied media pictures. The result of the research showed that pictures can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative paragraph.   Keywords: Writing, Narrative Paragraph, Picture

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate whether the application of Teams-Games-Tournament Technique improve the students achievement in Speaking. This study was an classroom action research. The subject of this study was class XI IPA 3 SMA Muhammadiyah 8 Kisaran which consists of 35 students. The study was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II was consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative (oral speaking test) and qualitative data (observation sheet and diary note). Based on speaking scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation and based on observation sheet and diary note, it was found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students could enlarge their thinking process. The result of this study showed that Teams-Games-Tournament improved students’ achievement in speaking.   Keywords: Speaking, Teams-Games-Tournament Technique, Test, Data, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

This study focused to improve Students’ Vocabulary Achievement by Applying Anagram Plus Flashcards. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was students in class VII-7 of SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar. There were 32 students taken as the subject. The instrument for collecting data were the test for vocabulary and diary notes, questionnaire sheets, observation sheet, and interview for process of teaching and learning vocabulary. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The result of the research showed that the mean of students’ score in pre-test was 56.41, the mean of students’ score in post-test I was 69.22. The mean of students’ score in post-test II was 76.72. There were improvement of students’ achievement from 56.41-76.72 about 20.31 point and that score (76.72) was excelled the indicator (75).  Based on diary notes, questionnaire sheets, observation sheet, and interview, it found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students were active, cooperative, enthusiastic and interested in learning vocabulary. There were 16 students (50%) agreed that the students active in learning process, 20 students (62.5%) were interested, 20 students (62.5%) were enthusiastic and 19 students (59.37%) were agreed that strategy of learning was effective. It can be concluded that the application of anagram plus flashcards had successfully improved the students’ vocabulary achievement at the SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar.   Keywords:  Improve, Anagram Plus Flashcards, Vocabulary, Data, Achievement

Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Group Investigation Method on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade X, Senior High School Singosari (SekolahMenengahAtas: SMA), which consisted of 60 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.77, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 4.26 > t-table value 2.00. The findings indicate that applying Group Investigation Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. So, English teachers are suggested to use Group Investigation Method in order to improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is designed to improve the students’ reading comprehension in English through Think Pair Share strategy. the objective of the research is to develop Think Pair Share to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The research was  conducted by using  classroom action research. The finding showed that Think Pair Share strategy was successful in improving students’ reading comprehension. The improvement couls be seen from the increase of students’ reading scores. Besides, the finding also showed that Think Pair Share strategy was effective in enhancing the students’ participation, especially in term of sharing ideas, asking and answering questions.
