Abstract

This article discusses the tradition of fresh flour which is still practiced by ethnic Malays in North Sumatra in various traditional ceremonies that are considered sacred. In this article the author uses the historical method. The historical method according to Gottschalk (1986) is a process of critically examining and analyzing records of past relics. Imaginative reconstruction of the past based on data obtained by going through that process is called historiography. The results showed that this tradition of plain flour had been practiced and was influenced by beliefs before the arrival of Islam to the North Sumatra region. Fresh flour comes from the word tampung Tawar which means the activity of accepting bidders by being accommodated (to hold hands) as a form of receiving bidders (drugs) and has a magical function. This tradition is also a means of asking God for blessings and privileges, so that all good things are poured out for people who are offered flour and kept away from bad things in their lives. In addition, this tradition is also a symbol of integration between religion and culture, especially in the North Sumatra region.

Abstract

This paper discusses the history of Siantan Island (Anambas) in the South China Sea as a center of pirate activity (lanun and political escape areas in the 18th century. The writing uses historical historical research methods and uses library research to extract sources. From the research, it is known that a number of nobles from the Sultanate Siak, the Sultanate of Palembang and the Bugis nobility from Luwu moved to Siantan after losing the power struggle in their native area. In Siantan, the nobles gathered strength by relying on the Orang Laut. The existence of the Orang Laut became the main force to become pirates (lanun), rulers of the sea and carry out piracy in the south China sean and The South China Sea and other areas. The act of piracy ois not only political purposes, but also for economic reasons to seek wealth. Marriage ties are a powerful tool in strengthening relations between the immigrant aristocrats and the Siantan people. The nobles in Siantan then returned to their kingdom and successfully seize power. Raja Alam became the Sultan of Siak, the Five Opu Bugis brothers ruled in the Kingdoms of Johor, Riau and Lingga. Meanwhile, Prince Jayawikrama succeeded in seizing the throne of the Sultan of Palembang with the title Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I.

Abstract

Debating the arrival of Islam in the archipelago, many historians have their own views and arguments. Arab trade in the archipelago has left very clear traces. This trace is compared as evidence of the early emergence of Islam. Thomas W. Arnold, John Crawfurd, L. W. C Van den Berg and Michael Laffan are figures who have the opinion that Arab traders had an important role in the process of entering Islam in the archipelago. This research is a theoretical study with the concept of library research which reconstructs the thoughts and views of these figures to see the influence of Arab traders in the archipelago. Even in the 2nd century BC Arab traders traded with Sri Lanka. The trading ability of the Arabs then solidified their dominance in the West-Eastern trade world which has intensified since the 7th century AD. Although some experts doubt the ability of Arab traders and their relations in the spread of Islam, Arab trading activities have been able to contribute to the Islamic world in the archipelago.

Abstract

Islamic education in Aceh in the early 20th century was in a phase of significant decline. This has an impact on a rigid learning system and only studies religious issues, western science is considered something that is forbidden to learn. This increasingly complicated situation poses a challenge for reformist-minded ulama who want to reform the face of Islamic education in Aceh.
