Abstract

This present study aims to explore the phenomenon of the Qur’an recitation by employing a ‘Kempekan’ model, which is transmitted at Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) Babakan. Kempekan is a style of tartil (a proper manner) recitation of the Qur’an promoted at Pesantren Kempek. A qualitative approach was designed in this ethnographic study. The data were collected through observation and interviews. The findings demonstrate two important points obtained from the living Qur’an of Kempekan. Firstly, the phenomenon of Kempekan which has emerged amid the pesantren not only to maintain the originality of the Qur’an recitation, but also to shape a new tradition of both its transmission and transformation patterns. It can be noticed from the development of the practice of today’s Qur’an recitation in Indonesia. Secondly, the surge of Kempekan has pervaded a plethora of cultural aspects occurring in Babakan. This can be evidenced from communities in the so-called Region III Cirebon, namely: Majalengka, Kuningan, Indramayu, and Cirebon, who attended the khatm al-Qur’an. The transmission and transformation of Kempekan raise the dialectical model of the Qur’an and its distinctive culture. The recitation of the Qur’an is not only limited to the rituals of ubuddiyah (religious merits), but also impacts on aspects of culture, economy, the structure of society, and a new model of piety.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the values of nationalism materials in Islamic boarding schools. So far there has been a judgement believing that Islamic boarding schools are the center of radicalism in Indonesia. The militancy and aggressiveness of radicals are considered as the impact of education carried out in Islamic boarding schools. This study refutes research findings that assess Islamic boarding schools as the basis of radicalism. Through a study of the curriculum, books and teachings carried out in Islamic boarding schools, as well as the values of nationalism and tolerance, this research was carried out with work principles and library research methods. The data is collected from literature, especially the results of research, scientific publications and developing discourses related to pesantren and nationalism. The results of this study indicate that radicalism and terrorism do not develop in Islamic boarding schools. Instead of teaching radicalism and terrorism, the teachings in pesantren shave become the seed of the nationalism. Historical traces show that pesantren are an important part of the birth of the state, becoming a stronghold against colonialism. In the context of a multi-cultural, racial and religious nation, Islamic boarding schools not only teach the value and direction of religion, but also become a strategic media in instilling nationalism values, respecting each other and respecting differences, among persons with the same faith, and even to non-Muslims.

Abstract

This article discusses the ideological contestation of the two mass organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), that are the spearhead of the two paradigms in determining the beginning of the month of qamariah. Hisab is initiated by Muhammadiyah and rukyat is pioneered by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). These two paradigms are the cause of the emergence of tension conflict due to the non-uniformity of the method of determining the beginning of the qamariah month in Indonesia. By using a power relations approach and reading of religious commodification, this article concludes that fragmentation of religious authority has given rise to a real phenomenon in the midst of society in the form of ideological political contestation played by two large mass organizations in Indonesia in determining the beginning of the qamariah month, NU and Muhammadiyah. The conception of power relations with the government is a problem that is often used as a basis for maintaining ideology and belief in a paradigm that has long been built. Moreover, religious issues drawn in ideological interests have led to a layer of group fanaticism which often makes religion a commodification of pragmatic interests.

Abstract

Kiai Shaleh Darat is considered as a scholar who has a diversity of scientific disciplines. In contemporary Sufistic studies of the Archipelago (Indonesia), he has not obtained a decent place as in the study of Azra (2007), Mulyati (2006), Anwar and Shalihin (2006). Nevertheless, the sufistic side of the teachings of the Kiai Muhammad Shaleh al-Samarani looks very striking in each of his works. This study seeks to analyze the mysticism of the Kiai Shaleh Darat in the book Haża Al-Kitab Matnu Al-Ḥikam. Through qualitative methods, the research data comes from literature review. This study succeeded in uncovering Sufism developed by the Kiai Shaleh Darman with tasawuf akhlaqi (sunni-amali), in which not only contains Sufism teachings which emphasize the basic concept of Islam, namely the submission of a servant to his God, but also the path of humanity. The narrative of divinity and humanity merges into Sufism. Kiai Shaleh lied between traditionalism and modernity, locality and globalism. This characteristic is reflected in the discourse that was rolled out: submission, illiteracy, world problems, nationalism, hard work, and clothing models intersecting as a path to God.
