Abstract

The Church has consistently recognized that catholic teachers have an essential role in Catholic education and must serve as witnesses to the faith, in both word and deed. The constant appreciation for the role of catholic teachers is presented in the Church’s magisterial teachings. A review of these teachings provides understanding of the importance of the Catholic teacher and the teacher ’s role in fulfilling the mission of the Church by preparing students to live virtuous lives in service to society and the Church. The Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on Christian Education, Gravissimum Educationis, outlines the basic principles of Christian education, acknowledging the Church’s reliance on Catholic educators and the importance of preparation in secular and religious knowledge. Twelve years later, the impact of cultural and social pluralism on Catholic education was addressed by the Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for Education in The Catholic School. Supported by these and other magisterial documents, this article explicates the teachings of the Catholic Church summarizing the role of lay Catholic teachers and their qualifications; relationship to the Church; and Gospel witness, the spiritual and professional qualifications required of teachers to effectively impart an authentic Catholic education, expectations associated with apostolic witness and conduct of an authentic Christian role model. The purpose of the article is to provide an account of the expectations and qualities deemed important by the Church for teachers to maintain strong Catholic identity in schools and thereby fulfill the mission of the Church in this apostolate.

Abstract

There are two dangers of millennial era: economism and simulacra. Economism can change paradigm of thinking: from “unconditional love” to profit-capitalist calculations. A created simulacra is capable of reconstructing society to be a hyperreality world, that is, a society which does not understand reality as such but what the realtity is referred to or designed for economic interests (consumptive society). This danger becomes a serious pastoral challenge toprophetic role of Catholic Religion Teacher. One of possible solutions is to strengthen teacher ’sidentity through some modes: first, to live out the task as a vocation; second, living acovenant spirituality; third, being an agent of God’s image/likeness; fourth, to bear witness as disciples of Christ. These four modes, undoubtedly, will help Catholic teachers to play a professional and prophetic role.

Abstract

Rabbi among the Jews was the very important group. They had the most strategic and central roles among the Jewish community, not only in the religious field, but also in differents fields of life. Shmuel Kogan, a Jewsih Scholar, responding the question about the Rabbi, testified clearly that “rabbi was the servant of community ”. The Rabbis in the past offered their whole life to teach the Torah, the most fundamental law among the Jews. Based on the Torah, all the Jews in the past were able to struggle in responding different challanges and difficulties. Based on this experience, we could say that the Bible, the word of God written by human being and inspired by the High Being can be used as the inspiration to build a sustainable community. Reflecting on our millennial communities, especially among the Christian youth, we find out that most of our chiristians millennial youth are less interested to the religion. The word of God, written in the Bible is only a kind of strange stories that has no relationship to their millennial experiences and needs. Facing a such challenging condition, the experience of the rabbis in the past could be a good model and example for the teachers who are responsible to teach the Religion and the Bible to the millennial christen student. Using the experiences of the Rabbis among the Jews in the past, the teachers of religion can develop a best way of teaching religion for the millenials christian.

“Guru” by profession is a leading figure in character building. He is responsible for accompanying his/her students in their search of values. Original meaning of guru is spiritual director who guide ones to reach enlighten and to transfer knowledge. Three major traditions in the East (Hindi, Budhism and Jainism) ascribe guru a high position in religious rites and education. Based on this original meaning of guru, this article tries to adopt it to modern meaning of teacher as a person who provides spiritual and transcendental values to the students. As far as catholic religion teacher concerned, the role of the teacher stemms from his being as a catholic. Being a catholic inspires him to act in accordance to his faith. Abstract

The text of the Scriptures is basically neutral but also dynamic. Scripture text can change in a dynamic line when entering the life space (context) of each owner of the text. The text makes a person more alive because of the text and context involved in the dialectics of human life both as individualy and society. Mohammed Arkoun contributed some of his critical thoughts about the interpretation of the text in dialectical conditions of text and context. Arkoun’s ideas belong to a revolutionary epistemological idea. On the one hand, Arkoun believes in God’s messages as the only source of truth, and singularly, on the other hand Arkoun sues the truth when ithas beenat human hands. For Arkoun, the text must always be adapted to the context. Text always has space and time. Therefore, the matter of claiming exclusive truth in each religion should not provoke the conflict. Arkouns’s idea could be an inspiration in improving dialogue interreligious in Indonesia.
