Abstract

Foodbank is an organization that obtains food from donor organizations and individuals, proceeds the donated food products at storage facilities and distributes them to the end users, either directly or indirectly via charitable institutions. Foodbanks have been developed in several countries to tackle food waste and hunger problems. This research uses the case of FoodCycle Indonesia (FCI) as one of the food banks in Indonesia that has been in operation since 2017. The purpose of this study is to analyze the sustainability of FCI using system dynamics simulation to identify the factors that influence its sustainability. We develop the initial model based on literature and modify it according to interview results with representatives from FCI and its two partners (charitable organizations that redistribute the donated food to beneficiaries). The model consists of partners, wedding partners, food redistribution, transportation cost, community, volunteers, beneficiaries, and food balance subsystems. Based on the simulation results it can be concluded that FCI will be sustainable as long as the growth of the food supply is constant, and the organization has the financial ability to support the distribution of donated food to the beneficiaries.

Abstract

Community participation is inseparable from youth participation to achieve sustainable household waste management. Some research pointed out that the presence of a waste treatment facility (WTF) near the waste generator may influence community participation in waste management but only a few of them discussed the relationship between WTF and youth participation. This paper discusses about WTF’s impact on youth participation in household waste management with a case study in Paulan Village, Central Java. Paulan Village has succeeded to stop transporting waste to the regional landfill since the local government operates WTF in mid-2019. However, does its existence influence youth participation in household waste management? This study used field observation, questionnaires, and in-depth interview methods, involving four key informants. Based on the descriptive content analysis, it was found that the presence of local WTF does not have a strong influence on increasing youth participation unless there is intensive intervention involving stakeholders, especially the local government. This paper suggests that intensive campaigns, like monthly or bimonthly socialization, and rewards are needed to optimize youth participation in household waste management. Besides, adults’ intervention is also needed in guiding the young generation to give more contributions to the community by involving in household waste management.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of environmental conflict to the community around the Batang Coal Fired Steam Power Plant as a case study. Rejection of it appears in the early stage of the construction because of its thread to the environment and economic resources, mostly to farmers and fishers. Batang Coal Fired Steam Power Plant has track records of conflict turmoil from behalf of the Ujungnegoro, Kandeman District, Central Java. This study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and FGD methods to affected districts and related government agencies, as well as analyzing environmental pollution. Social impact assessments (SIA) are a framework to investigate the causes, dynamics, and resolution of social-environmental conflicts. This study found out that the root cause of environmental conflict starts with ecological degradation. The dynamics of social and economic will accumulate until a form of conflict. This study offers conflict management models in resolving social-environmental conflict.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the debate on structural violence by state, by explaining how pro-human rights policies ironically can be produced, implemented, and used by state as instruments to perpetrate human rights violations. By using the concept of structural violence, this research is offered that the Indian government has allowed the practice of female foeticide in India to continue to occur among India's poor women from 1994 to 2014 through the implementation of anti-sex-selective abortion (anti-SSA) policy: Pre-Course Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PCPNDT) Act of 1994. This study attempts to investigate how the Indian government perpetuates structural violence by producing, implementing, and maintaining this provenly ineffective human rights policy by using qualitative method and secondary data. This paper finds that the neglect of intersectionality analysis in the design of the policy is a form of structural violence conducted by the Indian government. In this case Indian government has implemented segmentation and marginalization in order to allow the continuation of female foeticide among its poor women for the last three decades. Generally, the neglect of intersectionality analysis in the policy represents the government’s support towards the high preference of boys and extremely low preference of girls, especially poor girls and girls from the outcast. Although the anti-SSA policy has been in place since 1994, data on sex ratios at birth from 1982 to 2014 show that the gap between the births of girls and boys is becoming more and more imbalanced. Various researchers found that the policy was not effective in resolving the problem of sex ratios due to its poor implementation management that caused difficulties in arresting the perpetrators of SSA and regulating the practice up to the grassroots level. However, this paper argues that poor management is not the main cause the policy is failing. This research finds that the Indian government deliberately excludes & does not recognize the identity of poor & outcast women in the policy design. In fact, the practice of SSA is mostly carried out by women in these segments.

Abstract

Indonesia is listed as the fifth biggest country with the biggest number of populations in the world population review with a population of approximately 275.7 million people. Indonesia also has high fertility rate which signifies a high demand in the market for meeting the production needs of diapers. Disposable diapers are one of the most purchased items by parents in general, yet they are also one of the most environmentally damaging waste products. Despite the fact that reusable diapers exist, consumer demand for disposable diapers is still rising. The prevalence of global issues and discussions regarding pollution and waste generation has received responses from various sectors of society, leading to the formation of movements and communities focused on environmental awareness. Mamaberclodi is an online community based for all mothers who use modern cloth diapers (clodi) for their children and the community pioneer who gives cloth diapers class online and free. In this article, we will explore the impact of Mamaberclodi as online communities on the issue of diapers waste in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative approach which uses concurrent embedded design mixed method that combines qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis uses data from literatures review and depth interview, while the quantitative analysis uses Mamaberclodi data from their internal survey.  Qualitative analysis is used to analyze interview data. Quantitative analysis uses statistical descriptive analysis to describe the data. This research provides the data from literature review, interviews from four informants, and Mamaberclodi internal data to conclude how this online community impacted the reduction of diaper waste in Indonesia. This research concludes that online communities, such as Mamaberclodi are needed to reduce the amount of waste generated. However, further research with more data is needed to support this research.
