JELP: Journal of English Language and Pedagogy is a journal for the study and development of English in the scope of educational and teaching studies, culture, literature, and linguistics. In its entity as a forum and media for: 1) developing knowledge based on literature and empirical results, 2) encouraging the birth of new research thoughts and actions within the scope of concepts and practices of developing English within the scope of related studies. This journal aims to advance and disseminate knowledge in the field of English language education and teaching, as well as the relation of English in the sphere of culture, literature and linguistics which is being studied in Indonesia, in order to increase the power and results of educational institutions/organizations/companies in Indonesia. This media is aimed at managers, lecturers, students, teachers and other parties who have an interest in the field of English education and teaching, as well as the relationship between the role of English and the realms of culture, literature and linguistics.

Abstract

The ability in the field of learning media development must be possessed by students who are indeed prepared to become educators or expert in the field of learning media development. The aims of this study: (1) to describe the steps for implementing project based learning in the course of developing learning media; (2) describe the results obtained from the application of project based learning in the learning media development course. The research method use in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study: (1) the steps for implementing project based learning begin with planning, namely by preparing lesson plans and preparing learning tools, the process is carried out by giving assignment to students to make papers and examples of learning media development, evaluation is carried out by assessing all the resulting learning media development products; (2) the result of the implementation of the project based learning strategy is an understanding of the materials and products or works resulting from the development of learning media.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to measure the effectiveness of Audiobook in teaching reading comprehension to ninth grade students of MTs Pesantren Al Amin Mojokerto in academic year 2021 / 2022. The researcher conducted a quantitative research through pre-experimental design with One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. For the instrument research, researcher used pretest and posttest to collect the data. The researcher took one class of ninth grade students that contain of thirty-two students. The researcher took five meeting for this research. First meeting was giving the pretest, second until forth meeting were giving the treatment, and fifth meeting was giving posttest. In this research, the researcher used t-test sample for analyzing the data. The result show that there is different mean score between pretest and posttest. The mean score of pretest is 65,94 and the mean score of posttest is 79,97. For the t-test result, it gained higher than t-table. The t-test result is 6,71 while the result of t-table for df=31 is 1,695 in significance 5% (0,05). It proved that the result is significant. From the result, it can be concluded that teaching reading comprehension for narrative text by using Audiobook is successfully implemented for ninth grade students of MTs Pesantren Al Amin Mojokerto in academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

Linus Suryadi is Indonesian writer who often use a lot of Javanese diction in his writings. One of his famous lyrical prose is Pengakuan Pariyem who tells about the life, thoughts, and spiritual belief of Javanese woman that still hold her strong culture and customs. This paper is aimed to find the existentialism aspect in the lyrical prose by using qualitative descriptive methods. It emphasizes on the habit of Javanese people according to the tradition, customs and spiritual belief that depicted in the lyrical prose to reveal the way Javanese people show their existence and looking for the meaning of life as human being. This study find out that Javanese people according to Linus Suryadi is theistic and somehow even though they have faith in the existence of God, they still mixing up between religion and ancient belief. The existentialism aspects that are portrayed in the lyrical prose are the freedom to choose, responsible of the choice, anxiety feeling, and existence precedes essence.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form of attitudes and anxiety, and level of anxiety that experienced by students in the listening class on students’ of English Study Program at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu. This study uses a descriptive method with a quantitative approach of survey type. The sample in this study was the second semester students’ of English education with a total of 47 students’. The research data was taken using a questionnaire with a total of 28 items related to attitudes and anxiety. The attitude questionnaire was divided into 2 categories, positive and negative. The result of data analysis in positive statements, the average score is 3.61 (72.1%). Likewise with negative statements, the average score is 3.48 (70%). For students’ anxiety levels, based on the results of data analysis, 29 students (62%) categorized into "relaxed" and 13 students’ (28%) are "very relaxed", and only 5 students (11%) belong to the moderate level of anxiety with the predicate "Midly Anxious". Based on these results, it can be concluded that the attitude students on the listening class is positive and students level of anxiety are tend to be low and the type of students anxiety are debilitative or positive.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the effectiveness of the zoom application for junior high school students. This study uses experimental research with a pre-experimental design one-group pretest-posttest with a quantitative description of the method. The subjects of this study were 30 eighth grade students in semester 1. The Paired Sample t-test table showed that the average speaking score of the students on the pre-test and post-test increased from 43.70 to 55.47. This shows that the students' scores increased after being taught by using video blogs. The results of the paired sample t test also showed a sig value of .000. As a condition of the hypothesis, whether the significance value is less than the significance level (0.05), it means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. From the above requirements it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ho) is accepted. This means that there is a significant difference in students' speaking scores before and after being taught by using the zoom application as a media learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the ideology contained in the text of KH Said Aqil Shiradj's speech on the commemoration of the 73rd NU Muslim celebrations. The data obtained in video form was then transcribed in text form. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis approach which consists of text analysis in the form of macro, super, and micro structures, analysis of social cognition, and social analysis. Text analysis seeks to analyze the themes, structure, and linguistic features of speech. The analysis of social cognition seeks to analyze the production of speech texts and social analysis to analyze the discourse that develops in society. From the two speeches analyzed there are ideologies, namely religious national ideologies. This ideology is in line with the ideology adopted by NU which is based on thereligious scriptures of Muslims. With this ideology, KH Said Aqil Shiradj uses the basis of the Islamic religion that comes from the hol book of Muslims which is used as a basis in creating a national spirit to play a role in maintaining the unity and integrity of the Indonesian state

Abstract

This study discusses the sibling incest phenomenon reflected in Kody Keplinger’s novel A Midsummer Nightmare. The purpose of this study is to reveal the sibling incest factors contained in Keplinger's novel. In conducting this study, there are several theories which are applied in study, namely psychodynamic by Sigmund Freud's and psychoanalysis by Karen Horney. Those theories are suitable for analyze the phenomenon of sibling incest happens, and causing factors of sibling incest in line of the research problems that has been formulated in this study. The writer also applies context-oriented approach by Mario Klarer to obtain the adequate data. In collecting data, the writer conducts some steps namely, close reading, documenting data, and taking notes, while in analyzing data the writer conducts deep analyzing, describing, and presenting data. Therefore, the writer can identify the phenomenon of sibling incest happens, and several factors for the occurrence of sibling incest in the novel A Midsummer Nightmare by Kody Keplinger, such as (1) between age peers, (2) the law of homogamy, (3) genetic sexual attraction (GSA). Furthermore, The results of this study indicates that this novel attempts to reflect the phenomenon of sibling incest through the character of Natan and Whitley who have problems in their life that lead them to forbidden love. Good parenting and upbringing will help shape the child’s personality to grow well. Love and full attention can make a child find a good way of life. In this novel, the sibling incest factors mentioned above describe a daughter who lacks love and attention from her parents due to the broken home that befell her family, so that she grows up by bad personalities and even love her own brother and having sex for many times.

Abstract

Facing the Society 5.0 era, the world of education plays an important role in improving the quality of human resources. As well to education some elements and stakeholders such as the government, community organizations and the whole community also participated in welcoming the coming Society 5.0 era. To answer the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 in the world of education required life skills of the 21st century or better known as 4C (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Collaboration). This research method using questionnaire survey by asking several questions to the respondents and doing direct observation at the research site. The total number of them was 12 with details 7 teachers and 5 parents of students respectively. The results of the study show that the majority of respondents agree that it is very important to hone children's English skills for preparing the challenges in the Society 5.0 era. Where the times are getting more advanced and global competition is a necessity. Self-preparation through English language skills started from the education is a solution today. So that children have no difficulty to adapt in the modern or digital world and it is hard to be competitive looking for job vacancies in the future. Consequently, children are expected be technologically literate and fluent English in Society 5.0, considering that English has been established as an international language, business language, and technology language.

Abstract

The Holocaust is a massacre tragedy in World War II which resulted in more than 7 people died. The massacre was carried out by the Germans against the Jews, where the Germans considered the Aryans to be the holiest tribes on earth. The tragedy of the Holocaust formed many perspectives of opinion and also got a lot of pros and cons. Therefore, the author conducted research on the Holocaust of World War II on the propaganda aspect in “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” novel . This is to get the results of the causes behind the Holocaust in World War II and the Holocaust propaganda itself. The research uses the Historical Approach in carrying out research, and uses the theory of New Historicism that was coined by Greenblatt. The method used is close-reading and data collection using note-taking, in which the source is obtained from accurate data. The results obtained from this study are a form of the author's concern for the science of the history of Holocaust propaganda, during World War II for the facts behind the Holocaust, as well as the impact that has occurred after the event in the present.

Abstract

Reading is one of crucial skills for mastering English proficiency. It does not only involve the ability to pronounce correctly, but also to understand the text as a whole. It does not only have tremendous power when it comes to fuelling the development of all aspects of language ability, its importance to the entirety of a human life cannot really be overstated nowadays. The fact that English is full of silent letters and unexpected sounds provoke the learners to simply memorize the spelling of a word in order to recognize its written form in the future. The inconsistency between letters and phonemes, more than one way to spell the same sound, are the basic problems for the learners, especially beginners. Dealing with the matter of inconsistency, the technique and strategy to learn English is gradually upgraded. This study applies descriptive analysis method to reveal the sight word recognition strategy focusing on upgrading the competency in mastering vocabularies and reading. The findings show that by activating the recognition of sight word and associating phoneme (sounds) and grapheme (letters), learners tend to be more easily figure out the words and understand the text. By having sight words vocabularies through orthographic mapping, the process of understanding reading text becomes easier. Learners know the words more quickly since sight word recognition improves reading fluency and efficiency. In its process, as learners see the word, they automatically activate the recognition of its meaning and pronunciation at the same time.
