Abstract

The problem being analyzed during this research is dissimilarity in the effective reading ability between one student and others and the factors that affect the effective reading speed. The method used was a case study method combined with a quantitative methodology. Twenty-seven students were involved as the research subjects. The data were obtained from observation text entitled "D'topeng Museum Angkut" read by the students. The process of calculating reading time was calculated independently by the students using a stopwatch. The results showed that (1) the average reading speed of the students was in the moderate or sufficient speed category; (2) the reading speed per student was in the adequate category (250 – 350 wpm). Even three students were in the effective category (above 350 wpm); and (3) concentration was one of the factors that influenced the effective reading speed. It can be concluded that in the analysis of the effective reading speed in class XI IPS 1 at SMAN 1 MOJO, the students had a moderate or adequate reading speed.

The research aims to see students' awareness of their competence based on their self-confidence in speaking English. In this study, the qualitative descriptive approach was employed to collect thorough responses and student views on their speaking ability and confidence level. The researchers introduced respondents to the notion of self-confidence before asking them to complete the questionnaire and conduct an interview. Respondents' confidence appears to be related to their perspective of their speaking ability. Students cannot claim to be at ease every time they speak a foreign language because speaking is such a vital element of communication yet they are motivated to learn and practice English. According to the respondents, while confidence is a fantastic place to start in speaking, it will not take them very far unless they consistently practice enhancing their language competence. The most typical approach is to engage in conversation whenever feasible.

Abstract

As one of fundamental receptive skill, listening skill is mostly neglected during the English language teaching learning process. The challenges on the process of teaching listening which may come from both the students or the teacher mostly become a problem that makes written mode of English language learning more dominant. The strategies on teaching listening skill might not be varied that causes the teaching learning process ineffective. This research is aimed to introduce the use of song in engaging students’ attention and creating fun teaching-learning process to increase the students’ achievement in listening skill. The research used quasi-experimental quantitative design. The number of sample used in this research is 72 students in the first grade of SMAN Gurah, Kediri. A test is used to collect the data of students’ achievement in listening. The test indicates the significant difference between the experimental group and control group as the researcher used the t test formula. From the result of data analysis, we find that the t-test is 2,53 at degree of freedom (df) 70 at 0,05 alpha (1,67). It means that the t-test is higher than the t-table (2,53>1,67). Thus, the hypothesis that teaching listening using song is improving students’ achievement on listening skill can be accepted.
