Abstract

The purpose of this research to know the students strategies in comprehending reading section on TOEFL at the English Home Community. The researcher applied qualitative research to explore students strategies in comprehending reading section on TOEFL at the English Home Community. The subjects were ten students at the English Home Community. The instrument were questionnaire and interview. It was found that reading comprehension on TOEFL section used by the English Home Communitys students are: students of English Home Community read the question first, read the direction, find out the meaning of unfamiliar words by using context, do skimming and scanning reading strategy, guessing the meaning by using background knowledge, reading the key words and reading the text first.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of (1) to find out whether the improvement of short story writing skills using the media song of class VIII Muhammadiyah 1 Middle School Tidore Kepulauan. (2) To find out how to improve short story writing skills by using the media song of class VIII Muhammadiyah Middle School 1 Tidore Kepulauan. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive method. The population in this study were grade VIII Muhammadiyah 1 Tidore Kepulauan Middle School as many as 25 students while the sample in this study was a total of 25 students as much as 100%. The results of this study are (1) Observation, Indonesian language teachers have taught students with learning material to write short stories through using song media and the teacher has carried out the learning process well in accordance with the Learning Implementation Plan (RPP); (2) Interviews, students interested and happy with learning to write short stories using song media. Media songs are very helpful for them in determining the theme they will make short stories. The theme presented is about friendship that is unique to their world; (3) The initial test (pretest) of students who get very good qualifications (SB) is 3 students by 12%, students who get good qualifications (B) as many as 5 students by 20%, students who get quite good qualifications (CB) as many as 9 students by 36%, students who get poor qualifications (KB) as many as 8 students by 32%, and students who get less qualifications (KS) as many as 0 students at 0%. Has not yet achieved an increase in value; (4) Final test (posttest) of students who get very good qualifications (SB) as many as 8 students by 32%, students who get good qualifications (B) as many as 11 students at 44%, students who get quite good qualifications (CB) as much as 4 students by 16%, students who get poor qualifications (KB) as much as 2 students by 8%, and students who get a score of 1 qualifier less (KS) as many as 0 students at 0%. It means that the use of song can improve students’ scoor in writing short story.

Abstract

The problems in this research are (1) What is the improvement of writing ability in the personal experience of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Ternate City? (2) How is the improvement of writing skills for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Ternate City? The research was conducted with the objectives of (1) to find out the results of writing on the personal experiences of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Ternate City (2) to find out the improvement in the writing skills of eighth grade students of Ternate State Junior High School 2. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The population in this study were 150 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 2 Ternate City. While the sample in this study was 30 students or 50%. Based on the results of the analysis and conclusions, it can be seen that (1) the observations of teachers in the field of Indonesian language studies have carried out the teaching and learning process well in accordance with the implementation of the curriculum and the use of learning tools in the form of syllabus and lesson plans in writing personal experiences; (2) teacher interviews in the field of Indonesian language studies have taught students with personal experience writing learning materials to improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The goal of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia (TEFLIN), or in a wider context–teaching English as a global language (TEGL) or teaching English as an international language (TEIL), is that the students are able to “authentically” communicate with others using the target language in real life situations: attending lectures or seminars, having a chat via Internet, discussing TV programmes, bargaining items in markets, etc. When the communication takes place, the four macro language skills are integratedly employed to convey and receive messages as the contents of communications. This vividly seems that language in use must have contents because language itself merely consists of symbols, grammatical rules in the forms of patterns, and skills. In TEFLIN or TEGL/TEIL, therefore, the teachers/lecturers of English should cater the students with meaningful contents appropriate for them to develop their four macro language skills in meaningful learning atmosphere. The contents encompass the target culture and students’ local wisdom related to their real-life situations. The target culture is employed as meaningful input texts for receptive skills: listening and reading. The input texts are then employed to explore and elaborate on local wisdom related to the target culture for productive skills: writing and speaking. The steps proposed are as follows: 1) warming the students up with relevant situation to the topic, 2) presenting input texts about the target culture to discuss (listening or reading), 3) analysing the ways of expressing ideas used in the target language –English, 4) analysing and discussing the language elements, and 5) employing the learned ways of expressing ideas in productive skills (writing and speaking) about local wisdom related to students’ real life situations in the target language.

Abstract

Research purposes knowing how verbal and non-verbal meanings in the anthropolinguistic study lala dance! To what extent are the verbal and non-verbal meanings in the anthropolingusistic lala dance? Research Methods Research Methodology Researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. Qualitative research is a study aimed at describing and analyzing phenomena, events, social activities, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, thoughts, people individually or in groups. The results of the observations that the researchers obtained while conducting the research started from January 3, 2023 to February 5, 2023. Based on the results of observations made by researchers in the research process in Sagea Village, North Weda District, Central Halmahera Regency, the Lala traditional dance movement was taken from the story of a woman which mimics the movements of seagulls when they are preparing to jump to catch fish.

Abstract

Vocabulary is crucial in all language acquisitions, whether the first language, second language or foreign language. Due to the importance of vocabulary, a comprehensive language learning strategy is needed. The present study investigates the various vocabulary learning strategies used by undergraduate Indonesian students majoring English Language Education Study Programin learning new words. Descriptive qualitative was applied as a research method to find out the objective of the research. The techniques of data collection used in this research were observation and questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research was the interactive model analysis from Miles and Huberman that consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that there were seventeen strategies used by the students in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

Literature is a form of one's ideas through a view of the social environment around them by using beautiful language. Literature is present as the author's contemplation of existing phenomena. The Piano in a Glass Box is a type of prose literary work that represents various phenomena and values in social life. The values contained and often appear in the novel Piano di Kaca Kaca are moral values and social values. Social value is something that becomes a measure and assessment of the appropriateness of an attitude aimed at social life. The social values contained in the novel Piano in the Glass Box by Agnes Jessica are the attitude of helping each other, caring, compassion, responsibility, and cooperation. While the moral values conveyed in literary works are basically the values conveyed by the author in order to educate humans in all aspects or issues of life and life so that humans can regulate their behavior to become good human beings. The moral values contained in the novel Piano in a Glass Box are about how real social life is. In moral values there are types and forms of morals which include (1) human relations with oneself; (2) Human relations with other humans in the social sphere including their relationship with the natural environment; (3) Human relationship with God. Besides that, in moral values there are basic moral principles which include (1) the principle of goodness; (2) The principle of justice; (3) The principle of self-respect. In moral values there are also moral personality attitudes which include honesty, authentic values, the value of willingness to be responsible, moral independence, moral courage, and humility.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan siswa yang paling dominan dan mengetahui jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan pada semester IV Universitas Khairun. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan instrumen berupa tes. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas B semester IV Universitas Khairun yang berjumlah 15 orang. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif sebagai metode penelitian. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dari produk tulisan siswa kemudian data dianalisis dengan Surface Strategy Taxonomy. Peneliti mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis kesalahan dalam penggunaan simple present tense dalam menulis teks deskriptif yang dilakukan siswa, untuk mengetahui kesalahan mana yang paling dominan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa total kesalahan siswa adalah 85 kesalahan. Para siswa membuat kesalahan dalam kelalaian 25 (29.41%), 24 penambahan (28,23%), 6 kesalahan urutan (07,14%). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa kesalahan siswa yang paling dominan adalah kesalahan formasi sebanyak 30 item (35,51%).

Abstract

This research objective is to find out the students’ reading comprehension in reading English textbook at the English Language Education Study Program, University of Khairun. This research used qualitative method with descriptive statistical analysis. The sample of the research consisted of 30 students at the English Language Education Study Program, University of Khairun. The instrument was reading comprehension test to collect the data. The data were analyzed by interpreting the result of reading comprehension test. The result of this research shows that the score of reading comprehension in reading English textbook at The English Language Education Study Program, University of Khairun were categorized as poor with the average of (24.63). The highest score of students’ reading comprehension was poor (53) and the lowest score was also poor (7). Their abilities in Literal (L), Inferential (F), and Critical Creative (K) are also generally poor.

Abstract

The research objectives consist of (1) Increasing prewriting activity through words card at 3rd grade of SDNegeri Bajo and (2) Increasing students prewriting activities through word cards. There were 22 students became the respondents of this reearch and this research used quantitative and qualitative approach with classroom action research (CAR). The result of this research showed that there was significant difference between 1st cycle and 2nd cycle showed up that there were positive and negatively reacting respond by the students. In using word cards media showed that students were more enjoyable in learning process. Based on the research result of learning foundout that 7,1 % average. It is proved that card words media could improved students competence in learning prewriting in cycle one with categorize suficiently. While in the second cycle became 19 students passed attend their evaluation or 19 students of 20 students, thus the percentage reach 95 %. Based on the second cycle of the research, the researcher assumed that the students prewriting competence through word cards increase at  3rd grade of SDNegeri Bajo.
