Abstract

This article discusses the influence of the Sultanate of Aceh since 1868 on the traditional Karo leaders who ruled in the five sebayak or kingdoms of Sebayak Lingga, Suka, Barus Jahe, Sarinembah and Kuta Buluh. Aceh's influence extended to only four of the five kingdoms, with Kuta Buluh remaining independent. Aceh's influence was less profound among traditional Karo leaders and almost non-existent among the general population, as Acehnese Islamic traditions and religion were not adopted at that time. Dutch rule began to influence traditional Karo leaders in 1905, but it wasn't until 1908 that it became region-wide. Dutch influence was very strong, both on the leaders and the Karo people. The Dutch completely controlled the leaders in the Karo plains, who in turn applied their leadership to their subordinates, the Raja Urung who ruled the urung and the Penghulu who ruled the village. The Dutch also regulated the government system, changing the name of kesebayakan into Landschappen, and restructuring the number of urung. This research uses the historical method with an analytical descriptive approach to discuss the government system and social life during the influence of the Sultanate of Aceh and the Dutch in the Karo highlands.

Abstract

This study examines the application of railway technology in West Sumatra, focusing on the challenges and innovations during the colonial period. The research aims to explore the historical context, technical developments, and socio-economic impacts of the railway construction in this region. Using a historical method with a qualitative approach, the study analyzes primary sources such as colonial archives and technical reports, along with secondary sources like historical books and scholarly articles. The findings highlight the introduction of rack railway systems to navigate steep terrains, demonstrating Dutch colonial technical prowess. Additionally, the construction of the Ombilin coal mines and the associated railway network significantly boosted the local economy but also revealed the exploitation of labor. Overall, the study provides insights into the interplay between technology, colonialism, and local society, emphasizing the importance of geographical adaptation in infrastructure development.

Abstract

The history of economic policy development during the New Order era in Indonesia reflects the political and economic dynamics that shaped the nation's development trajectory. Initially, the New Order government adopted a centralized and authoritarian economic development model, emphasizing industrialization and modernization. While these programs spurred economic growth, they also led to social inequality and political tensions. The late 1990s currency crisis, particularly the 1997 Asian financial crisis, significantly destabilized Indonesia's economy. Economic policies of the New Order era, characterized by dependence on foreign debt and imprudent monetary practices, rendered Indonesia susceptible to global financial market fluctuations. The impact of the crisis was profound, manifesting in a sharp decline in economic growth, a currency crisis, and a banking crisis, which compelled the government to implement urgent economic reforms. These reforms included financial sector restructuring, economic deregulation, and enhanced transparency in public financial management. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the New Order's economic policies and the subsequent impact of the currency crisis on Indonesia's economy.

Abstract

Agrarian reform encompasses a series of government actions and policies designed to restructure the land system, aiming to enhance social justice, reduce land ownership inequality, increase agricultural productivity, and stimulate economic growth in the agricultural sector. These reforms typically involve transferring land from large owners to smaller farmers, improving the land ownership structure, and granting land to farmers. This study employs descriptive qualitative research. According to Lexi J. Moleong, qualitative research seeks to understand phenomena experienced by the subjects. Although agrarian reform in Indonesia began during Dutch colonialism, significant reforms were implemented during the Old Order and New Order eras, particularly through Law Number 5 of 1960, known as the Basic Agrarian Law (UUPA). This law established regulations related to agrarian principles during the Old Order period. The Old Order’s agrarian reform aimed to dismantle colonial capitalism and feudalism by nationalizing foreign companies and redistributing land. However, agrarian reform in Indonesia still faces numerous challenges that need to be addressed to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
