Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the difficulties of linguistic aspects in writing descriptive paragraph experienced by undergraduate students at English Education Program of UIJ. It used descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects were 20 students of English Education Program at second semester. They were instructed to write 100 – 150 words about descriptive paragraph entitled “A Description of My Village”. After investigating students’ writing product, the result of the research revealed that the students faced some difficulties in linguistic aspects. The most common difficulties of linguistic aspects made by the students were vocabulary problems (21,5%). Secondly, a cognitive problem was capitalization (20,5%), then fragments (16%) as a sentence structure problem, punctuation (14%) as a cognitive problem, spelling (6%) as a cognitive problem, preposition (5,5%) as a grammatical problem, word order and SVA (5%) as sentence structure problems. In addition, the follow-up interview supported these findings by indicating that most students was still assisted by looking up the dictionary in determining appropriate vocabularies. It was suggested that provide specific descriptions of linguistic aspects in writing skill be designed by the writing’s lecturers to improve students’ writing.

Abstract

This study employed Educational Research and Development (RnD). The employment was purposed to embody the appropriate instructional materials in form of textbook that focused on listening and speaking for Survival English (SE) program students at LKP Rafa’s English House (ROSE), Gumukmas. The research product named Fun Listening and Speaking 1 was designed based on the competence based syllabus of LKP ROSE, the finding data gathered through need analysis and Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL). Concerning to these, a set of procedures proposed by Borg and Gall are being applied in this study. The research instruments used to collect the data consisted of Course Syllabus, Focused Group Discussion (FGD), interview, questionnaires, and observation sheet and checklist validation forms. Expert validation was carried out to evaluate the textbook developed for the product betterment. Moreover, to know the applicability of the materials and students’ responses, the real tryout phase on some selected chapters during the research period had been conducted. For the reasons, the textbook on listening and speaking for SE program students is ready to be applied in teaching learning activity.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate student’s perception in writing skill through Edmodo Media at Second Grade of SMK Kesehatan TPA Jember. This research was categorized as mixed method.The design of this research was convergent parallel design; the purpose of a convergent mixed methods design is to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The research subjects in this research are second grade students which are consist of 66 students as population, 33 students are chosen to be a sample, but the researcher chooses 3 students that representative from any kind of students to make the research efficiently. The data of the study were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by interview, observation and documentation. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were acquired conducting through questionaries. The result of questionaries showed the students’ perception on writing skill through Edmodo have 75,1% students agree in Edmodo, it means that students have positive perception in learning writing through Edmodo.

Abstract

Writing is one of four language skills that should be mastered by students in learning English. Every student has different learning strategy in writing which help them to make their own learning effective. Motivation is one of the factors that influenced students’ learning strategies both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation had contributed in students’ learning strategies in writing skill. It can be seen from their writing achievement. This research aims to investigate the students’ learning strategies and students’ motivation towards writing achievement. The design was quantitative research. The research was applied to 35 Eleventh Science 3 grade in SMAN 1 Pakusari Jember. The data obtained from observation, interview, and documentation. The research found that students’ high learning strategies in writing and high intrinsic motivation influenced in their writing achievement.

Abstract

The development of education world not only supported by the factors of teaching such as teaching methods, learning process and others but also influenced by the factors which doesn’t related with the teaching process at the class that is evaluation of learning. The writer conducted observation in Eight grade at MTs Bustanul Ulum Kasiyan Timur. The objectives of this research are to describe the characteristics of the item of teacher made test for English subject for Eight grade in MTs Bustanul Ulum Kasiyan Timur – Puger in the 2014/2015 Academic Year on daily test 1, daily test 2 and daily test 3 which are include validity and reliability. Type of this research is descriptive research with analyzing the item of question, reviewed from its content validity based on the syllabus and reviewed from theirs face and construct validity based on the question made by teacher an reviewed its criterion-related validity based on the answer of the students at MTs Bustanul Ulum. Based on the data analysis which is done, so it can be concluded that on generally the item of the teacher made test on daily test 1, 2 and 3 has not fulfill the criteria of content validity. From face validity on daily tests 1, 2 and 3 the teacher using layout well. On construct validity, the teacher using different skill to make the question between daily test 1, 2 and 3. And from Criterion-related validity on daily tests 1, 2 and 3 has not fulfill standard of KKM. And for reliability has not reliable because on daily test 2 and 3 have low reliability.

Abstract

Discourse is language in context referring to language in action, while a text is written record of interaction or communicative event that brings together language, the individual producing the language and context within which language used.  So, this research aims to conduct discourse analysis of the student’s difficulties to practice self-directing learning in writing procedure text. The subjects of this research are the total students (25 students) of grade 9 MTS UnggulanNurul Islam Jember with 10 students as the samples of the data. The data collection was conducted by using a random sampling method. The data was categorized according to Donald Aryet all (2010, 8th edition). The approach of this research design was descriptive qualitative that used interactive and humanistic multiple methods to present the data gained from analyzing, observation, literature study, in-depth interviews and documentation study. From the research, it was found that the students did some faulty actions in understanding the description and orders from the teacher especially the language features of procedure text, vocabulary, grammatical and organizational error. Consequently, as the research objectives this eventually will give a positive contribution to the teacher to follow up the difficulties

Abstract

This research is limited to the students’ perspective toward the use of photovoice in the teaching and learning process. The objective of this study is to explore the perspective of students about the use of photovoice on the teaching and learning process in speaking class. The research use qualitative interview study with a descriptive design. The researchers collected the data by individual semi-structured interviews. The writter choose telephone inteview with current conditions (Covid 19). Data analysis used is thematic analysis by (Braun, Virginia & Clarke, 2006). Interview were transcribed verbatim to ensure data integrity by double-checking the transcripts with recorded interviews.The researh findings show 7 theme based on interview with students who describe their perspectives and experiences in learning photovoice. These themes are: 1) experiences, 2) social, 3) intellectual, 4) speaking, 5) emotion, 6) challanges and difficulties, and 7) future direction of photovoice

Abstract

This content analysis study aimed to identify speech act in Indonesian EFL Textbookentitled Think Globally Act Locallypublished by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MONEC) in 2018. The procedure of analyzing the data are, read and reread the textbook, identifying the forms of speech acts in EFL textbook, coding, the researcher classifying relevant data representing illocutionary, tabulating the frequency and percentage of each speech act, describing and interpreting the data in order to address the statement of problem.Drawing upon the Searle’s (1977) categories, I found 52 kinds of speech act categorized as Illocutionary act; representative, commissive, directive, expressive, and declarative. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that textbook representedvarious speech acts that could help learnersin their EFL learning.

Abstract

This research will examine students'' perspectives on learning public speaking using the YouTube software due to a exchange in mastering styles that at the start used traditional patterns to on-line studying styles because of the covid 19. In previous research, it was found the effectiveness of learning using video in this study, researchers will explore from the students'' point of view.Phenomenological research student''s perspective they feel that learning public speaking using the YouTube application makes it very easy for them or is very effective in learning public speaking.student''s perspective is very effective but the impact of pademic still leaves discomfort in learning but the existence of this application can be an alternative.

Abstract

Based on informal interview with the English teacher and preliminary study test of SMP Madrasah Tsanawiyah Miftahul Ulum Suco Lor had problem in speaking and it was shown by the average score of the preliminary test is 37% student get score more than 65. This study aimed to determine the learning process and the learning outcome of student’s speaking ability during the English conversation. The type of research is classroom action research (CAR). The Procedure used is the model cycle. Based on the results of the study, the percentage of students in the first cycle of activity individually obtained 58,5% and in the second cycle students’ activity individually obtained 95%. While the daily test results of students in the first cycle obtained average value 78,26% and 95,65% in the second cycle. It is proved that the learning process is a fan of student learning outcomes can be improved with the use of speech recognition application.
