The aims of this journal is to provide a venue for researchers, academicians and practitioners for publishing the original articles or review articles. The main focus of the journal is on language teaching and pedagogy work. We are particularly interested on Language and Teaching Methodologies, Pedagogical Techniques, Technology in Language Teaching, Technology in Language Teaching such as CALL and MALL and Curriculum Development and Material design. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics, Language and culture, cognition, and pragmatics and Theories and practice in related fields.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the benefits provided for the ownership of English test certificate (TKBI) for job seekers and employees in a job. The need for English test that is used at the level of education as a condition to complete the study is now starting to penetrate into recruitment requirements in the world of work. Therefore, the policy of English test becomes a condition of recruitment of workers in various agencies is currently the main topic. This study uses a qualitative case study research method with the design of participants from job seekers and employees as research objects. The object studied consisted of 5 people consisting of 2 job seekers and 3 employees from different agencies and for data collection sourced from observations, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the participants supported the many benefits obtained from the ownership of English test certificates, especially to support their careers in the world of work. But on the other hand, this study also found the conclusion that the policy to make the English test a condition of recruitment in various agencies is still not appropriate to apply and the application of the test must adjust to the needs of the relevant agencies.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic situation made the Government announce the learning activities into on-line learning. This research focused on the teachers’ strategies used in increasing students’ motivation in english on-line learning classes. This study aimed at answering the following research questions: (1) what are the teachers’ strategies in increasing students’ motivation in english on-line learning at UPT SMK Negeri 1 Parepare? (2) To what extent do the strategies help the teachers in English on-line classes? This type of research was field research with qualitative approach. The results showed that (1) There were several strategies used by English teachers in increasing student motivation in learning English online. The strategies include: using news text, using dialogue text, doing personal approach, giving students the praise/reward, and make a video. (2) Strategies in teaching through on-line learning classes during the COVID-19 pandemic greatly assisted teachers in the increasing motivation students in teaching and learning process to achieve learning goals.

Abstract

This study aim to train students' vocabulary abilities using scrabble. Based on the data from the observations of the researcher through the student's vocabulary knowledge test, the students' ability was still classified as low before got treatment. This is caused by the teacher's media which makes students less interested in the English learning process. So the researchers tried to improve students' vocabulary skills by using the Scrabble game in seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design. The population was 60 students consisting of 30 students each class at SMPN 3 Parepare. Class VII.5 as the experimental class and class VII.4 as the control class. Researcher using random sampling in took sampling in this research. Then the researchers used the pre-test and post-test for data collection. The results of the data analysis showed that the students' vocabulary knowledge skills increased in the learning process using the Scrabble game. This is indicated by the difference between the students' mean score in the experimental class in the pre-test (54.08) post-test (77.78) and the control class in the pre-test (47.31) post-test (62.3) while the value difference distance is 23.7 for the experimental class and 14.99 for the control class. So, this means that the vocabulary skills of seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Parepare have a significant increase. In conclusion, the use of scrabble in training the vocabulary skills of students at SMPN 3 Parepare for the 2020/2021 school year.

Abstract

Picture is kind of interesting visual aid which is able to give motivation and good impression for the students, so that the students can memorize the words related to the picture. Because of that, it is important to find out the solution to enhance students’ vocabulary. The objective of the research are to find out whether the use of picture series is able to enhance the vocabulary of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare. This research used quasi-experimental design with two groups namely pre-test and post-test. The population of this research were the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Parepare Gasal semester in Academic 2018/2019 with sample taking technique which was clustering random sampling consisted of 54 students from two classes taken from the eighth grade population, where class VIII.7 was an experimental class and VIII.9 as a control class. The results showed that the learning process using picture series could improve students' vocabulary skills, based on the results of research in chapter IV it was known that the average score of learning outcomes before applied picture series of a pre-test (66.70) of the standard score of DEPDIKNAS 2015 with Learning outcomes category is in the low category. After applying picture series, the researcher obtained the results of the average score of students in the post-test, namely (86.62). Based on data analysis through the test formula shows the final t-test (3,632) is higher than the value of t-table (2,000). This showed that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, students who are taught to use picture series are more effective than conventional way.

Abstract

This research explores the idea of using an already existing language learning app, Duolingo, to students at SMPN 8 parepare. These types of apps use adaptive learning technologies, which are able to tailor the tasks to the level of each student. In the case of this research, Duolingo was used as part of the media of studies in teaching EFL. The students used the app online, either in its android phone or IOS phone. The purpose of this research is to find out the use of Duolingo Gamification is able to influence the EFL students in learning EFL or not and to analyze the significant difference between the EFL learner’s mastery in English language before and after being taught by using Duolingo Gamification. The researcher applied quasi-experimental method, with two group pre-test and post-test design. The samples of this research consisted of 42 students from two classes taken from the population of the eight grade students of SMPN 8 Parepare. Preliminary results shows that Duolingo Gamification is an easy-to-use app that is useful and has potential, although its main lessons are not based on communicative competence. It is enjoy learning process and can motivate the students because of several elements, such as the accessibility on a mobile device, its Gamification aspect, and the variety of tasks. The results of data analysis showed that there was significant difference between the EFL learner mastery in English language before and after being taught by using Duolingo Gamification. This is indicated by the mean score of the pre-test is 35.85 and the post-test is 66.42. The results of the data show the t-test value in the post-test is 5.751 and the t-table value is 2.021. The data shows that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected and students who are taught through Gamification Duolingo media are better than students who are taught through the Picture media.

Abstract

One of the four English skills which were not taught well at Vocational High School was writing, the students were difficult to write. Based on the researcher’s observation, there were many students who have difficulties in writing. It was proved by the students’ writing score was in fair classification. There were several problems faced by students such as students’ writing was not comprehensible and there were still many errors in vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Therefore, the researcher intended to help students to overcome their writing difficulties by using story pyramid strategy. This was a good strategy help students to organize their idea or plans before they write a complete paragraph. The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of story pyramid strategy can improve the writing ability of the tenth year students of SMKN 3 Parepare. The researcher applied quasi-experimental design with two group pre-test and post-test design. There were two variables; they were independent variable and dependent variable. The samples of the research consisted of 62 students from two classes taken from population of the tenth year students of SMKN 3 Parepare. Class X MM 2 as experimental class and X TKJ 2 as control class. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ writing ability improved significantly. It was showed by the mean score of pre-test was 53.16 and the post-test was 77.03 It showed that the use of story pyramid strategy could improve the students’ writing ability of the tenth year students of SMKN 3 Parepare. Beside the different score of pre-test and post-test, the mean score of the students in post-test was higher than the Criteria of Completeness Maximum (75) in SMKN 3 Parepare. After analyzing the data by using SPSS version 21, the result showed the level of significance (0.05) was higher than t-test result (0.000). Those indicated that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected.

Abstract

This research was conducted to obtain the learning style that commonly apllied in Speaking Subjects by students of English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. This research also conducted to obtain the importance of knowing learning styles that apllied in Speaking Subjects of English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare based on students’ perception. This research used Qualitative Descriptive by design conducted with students. The population of this research is English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The respondents of this research consist of six respondents. In addition, the researcher conducted interview and questionnaire to obtained the data. The result of this research showed that the kind of learning style that commonly apllied in speaking subjects by students are kinesthetic and auditory based on the result of interview and questionnaire. Learning style kinesthetic was the highest score based on the result of questionnaire, the second was auditory, the third was read/write, and the lowest score was visual. Besides, the result of this research also showed that students’ perception toward the importance of knowing learning style especially in speaking subjects stated that learning style is one of the important things to know and understand by students because it plays an important role in learning process for students themselves.
