Abstract

This research was done to test the effect of rpm on the effective capacity of the equipment, percentage of material left in the equipment, and yield. This research was using non factorial completely randomized design. It was found that the work capacity of the equipment, percentage of material left in the equipment, and yield on 1125 rpm are 83,128, 12,17%, and 87,83% kg/hr respectively. On 900 rpm are 75.650, 19,33%, and 80,33% kg/hr respectively. On 750 rpm are 70,484, 25%, and 75% kg/hr respectively. The results showed  that number of knife edge had significant effect on percentage of material left in the equipment, and yield and had significant different on the work capacity. The main cost from year one to year seven were Rp. 143,52, Rp. 134,90, Rp. 132,04, Rp. 130,61, Rp. 129,76, Rp. 129,31, and Rp. 128,78 per kg respectively. Break even point from year one to year seven were 1552,55, 835,26, 596,50, 477,32, 405,96, 368,42, 324,75 kg respectively. The result of net present value from 6% of bank rate was Rp. 1.518.446.869,44 which means this business was competent. The internal rate of return was 35,6% which means this business was competent if the bank rate were not more than 35,6%. Keywords : rpm, grater, desiccated coconut

Abstract

The production process that includes pre-harvest until postharvest requires the support of various effective facilities and infrastructure, development equipments and agricultural machinery is among the way of increasing agricultural production. To support this we need a mechanical onion peeler driven by electricity. The study was conducted by literature study and observation on the onion peeler, and then to design the coupling components of the  mechanical onion peeler. The effective capacity of the tool was 14.15 kg / hr. The value of the effective capacity of the tool is larger than the onion peeler driven by human power. Basic costs to be incurred in peeling onions with this tool was Rp. 751,904/kg in the 1st year, Rp.647,531/kg in the 2nd year, Rp. 624,771/kg in the 3rd year, Rp. 613,441/kg in the 4th year, and Rp. 606,609/kg in the 5th year. This tool will reach the break even point when the value has peeling corn amounted to 8624,85 kg/year. Net present value of these tools with an interest rate of 6% Rp. 14.553.501,5 whichmeant that the business was feasible to run. The internalrate of return was 40,93%.   Keywords: design equpments, mechanical peeler, onion.

Abstract

Drying is an important activity in pickling food presentation, as well as in agriculture product industry. The easiest and cheapest way to do drying is with sun light or sundrying. To overcome the sunlight limitation, a sunlight fish drying was had to guarantee the fish higenity. This research was aimed to test moisture content of pora-pora fish using fish dryer machine (cabinet type) and calculated the organoleptic value of the result.  This research had been conducted at agriculture engineering laboratory, faculty of agriculture USU in December 2014 until March 2015 using pora-pora fish. Parameters observed were moisture content and organoleptic test. The result of this research showed that the best moisture content was 29,17%, the best appearance 7,13 and the smell was 7,0. Keywords: Dryer fish machine (cabinet type), pora-pora fish

Abstract

Coconut plant is a plant of life, because all its parts can be utilized to meet human needs. One of the utilization is grated coconut that can to be used in making bread, biscuits, sweets, its milk and coconut flour. This study was aimed to examine the effect of the number of rod in manufacturing of desiccated coconut on the performance of the grated coconut dryer. This research was conducted in March and May 2015 in the Laboratory of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, by literature study, testing equipment and parameters observation. Parameters measured were moisture content, percentage of materials left in the appliance, yield and organoleptic tests. The results showed that the number of rod was not significantly affected the water content, yield and organoleptic tests and significantly affected to the percentage of material left in the appliance. Abstract

The dependence of people consume rice is not followed by the increase of rice production. Therefore on, alternative foodstuffs is needed such as cassava which can be processed into gaplek, and cassava flour. This research was done in Agriculture Engineering Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, and Food Science and Technology Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture in Oktober 2014 until March 2015 using non factorial completely design with tray holes diameter of (D1) 3 mm, (D2) 5 mm, and (D3) 7 mm. The parameters analysed were processing capacity, moisture content, yield, and brightness level. The results, showed that, the best drying cassava is produced by (D2) 5 mm. Abstract

Chopping is one way of size reduction of solids into smaller pieces to produce solids of a certain size. Chopping with a mechanical equipment has not much been done due to lack of knowledge and limitation of existing equipment of the farmers. In fact, if it can be done can increase farmers' income. The aim of the research was to test the performance of oil palm fronds chopper machine designed by Agricultural Mechanization Unit in North Sumatra Province using oil palm fronds as a raw material and analyze its operating costs. Observed parameters were effective capacity, yield of chopping, the percentage of materials left behind, and fuel consumption of the equipment. The results showed that the effective capacity of the equipment was 287,29Kg/hour. Chopping yield was 94,2%. The percentage of materials left behind was 5,2%. Fuel consumption was 0,44 L/hour. Cost of Analysis was Rp. 53,9/Kg for the first year, Rp. 54,29/Kg for the second year, Rp. 54,48/Kg for the third year, Rp.54,79/Kg for the fourth year, and Rp. 55,12/Kg for the fifth year. BEP was 62.209 Kg in the first year, 65.862 Kg in the second year, 67.759 Kg in the third year, 70.755 Kg in the fourth year and 73.947 Kg in the fifth year. The IRR was 39,17%. Abstract

Knowing water distribution in soil is important as one of the reason for irrigation. This research was purposed to study water distribution in Inceptisol soil planted with soybean at 100%, 80%, 60% field capacity and its effect on soybean plant’s production. The parameters observed were the characteristic of the soil physics, field capacity, evapotranspiration, water distribution, dry weight of soybean plant and pods weight. The results showed that Inceptisol soil had sandy clay loam texture. The highest porosity was found at 6-10 cm depth i.e. 63,06%. The lowest porosity was found at 0-5cm depth i.e. 54,23%. Water field capacity was 47,7%(dry basis). Soybean plant evapotranspiration at middle growth phase was 1,97 mm/day and the last growth phase was 1,58 mm/day. The highest water level was found at 6-10 cm depth i.e. 20,58-32,49% (dry basis). The lowest water level was found at  0-5 cm depth i.e. 20,34-26,63% (dry basis). The dry weight of soybean plant at the middle growth phase at 100% field capacity was 16,51 g, at the last growth phase was 14,89 g and pods weight was 13,20 g. The dry weight of soybean plant at the middle growth phase at 80% field capacity was 14,23 g, at the last growth phase was 11,77g and pods weight was 10,78 g. The dry weight of soybean plant at the middle growth phase at 60% field capacity was 13,12 g, at the last growth phase was 10,97 g and pods weight was 8,76g.
