Abstract

In acommunication, people usuallyconveyan ideathroughlanguage. The relationshipbetweenaspeakerand ahearercan be reflectedin the useof language. One thingthatcandeterminethe relationshipbetweenspeakerandheareris an address forms. The use of address formsareboundby the local customs, manners, andcircumstances during conversation. Inthis study, Ilearnaddress formsin Javanese. Javanese people recognize certain codes for expressing politeness and respect. The speakers of Javanese language have special terms of address which they use when they talk to other people. It isclosely related to thesocialvaluesanddecencyinJavanesesociety.The purposes of this study are to know the actual use of addressing system of Javanese kinship terms by the society in daily conversations and to find out the factors that influence the use of address form in kinship terms of Javanese.The data used are the utterances from Javanese people that contain Javanese address forms in daily conversation. I use primary data because the data sources of this research come from the daily conversation of Javanese people in Semarang. The population of this research is all Javanese people living in Semarang. I use purposive random sampling technique. It means that, in deciding the samples that will be used, I have some criteria. The criteria are they are all Javanese people and they live in Semarang (Banyumanik, Tlogosari, Pasadena). They are twenty nine people and I divide them into six groups.       The result of this study are the use of Javanese address form has been shifted. Javanese address forms relating to kinship terms have been used not only for the member of family but also for other people who do not have kinship terms or even strangers. Javanese address form also has been improved. There are some Javanese address forms are no longer used because its inferiority connotation meaning. Today, Javanese people tend to address mother as Ibu than Mak or Mbok, the elder sister as Mbak or Kak than Mbakyu, and uncle as Om than Paklik or Lik. Intimacy, solidarity, politeness, and power are the key factors that influence the use of address forms.Keywords: address forms, kinship terms, context

Abstract

People often realize that they need to search the meaning of their life. The main character in the novel Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie, Morrie, exemplifies the process of this searching the meaning of life. This study is designed for analyzing how Morrie searches the meaning in life and how this process also influences the supporting character, Mitch, who tries to grasp the meaning in his life. The methods used in this study are library research and psychological approach that relate to the extrinsic analysis. This study uses Viktor Frankl’s existentialism that concentrates on the three pathways in discovering the meaning to analyze the extrinsic aspect of this novel. The analysis shows that Morrie and Mitch successfully find their meaning of life by creating something; experiencing something or encountering people; and taking the attitude toward unavoidable suffering. The good deed they make together is by creating their last project which gives advantages not only for both of them but also for people around them. Experiencing something or encountering people gives both of them a deep understanding about the importance of love and human’s relationship rather than the importance of having materialistic things. Suffering helps both of them to accept everything in their life sincerely. Those efforts successfully change their perception of life to be a better perception that brings them into a better future of life.

Abstract

Racism has existed in American society for many years, especially in Alexandria, Virginia. There is segregation between blacks and whites there. However, a federal mandate to integrate the two schools into one, TC Williams. Herman Boone is the new head coach at T.C. Williams, who wanted to bring together all the players, black and white.The purpose of this paper is to describe the intrinsic aspect, get an overview of the anti-racism of Herman Boone, and analyze the social impact in Alexandria. Researcher obtains data by watching Remember the Titans as the primary data. Secondary data derives from theories related to anti-racism, motives, attitudes, social influence, and social nature. Finally, the researcher could see a big impact in the community of Herman Boone attitude that spreads through football.This study suggests that anti-racism attitude of Herman Boone can affect people in Alexandria. Boone changed the mindset of the people slowly. First, Boone changes the mindset of his football team and makes the team as a solid team. Second, with remarkable achievements earned his team, Boone changes people's mindsets through eufouria os his team’s victory. His anti-racism Boone is also influenced by motives that arise due to the influence of the social characteristics of North Carolina society, where Boone lived before he and his family moved to Alexandria.

Abstract

Sebuah seri terbaik karya Sir Arthur Conan Doyle yang berjudul The Final Problem merupakan satu dari beberapa seri The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Novel ini menceritakan tentang Sherlock Holmes, seorang detektif fiksi yang diciptakan oleh Doyle sebagai tokoh utama sekaligus tokoh aplikasi bagi ilmu deduktif yang merupakan ilmu yang dipelajari oleh Doyle selama hidupnya.Tujuan penulisan tugas akhir ini adalah untuk mengungkap tema utama secara umum dan mendeskripsikan kelebihan serta kelemahan novel The Final Problem secara khusus. Dalam pembahasan project ini, penulis menggunakan metode penelitian perpustakaan dan internet untuk menganalisis plot serta memaparkan beberapa kelebihan dan kelemahan yang dimiliki novel The Final Problem. Berdasarkan hasil seluruh analisis, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa novel The Final Problem lebih unik dari 7 seri terbaik Doyle dikarenakan penggunaan metode deduksi yang lebih banyak. Metode deduksi digunakan oleh para lulusan akademi kedokteran yang merupakan tempat Doyle pernah mengenyam pendidikan dan mengabdikan beberapa tahun hidupnya.

Abstract

American dream adalah sebuah konsep yang meyakini bahwa kesuksesan berawal dari suatu kerja keras. Istilah ini biasanya mengacu pada kesuksesan finansial, kecukupan materi dan ketenaran. Sejarah dari American dream sendiri dapat ditelusuri melalui sejarah dari Negara Amerika Serikat, sejak dari jaman Puritan. Orang-orang dari berbagai belahan dunia datang ke Amerika Serikat dengan satu mimpi yang sama, yaitu American dream. American dream juga menginspirasi banyak penulis novel dalam membuat karya mereka, seperti misalnya Michael Gates Gill dengan karyanya yang berjudul How Starbucks Saved My Life. Novel How Starbucks Saved My Life diciptakan sekitar tahun 2007, berkisah tentang kehidupan pribadinya sendiri sebagai seorang pengusaha periklanan terkenal dan terbesar di Amerika yang telah mencapai puncak kesuksesannya, namun kemudian ‘jatuh’ secara tiba-tiba dan harus mengalami keterpurukan dalam segala aspek kehidupannya.Extended essay ini mengulas tentang American dream yang diangkat dari novel How Starbucks Saved My Life karya Michael Gates Gill. Dalam membuat extended essay ini, penulis menggunakan metode penelitian kepustakaan. Penelitian kepustakaan yang digunakan adalah pengambilan sumber dari buku-buku terkait di perpustakaan dan berbagai sumber lainnya  melalui internet. Extended essay ini menggunakan pendekatan ekspresif karena pendekatan tersebut merupakan pendekatan yang paling cocok digunakan untuk mempelajari kisah hidup pengarangnya melalui bukunya. Extended essay ini fokus pada analisis American dream yang dicapai dalam fase-fase hidup tokoh utamanya, yaitu Michael Gates Gill. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa Gill, yang walaupun ia adalah seorang kulit putih, tetapi ia juga melakukan banyak perjuangan dan pengorbanan untuk dapat bangkit kembali dari keterpurukan yang dialami dan menggapai mimpinya, American dream. Elemen – elemen American Dream yang direpresentasikan dalam novel ini adalah Life, Liberty (Equal Opportunity), dan Pursuit of Happiness.

Abstract

Dalam makalah ini, penulis menganalisis perbedaan-perbedaan antara dua pahlawan super yang terkenal; Batman dan Ironman. Penulis memilih film Batman Begins dan film Ironman sebagai obyek dari penelitian karena di kedua film tersebut menceritakan tentang bagaimana kedua pahlawan super itu yang awalnya hanya manusia biasa namun bisa menjadi pahlawan super mengandalkan kepintaran dan kekayaan mereka untuk menciptakan peralatan canggih. Fokus dari thesis skripsi ini adalah perbedaan kepribadian yang dimiliki Batman dan Ironman; meskipun mereka sangat mirip dalam banyak hal. Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini adalah untuk mencari perbedaan-perbedaan kepribadian yang dimiliki oleh Batman dan Ironman dan kemudian menggolongkannya. Penelitian kepustakaan digunakan dalam pembuatan thesis ini. Penulis menggunakan teori 4 (empat) kepribadian oleh Florence Littauer untuk mengkaji data-data yang didapatkan penulis. Penulis membatasi pembahasan masalah hanya pada membandingkan dan mengklasifikasikan kepribadian antara Batman dan Ironman dalam film Batman Begins dan Ironman. Hasil dari analisis berdasarkan teori 4 (empat) kepribadian yang dikemukakan oleh Florence Littauer adalah bahwa Batman memiliki kepribadian melankolis berdasarkan sifat analitis, berhati-hati, pintar, tidak suka dipuji, disiplin, serius, pendiam, penyendiri, memiliki empati yang besar terhadap kesengsaraan manusia, dan terkadang menjauh dari pergaulan sosial, perfeksionis, dan keren. Sebaliknya, kepribadian Ironman banyak yang bertolak belakang dari Batman, kepribadian Ironman adalah Sanguin; terkenal, gemar berbicara, tapi tidak suka mendengarkan, antusias, ekspresif, bahagia, kekanak-kanakan, penasaran, arogan, humoris, tidak disiplin, mudah bergaul, kreatif dan inovatif, berpikiran sederhana, optimis, suka dipuji, suka menjadi pusat perhatian, spontan, dan emosional.

Abstract

Carol Ann Duffy “Medusa” is a poem which emphasizes the human’s emotion, jealousy. The objectives of this thesis are to show the jealousy in the poem through intrinsic elements, also to explain the jealousy and its effect towards human’s psyche. This thesis uses library research as the method of collecting data. To analyze the extrinsic elements of the poem, this thesis uses mythological and psychological approach in order to understand further about the symbolism and concepts of jealousy. The result of this thesis is that jealousy can cause an adverse change to one’s nature and behavior, emerge an extreme hatred, and lead one into her/his self downfall. It can be concluded that jealousy is an emotion which has negative effects towards human’s psyche.

Abstract

Language in advertising has so many variations. One of them is hyperbolic style. Hyperbole is frequently used in beauty products, for example in perfume. From this case the writer is interested in the hyperbolic expression which occurs in perfume advertisement and she wants to do research which is concerned with the topic. There are two main research questions regarding hyperbolic expression in online perfume advertisement, which are what kind of hyperbolic forms that occur in online perfume advertisement and why the advertiser uses hyperbolic utterances in perfume advertisement. The data are language expressions in the form of words, phrases, and sentences in perfume advertisement. The writer used two main methods in analyzing data. The methods are identity and distributional method. The result of this study shows that perfume advertisements use hyperbolic style in delivering their message. The most common hyperbolic form in online perfume advertisements is single word form. The purpose of using hyperbolic style is to make the advertisement more attractive, therefore the customers will have high interest in buying the products.

Abstract

            In this paper, the writer is interested to analyze colonialism in William Somerset Maugham’s The Painted Veil. The purposes of the thesis are to analyze how the British colonization works during the cholera epidemic in China, to analyze how the response of China society about British colonization, and to analyze the perspective of the Western toward the Eastern which is implied in The Painted Veil.            In doing this research, the writer uses method of library research. The object of the thesis is William Somerset Maugham’s The Painted Veil and the supporting data are  any information related to the analysis of the object which are taken from the library or internet. The writer also uses postcolonial approach to help explain the issues in The Painted Veil. To investigate the issues, the writer uses colonialism theory by Ania Loomba.            The results of the thesis is that British colonialism in China has three purposes. Those are: gold which is related to the economy domination, gospel or christianization, and glory which is related to domination of a nation. The colonialism results in positive and negative response from the Chinese. There is also the view from the Western toward the Eastern. The negative views from the West are stereotypes on how the West looks at the East. The Western thinks that their culture, appearance, manner, belief, and education are better than the Eastern. There is a line boundary between the West and the East. The line boundary makes a nation is different from the other.

Abstract

Abstract, The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee. The writer intends to describe the mental state which the narrator endures upon Annabel Lee’s death. The writer discusses figurative language, namely symbol and irony, to describe the mental state in the poem. The writer adopts Sigmund Freud’s theory of levels of mental life and id ego superego, and John lee’s theory of obesessive love to describe the mental state. The methods of her intrinsic and the extrinsic discussion are applied through book observation, library research, and the internet browsing. The result shows that in a love relationship there are two kinds of moments, happy and sad one. This final academic paper shows that the death of the beloved one greatly affects the narrator’s life; he loses his self control and becomes deppressed.
