Abstract

Glaukom merupakan salah satu dari lima penyebab utama kebutaan di Indonesia. Timolol merupaltan obat glaukom yang belum lama dipergunakan di Yogyakarta. Timolol tergolong betablocker yang dapat menurunkan tekanan bola mata dengan cara menghambat produksi humor aquosa pada corpus ciliare.Telah dilakukan percobaan pada orang normal kelompok muda berumur antara 10-20 tahun, kelompok normal lanjut usia berumur 40 60 tahun, clan kelompok penderita glaukom primer. Pada ketiga kelompok tersebut diberi tetesan maleat timolol 0,5%. Terjadi penurunan tekanan bola mata yang jelas setelah satu jam. Dua jam setelah tetesan masih terjadi penurunan tekanan bola mata yang nyata pada kelompok normal muda usia dan kelompok penderita glaukom primer. Dengan perhitungan statistik penurunan tersebut ternyata bermakna.Key Words: timolol maleate - beta blocker drugs - glaucoma - intraocular pressure - tonometer

Abstract

Since the beginning of the Landsteiner era, genetics has been developing tremendously. Genetics now is used in genetic counselling, genetic screening and in the management of genetic disorders or diseases due to the fast technological development during the last two decades.Amniocentesis, one of the products of this technological development, is indeed valuable, as it can detect any chromosomal abnormality of the fetus in utero, thus genetic defects among babies, can be prevented.By taking 10-20 ml of amniotic fluid during 14-16 weeks of gestation by amniocen tesis, disposed fetal cells in the fluid can be immediately cultured. After 2-3 weeks, chromosomal analysis can be undertaken to make its karyotype. Other than the above benefit, amniocentesis can also be used for detection of any biochemical abnormality of the fetus, thus early prevention of biochemical disorders among babies can be done.With the application of amniocentesis as one of the diagnostic tools which continuously improves, its benefits help human beings in the prevention of birth defects and in counselling couples who are expecting healthy babies in their marriage.To extend the beneficial aspect of amniocentesis to grass-root level, improvement of knowledge and skills of amniocentesis of practicians is mandatory.Key Words: amniocentesis - amniotic cell culture - chromosomal analysis - genetic counselling -prevention of birth defects

Abstract

Drug use in pregnancy should consider two main things, the first is its indication to the mother and the second, the more important, is its potential side-effect to the fetus. The aim of this paper is to review the possibility of side-effects of drugs commonly used during pregnancy, labor and delivery.Side-effects of drugs to the fetus are classified into three catagories namely1. embryotoxic effect,2. teratogenic effect and 3. minor side-effect.Embryotoxic effect is the most severe side-effect causing CO the death of the conceptus which usually terminates in early abortion. Teratogenic effect is an effect that causes major congenital anomalies. This effect happens if certain drugs are taken during the phase of organogenesis, i. e. between the third and the eighth week after conception. The minor side-effect may occur if some potential drugs are taken during the fetal period, i. e. during the phase of cellular hypertrophia or after the second month of pregnancy.Based on the teratogenic property of drugs, they can be classified into three major divisions:1. known teratogens such as thalidomide, anticancer drugs, certain hormones, sodium valproate and isotretionine,2. probable teratogens such as anticonvulsant, tobacco, alcohol, lithium, warfarin, and3. possible teratogens such as barbiturate, sulphonamide, certain an timalarials, oral an ndiabetics, LSD, certain antibiotics and some vaccines.The severity of anomalies in the fetus depends on the type of drugs, dosage, phase of fetal development, and species sensitivity. The general rule is all potential teratogenic drugs should be avoided during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Drugswith certain teratogenic effect should absolutely not be used during pregnancy, in spite of its indication.Key Words: drugs - pregnancy - teratogens - embryo toxic effects - congenital malformation

Abstract

Studies on the spectrum of insecticidal activities of any entomopathogens indigenously obtained from any mosquito larval habitats should be accomplished to realize its recpective degree of potency and specificity as a biological control agent.These studies aimed at testing of comparative toxicides of four bacilli isolates: B. sphaericus I (23A), B. sphaericus11 (51C), B. pumilus (25C) and B. cereus (142A) against Cul= quingu.efasciatus, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles aconitus larvae in laboratory conditions.Pathogenicity and toxicity testings were undertaken after the four bacilli isolates and their controls (B. thuringiensis H-14 and B. sphaericus 1593) being cultured in slant media or produced through fermentations with a defined medium (Prof Sam Singer) as final whole cultures (FWCs) and primary powders. Titrations of all primary powders produced were carried out against standard powders of B. t. H-14 (IPS 82) and B. sphaericus 1593 (RB 80).The results of the testings showed that:1. the four bacilli isolates were respectively pathogenic for Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. aconitus larvae;2. the degree of sensitivities of the three species of mosquito larvae against the four bacilli isolates from higher to lower levels were Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. am-nibs;3. toxicides of the four bacilli isolates were still much lower than that of either B. t. H-14 or B. sphaericus 1593, and4. results of the attempts of primary powder production with a Sam Singers medium for the four isolates, B. I.
