Abstract

The objectives of this study are to provide an account of the well-established common histological characteristic of the subfornical organ, an overview of the controversial issues regarding its structure, and to point out the histological organization which is still unclear. This histochemistry study involving the light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The albino rats which did not receive any treatment were stained with several types of staining techniques for light microscopy, i.e. hematozylin-eosin, toluidin-blue, methylene-blue, the Russells acid-phosphotungstic-hematozylin, Bodians protargol, Weils hematozylin & ferriamonium-sulphate, and the Gomoris chrome-alum-hematozylin phlozine methods. This study was carried out in the Department of Histology, Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta by using 85 albino rats of the LMR (Lembaga Makanan Rakyat, Jakarta) strain. For transmission electron microscopy 19 albino rats were used: 10 adult albino rats of the LMR strain were done in LAKFIP UGM, Yogyakarta; five adult albino rats of the Wistar strain were done in Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand; and four adult albino rats of the Wistar strain were done in First ...Key Words: subcomical organ - albino rat - neuron - neuroglia - ultra structures of blood capillaries

Abstract

Patients with stroke, particularly during the hours following the acute episode, are in evolution, undergo various stages of pathophysiological readjustment. The brain lesion plays an important role in this process. In addition to affecting the central nervous system function, it keeps a close pathophysiological relationship with the respiratory system, the circulatory system, and all systems that participate in keeping the internal milieu in balance. These systems are often altered secondary to the brain lesion, but in other cases they are directly or indirectly responsible for the brain lesion or are worsening. The pathophysiological interrelation in all seriously ill or potentially seriously ill patients is of great importance, and of course, the same is true in stroke patient. Hence management is required that the treatment should be integrated and not divided by systems or according to the various medical specialties. The importance of comprehensive rehabilitation for the stroke patients with complex physical, psychic and social problems should be underlined. Medical, social, psychological and vocational measures must start early. They must be coordinated and usually applied more or less simultaneously.Key Words: stroke- internal milieu-medical specialty-management of treatment- comprehensive rehabilitation

Abstract

The incidence of malignant melanoma (MM) varies in several countries. The differences include sex, age, and location. It is suggested, therefore, that there is an association between incidence of MM and pigmented nevi (PN) based on sex, age, and its location in the population.A restrospective study has been carried out at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital and Department of Anatomical Pathology, Faculty of Medicine Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta from January 1986 to December 1989 to determine the frequency, sex, age, and its location. The incidence of MM and PN were analysed by, sex, age, location, and the possible association. The study found that the incidence of MM and PN in male and female were 1:1,5 and 1:3,4 respectively. The peak of age in female were at the age of 45-49 and 55-59 year, however, in male the peak of incidence was at the age of 45-49 group. Male and female has similar localisation of incidence. Females have more frequent lesion on the lower extremities (25%), and equal number on the head and neck, mink and upper extremities compared to males. In both sexes, PN was mosty found on the head and neck (male 76.5%, and female 75.7%).Key Words: pigmented nevi-malignant melanoma -sex ratio-sun exposure-aging

Abstract

To detennine whether non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients with microalbuminuria have significant abnormality in lipid profile which could result in increasing the cardiovascular risk, a cross sectional study had been conducted by matching in-patient and out-patient of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta between October 1990 to May 1992.NIDDM patients with urinary albumin excretion rates (UAER) of 30 to 300 mg per 24 hours (microalbuminuria, incipient nephropathy) were matched for age and sex with NIDDM patients with UAER below 30 mg per 24 hours (control group). Venous blood samples were taken to determine blood sugar, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Sex. age. duration of diabetes, relative body weight, retinopathy and neuropathy were also determined.Four groups of 34 NIDDM with microalbuminuria (17 males and 17 females) were found, and 34 controls (17 males and 17 females) were studied. There were no significant difference in age, duration of diabetes, relative body weight and neuropathy. However, retinopathy was significantly higher in diabetic patient with microalbuminuria. No significant difference was found in LDL-cholesterol (122,58 ± 59,09 mg/di vs. 113,55 ± 42,25 mg/di, p = 0,24) and triglyceride (173.91 ± 89.06 mg/dl vs. 164.69 ± 69.69 mg/di, p = 0.31), fasting blood sugar (202.55 ± 87.01 mg/dl vs. 23061 ± 111.93 mg/dl, p = 0.13) and 2 hours after meal (253.91 + 89.46 mg/di vs. 284.38 + 114.40 mg/di, p = 0.11) in both groups. However HDL-cholesterol levels (35.94 ± 13.65 mg/dl vs. 4.3 ± 12.32 mg/di, p = 0.01) was significantly lower and the ratio of total cholesteroVHDL-cholesterol (6.31 ± 3.08 vs. 4.1 ± 1.13, p = 0.00017) was significantly higher in NIDDM patients with microalbuminuria compared to the control group...Key Words: diabetes mellitus - lipid profile - cholesterol - HDL cholesterol - cardiovascular risk factors

Abstract

Fibrocystic change is a benign breast lesion commonly found in women. In the past this lesion was regarded as having a high potential malignancy. By using Pages classification, Dupont and Page histologically proof that most of fibrocystic lesions (69,7%) have equal risk for malignancy with normal women population. Only 4% of the benign breast lesion have high risk to become breast carcinoma. The study of Dupont and Page has changed the terminology and point of view regarding malignant potency of the fibrocystic lesion of the breast. In the future pathologists are recommended to apply Pages classification in order to treat the patient with fibrocystic lesion more properly.Key words: fibrocystic change-carcinoma in situ of the breast-Pages classification-a typical hyperplasia-breast cancer

Abstract

There is still a controversial vision about the appropriate time to carry out myringotomy or tympanoplasty-1 on chronic otitis media. Some experts agree that the most appropriate time is two or three months after dry tympanic cavity (Classical method). Other experts state that it is not necessary to wait too long, even though there is still mucoid discharge, surgery can be directly caned out (Early method). The myringoplasty and tyrnpanoplasty-I was carried out on 72 cases of active chronic otitis media, of which 43 cases using Classical method and the rest of 29 cases using Early method. The criteria of successful myringoplasty and tympanoplasty-1 surgery was a positive graft take and followed by improvement of hearing. The successful result of myringoplasty and tympanoplasty-I with Classical method was 93.02 % and with Early method was 89.65%. The statistical analysis showed that there is no significant difference in the succesful of the myringoplasty and tymphanoplasty-I surgery, between the Classical and Early method.Key Words: myringoplasty tympanoplasty-I chronic suppurative otitis media classical method early method.
