Abstract

This article examines the fatwas of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Cuncil) on the recitation of translation during the Prayer. The MUI fatwas were in response to the new trend of reading Indonesian language during prayer among Indonesian Muslims. In Islam, the practice of worship (praying) has been regulated by and based on the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad Saw. Debates over the issues whether or not praying can be performed in local language arose when Muhammad Yusman Roy form Surabaya initiated the practice of praying by reciting Bahasa Indonesia instead of Arabic. The author presents different views among classical Islamic scholars (ulama) about the translation of shalat recitation and explains why the MUI has forbid this practice in the Indonesian context. Keywords: prayer, MUI, fatwa, ijtihad, innovation (bid’ah)

Abstract

This article is an attempt to examine and restructurize Ikhwan al-Shafa’s cosmological views. People’s perception of nature developing in the 10th century was that the nature was viewed in a more holistic approach. Nature is perceived as spiritualmetaphysic and material entity. This kind of approach is relevant to the current context after for centuries modern science, especially modern cosmological concept, has neglected spiritual-metaphysical dimension of the nature, and has only recognized the physical-material dimension of the nature. Therefore, over centuries teh meaning of nature has been reduced and this has led to inappropriate treatment toward nature. The author argues that the current perception of nature which neglects spiritual dimension has led to global environment crisis. Therefore, the holistic Ikhwan al-Shafa’s cosmological perspective is worth and relevant to current needs of humankind. Kata Kunci: Ikhwan al-Shafa’, cosmology, spiritual structure, material structure, universal active intellect.

Abstract

This article analyzes three Régis Blachère’s major theses pertaining to codification and promulgation of Mushaf ‘Utsmani (Utsmanic Manuscript) based on the assumption that codification of the Quranic texts is a historical event that needs to be examined through internal and external historicism approach. This articel argues that Blachère’s arguments about the political motives behind the codification of Mushaf ‘Utsmani is not based on a solid historical argument: his fault in presenting historical chronology of the codification of the Qur’an, his weakness in combining or compromising (talfiq) conflicting historical naratives, as well as his unobjetive in examining sources that he refers to. Therefore, the idea to reconstruct the critical edition of the Qur’an—which is influenced by Blachère theses, is hard to accomplish due to the absence of other authentic sources subsequent to abolition of non- Utsmanic Manuscripts. Keywords: the Qur’an, codification, Utsmanic Manuscript, Exegesis.

Abstract

Western scholars on Sufism so far have paid more attention to Sufi figures that left us with many written works, either in the form of poems, biography, apologia, or mystical treatise. Practically, al-Jilani only left us with three original works, wherein we do not find any ‘brilliant theory’ about Sufism. So, at the face value, this Western academic indifference about al-Jilani is just plainly plausible. Al-Jilani’s marginal position in the Western academic studies on Sufism in fact is an indication of a subtler ideological bias among many scholars. This article examines the life and works of al-Jilani while proposing a new theoretical basis in the study of Sufism. The writer argues that al-Jilani’s teaching is popular Sufism by definition Keywords: al-Jilani, spirituality, popular sufism
