This study aims to analyze the friendship between the colonizer with the colony in the Dutch East Indies. The study focuses on a number of works and letters of Haji Hasan Mustapa to C. Snouck Hurgronje. Mustapa was the Hoofd penghulu (Chief-penghulu) of Aceh and Bandung. He is a close friend of Snouck since his first met in Mecca in 1885. Through the social-intellectual history approach, the study tries to explain their closeness which are no longer merely a relationship between employer and employee, but has penetrated deeply into the true brother- hood and kinship ties. Instead, Mustapa looked Snouck as his close friends who have a commitment to defend each other. Mustapa shed his impression and expectation to meet him again someday in his letters. Mustapa often shed tears when remembering the time of togetherness that will not be forgotten throughout his life. It is an interplay friendship that have never imagined in shaping the face of colonialism in Indonesia, which its influence cannot be ignored until now.

Abstract

This article investigates Indonesian history with transnational approach espe- cially in tracing social community of Indonesia in the context of globalization during nineteenth century. In this article, author focuses on holy tomb of ulama or saint (wali), Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus, who died in the late eighteenth century and buried in Batavia. Although he died more than a century a go, his influence through tomb still can be sensed until now. In the nineteenth century, the tomb of Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus became a symbolic mediator of Arab Hadrami communities in Batavia to build contact with the only Independence Muslim states, Ottoman state, after the decline of Mughal state in 1857. In the late nineteenth century, Hadrami communities requested donation from Ottoman sultan or Caliph to repair the tomb of Sayyid Husein bin Abu Bakar al-Aydarus. Upon this request, author concludes that in the middle of modernization and globalization, Ottoman government in Istanbul at that juncture was still concerned to preserve its spiritual network wiwth Indonesian Archipelago based on the Tradition of Islam (al-din).

Abstract

This paper discusses the debates behind the formulation of Sharia regulation in Tasikmalaya. This paper argues that the initiators of Sharia regulation in Tasikmalaya are coming from mainstream islamic organizations such as Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama or Persis, but social organizations or non- mainstream islamic groups, such as Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), Front de- fenders of Islam (FPI) and Laskar Thaliban, including PKPPSI and the Indone- sian Ulema Council (MUI). This debate is seen in the perspective of the relation- ship between Islam and the state. There are at least four important topics exam- ined in this paper: the linkages between Shariah regulation and islamophobia, resistance and acceptance of Sharia regulation, the relationship between notion of Shariah and political party ideology, and Sharia regulation as a product of democracy. This paper also agues that two largest Muslim organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, both in position as jam’iyah and jamaah, less contributed to the debate of Shariah regulation in Tasikmalaya.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, one of the largest Islamic movement, has gone beyond a century, and it remains continuously in upholding the ideals of establishing “the truly Islamic society”. What is the Muhammadiyah spirit of sustainability in ad- dressing the challenges of the times? Through library approach, this study finds that the Muhammadiyah movement always loyal to and take inspiration from the three ethos of the Quran in achieving the goal of building a truly Islamic society, those are the ethos of rahmah (compassion), al-Ma’un and al-`Ashr. That ethos has been always established on integrative-interconnective approach between the in- terpretation of the Quran, the sacred heart-mind and the findings of science and technology, and the universal experience of humanity. Rationality is a key of developing the sacred heart-mind capabilities, in addition to experiencing of many nationalities and faiths. From here we know about how to save the lives of people in the world based on the ethos of rahmah. Human happiness is consisting of sincerity, remembering to death, and put science as the key to progress together. Muhammadiyah is also identical with the ethos of al-Ma`un, the religious worth of social praxis. Religiosity tends to reject the formalities of religion for it has been included in the social alignments to advocate the weaks. Al-`Ashr ethos means that religion (iman) and civilization (`amal shalih) are placed as two sepa- rate entities and should be achieved separately. Religion as symbolic formalities is to be important here. Civilization is built through a process of “learning and experiment” and persistency to defeat yourself. Last but not least, Muhammadiyah is no longer overly concerned with the poverty issue, but also regarded to the effective systems and institutions under the effective leadership in building al- hadarah al-fadhilah.
