Abstract

Online discussion forum is well-known in educational technology development especially in blended learning because it supports the traditional face to face (f2f) classroom. Moreover, online discussion forum is familiar as the leading of critical thinking process. Therefore, this present study is intended to analyze the influence of critical thinking to help improving speaking skill of the first semester students in Universitas Bandar Lampung.To achieve the goal, online discussion forum is provided to promote critical thinking through Schoology platform. A qualitative approach is employed to analyze the data. Observation, interview, and questionnaire are conducted to see the influence of critical thinking process during online discussion forum, and the influence of critical thinking to improve students‟ speaking skill. The finding indicates that the use of online discussion forum can promote students‟ critical thinking, and the students can perform better in the f2f classroom.

Abstract

With the extremely easy access to information through online platform and the increasing numbers of internet users, people get abundant information both from valid and reliable sources and invalid and unreliable ones.Given the situation, the existence of hoaxes and fake news is inevitable and one of the methods to tackle the spreading of fake news is by increasing students' literacy level, especially in recognizing news validity and reliability. In order to increase one's literacy level, some extensive hours of reading are required so that they are exposed to news and later become quality news literate. Media Literacy Project becomes a strategy to introduce the characteristics of hoaxes and fake news and this strategy is implemented in Critical Reading course, whose objectives are to distinguish facts from opinions, draw conclusions from written material based on knowledge, experience, logic and awareness of the source validity and reliability, and develop and practice critical readingskills necessary for success in content area courses by interpreting, evaluating, and applying the knowledge to understanding the reading content and context. This research tries to examine the significance of readers' literacy level in recognizing information validity and reliability and to analyze how Media Literacy Project could increase students' literacy level and their awareness of fake news and hoaxes written by some news portals

Abstract

One of the contributions of the study in Semantics area is conducting studies that focus on the meaning relation among lexical choices. The result contributes in providing information related to the appropriate choice of lexical in its context. This is also the interest and focus of this paper. Basing itself on Nida’s framework (1975), this paper covers the discussion and the analysis of the meaning relations among success-related words namely accomplishment, achievement, attainment, victory, triumph and fulfillment.

Abstract

Students have been equipped with technology at their fingertips. They can easily access information anytime and anywhere, as long as the internet connection is available. With the availability of mobile devices in their hands, students can learn better with the aid of Google Classroom. Using Google Classroom can promote their autonomy as this platform helps students to interact, negotiate, and decide the learning process. The study aims to discover students' perspective on the use of Google Classroom in English class among the students of Department of Islamic Economics, Islamic University of Indonesia. The study shows that students enjoy the learning process using this platform. Student-teacher interaction runs pretty well; additionally, feedback on assignments given can also be conducted real time. However, students see that problems, like, unstable internet connection and appropriate instructions on the material?s discussed are points that have to be solved in the coming courses.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out how the teachers improve the students’ ability in writing especially in writing text by using guided question. This study is a case study. The subject of the research is 25 students of seven C graders of SMP Taman Dewasa Ibu Pawiyatan Yogyakarta. The research consists of four steps; observing in pre-test, observing in post-test 1, observing in post-test 2, and observing in post-test 3. The data were in the form of the observation from the result of pre-test, observing in post-test 1, observing in post-test 2, and observing in post-test 3. The finding of the study indicated that the students can make a text descriptive automatically by using guided questions. The students can make a text description with easy by using guided question and the students’ ability in writing especially descriptive text was increased by using guided questions.

Abstract

Learners frequently do not care about the strategies they use to improve their vocabulary mastery. On the other hand, a strategy is important in learning and increasing for both vocabulary and knowledge. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find out the strategies that the students adopt to improve their vocabulary mastery. A survey method was used in this research. A questionnaire was used based on Vocabulary Learning Strategy Questionnaires (VLSQ) that is designed by Schmitt’s Taxonomy. It consisted of 25 items. Data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The results showed that the students in this survey are medium strategy users and the metacognitive strategy is the strategy the students of Academy of Foreign Language of Sinema Yogyakarta mostly adopt to improve their vocabulary mastery. It is followed by memory, determination, social (discovery), cognitive and the least is social (consolidation). In the context of English as Foreign Language students, it is suggested to the students and other readers to balance the five strategies in applying them both in learning and in improving their vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the students' perception of an iconic model for mobile assisted language learning. The Android application was developed to help nursing students who learn English for Specific Purposes (ESP) especially speaking. The data were obtained quantitatively. The instrument used was questionnaires which were distributed in two stages of the development process. The first was during the preliminary study and the second was distributed in the implementation stage. The result showed that the students perceived that the navigation pane, the screen design, the information presented, the media integration, and the overall functionality are good (4.1) out of the maximal score (5.00). In conclusion, SPINE application is also efficient and acceptable for the users in terms of its navigation pane, screen design information presentation, media integration, and overall functionality.
