Abstract

In learning a language, grammar is the most difficult to master because grammar is what most learners think language is. An empirical study was done to 27 students in Mts. Muhammad Basiuni Imran Sambas. A detailed analysis was done to 50 students’ answer sheets which produced by the students. The students’ answer sheets were collected from 20 items of multiple choice and 30 items changing sentences form in simple past tense. The analysis indicated that many students still have low understanding and also have difficulty when they constructing sentences using simple past tense. Quantitative descriptive analysis indicate that students’ difficulty occured chiefly on the use of verb, misplacing the linking verb, using auxiliary in verbal sentence and misuse of singular and plural subject.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to find out whether picture can improve the students’ speaking ability or not and to know how well picture can improve the ability of students of the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 3 Ketapang. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Ketapang in the Academic year 2013/2014 who consisted of 30 students. The design of this research was classroom action research. Through observation checklist table and field note, the students’ action was observed and reflected in every cycle. Then, the teacher prepared to treat the problem being found. In assessing students’ performance, the speaking test was served by the teacher in order to know how significant of the students’ improvement. The researcher found that composite picture could improve students’ speaking ability. It was showed by the change of students’ behavior during the treatment. In which, they showed their passive actions in the first cycle and it turned out to be active actions in the next cycle. They also showed their creativities during the class. As a result, composite picture was successfully solved the students’ problem in speaking ability.

Abstract

This research is aimed to increase students’ reading comprehension of recount text to the second year students of MTs YASTI Singkawang. The method of this research was Classroom Action Research. The sample was 27 second year students of MTs YASTI Singkawang. The tools of collecting data were presented in observation checklist, field note, and individual test. The results showed that STAD technique could improve students’ reading comprehension on recount text by three cycles of CAR.

Abstract

This research was to find out the effectiveness of popular English songs and to find out the significance of the effectiveness of popular English songs in teaching vocabulary to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Sengah Temila in the academic year 2013/2014. The research design was pre-experimental design. The researcher chose the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Sengah Temila as the participant who had been involved in this research. Particularly, the VIII B was considered as a sample of this research. Furthermore, based on the findings, it was found that teaching vocabulary through popular English songs was effective. The effectiveness of popular English songs was analyzed by effect size formula, thus, it was categorized as medium influence. Meanwhile, the result of Wilcoxon signed rank indicated that Z score was smaller than df score, it meant the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. The study concluded that the use of popular English songs should be effective to be applied in teaching and learning process especially in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the effectiveness of the use WH-Questions and to find out the significant effectiveness of teaching writing recount paragraph through the use of WH-Questions to the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Suhaid in academic year 2013/2014. This research was pre-experimental research and used one group of pretest and posttest design. The sample was chosen by using cluster sampling. There were 34 students from 2 classes as the population, while 17 students were taken from class A as the sample. The data was collected by measurement technique in the form of written test. Based on the findings, it was found that teaching recount paragraph writing by using WH-Questions was effective. The effectiveness of WH-Questions technique was analyzed by effect size formula, thus it was categories as high influence. Then, the result of t-test computation is higher than t-table. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, the researcher recommends that the use of WH-Questions technique can be an alternative way to teach writing, especially in teaching recount paragraph writing. This result hopefully would motivate teachers to use WH-Questions to teach writing in their classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of conducting this research is to answer the research questions which are, “Is the use of guided WH-Questions technique effective in teaching descriptive text writing at the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Pontianak in academic year of 2013/2014?” and “How effective is the use of guided WH-Questions technique in teaching descriptive text writing at the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Pontianak in academic year of 2013/2014?” The form of this research is pre-experimental study. The tool of data colleting was written test, in which the students were asked to write a descriptive text by the help of guided WH-Questions. The sample of this research was 35 students from Class VIII C. The findings of this research showed that the use of guided WH-Questions technique in teaching descriptive text writing was effective.Based on the calculation that the researcher has gotten, it also showed that the score of Effect Size was high. So, it indicated that the effect of guided WH-Questions technique in teaching descriptive text writing was highly effective. From that effective result, the researcher suggests that guided WH-Questions technique can be used in teaching English especially in writing skill.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the students’ motivation in English reading. The population of this research was 210 students. The researcher took 136 students as the participants of this research by using simple random sampling. Two tools were used in data collection. First, a questionnaire was distributed to 136 students to investigate aspects which influence students’ motivation in English reading. The second tool was interview. The interview was conducted to 4 students to know the reasons which influence students’ motivation in English reading. The questionnaire result showed that the students were intrinsically motivated and the result of interview proved that besides to add knowledge, or learn culture, most of them answered that their motivation was to add new vocabulary. In order to promote learners’ intrinsic motivation, the best way might be by providing them with interesting material.
