Abstract

Cooperative principle plays an important role in communication. It is one of major principles which guide people’s communication. It’s application in spoken is interested the researcher to analyze the flouting of cooperative principle maxims in Interview between president Barack Obama and Robin Roberts of ABC News "Good Morning America". This study aimed to find out which maxims are flouted in Barrack Obama’s interview. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation. Descriptive qualitative method was employed in processing the transcription data. It was analyzed using the theory of Grice’ s conversational maxims. Having analyzed the data. The write found the result that there are eighteen flouts of maxims which found in the interview. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that the flouting of maxims also occurred in formal communication such as in president’s interview. Moreover, the interviewee disobeyed these maxims for getting particular purposes.Key words: Cooperative principles; maxims; and flouting; interview

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the application of integration of roundtable brainstorming into team pair solo technique in writing of descriptive texts and to investigate the improvement of students’ participation and achievement after taught by using the integration of the techniques. This study was an action research which was carried out through a preliminary study, first and second cycle activities. The subjects of this study were VII grade students of State Junior High School no.1 Semaka, Tanggamus, Lampung consisting of thirty two students. To collect the data, the researcher used instruments inform of interview, observation sheets, writing tests, and questionnaires. The findings of the research showed that students’ participation improved from the preliminary study, first and second cycle. In the preliminary study there were twenty six students classified as poor, six students classified as fair and no student classified as good in participation. While in the first cycle there were three students classified as fair and twenty nine students classified as good in participation and in the second cycle all students were classified as good in participation. The students’ writing also improved. The average score of students writing in the preliminary study was 53.31, first cycle was 64.41, and second cycle was 72.56.Key words: Roundtable Brainstorming, Team Pair Solo Technique, Students’ Participation, Writing Descriptive Texts

Abstract

The action reserach aims at improving the students’ writing skill especially to write advertsements and posters. Both are the short functional texts to be learned at the second semester. According to the data on pre cycle, the students of second semester got difficulties to write advertisements and posters. A treatment was necessary to help the students overcome their problem. To consider the related literature, the writer decided to implement ESA sequence (Harmer 2001) in the class. The elements of teaching in ESA Sequence are Engage (to arouse the students’ interests), Study (learn the language focus), and Activate (use the language freely and communicatively). The data were taken from the test of the linguistic competence mastery, the students writing, and the questionnaire. The students’ linguistic competence got increased as shown by the score (58 in pre-cycle, 66 in cycle 1, and 70 in cycle 2). The students’ ability to write the short functional texts also get improved as indicated by the average score on writing tasks (53 in pre-cycle, 63 in cycle 1, 72 in cycle 2). The interest also gets better as shown by the score of the questionnaire (22,3 in pre-cycle, 33,5 in cycle 1, and 37 in cycle 2). It means ESA Sequence can improve the studets’ ability to write advertisements and posters.Key words : advertisement, ESA (Engange Study Activate), poster

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the effectiveness of KWL as the strategy in teaching reading comprehension to the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Metro. The quantitative research was conducted and this study is population research, because all the member of population is taken as sample, which consisted of 41 students of XI IPA class.To collects the data the researcher used pre-test and post-test. The test is in the form of multiple choices. To know whether there is a significantly difference between the students’ pre-test scores with their post-test scores, the writer analyzed the data by using Paired Sample T-test. Before the instrument was used in a research, the instruments of pre-test and post-test has been tried out in order to achieve good validity and reliability. The research findings show that in the pre-test, the students’ lowest score was 62.50 and the highest score was 80.00 with the mean 70.0000. Meanwhile, in the post-test, the students’ lowest score was 62.50 and the highest score was 90.00 with the mean 72. 4390. It means that KWL strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension. It can also be proved by value of t-test with probability (Asymp.Sig.2 tailed) was less than the level of significance (0.002 < 0.05).Keywords : Effectiveness; KWL Strategy; Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out whether there is a significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of first semester students taughtusing English pop songs and that taught without using English pop songs as a medium. This study involved 64 students of first semesterof STKIP Muhammadiyah Pringsewu Lampung in the academic year of 2012/2013 as the objects of the study. The result of the study shows there is a significant difference in the student’s vocabulary mastery between the experimental group who are taughtusing English pop songs and that taught without using English pop songs as a medium.The mean of post test score of the experimental group is 16.93 while the mean score of the control group is 14.54. The result of t-test shows that t-observed value which is higher than the t-value of the table (2.572>1.99), with a probability value of 0.008 which is lower than the significance level (0.008 < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of English pop songscould improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.Keywords: Vocabulary, English Pop Songs
