According to the data on pre cycle, the students of second semester got difficulties to write advertisements and posters. A treatment was necessary to help the students overcome their problem. To consider the related literature, the writer decided to implement ESA sequence (Harmer 2001) in the class. The elements of teaching in ESA Sequence are Engage (to arouse the students’ interests), Study (learn the language focus), and Activate (use the language freely and communicatively). The data were taken from the test of the linguistic competence mastery, the students writing, and the questionnaire. The students’ linguistic competence got increased as shown by the score (58 in pre-cycle, 66 in cycle 1, and 70 in cycle 2). The students’ ability to write the short functional texts also get improved as indicated by the average score on writing tasks (53 in pre-cycle, 63 in cycle 1, 72 in cycle 2). The interest also gets better as shown by the score of the questionnaire (22,3 in pre-cycle, 33,5 in cycle 1, and 37 in cycle 2). It means ESA Sequence can improve the studets’ ability to write advertisements and posters.Key words : advertisement, ESA (Engange Study Activate), poster

The objectives of this research are to identify the effectiveness of KWL as the strategy in teaching reading comprehension to the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Metro. The quantitative research was conducted and this study is population research, because all the member of population is taken as sample, which consisted of 41 students of XI IPA class. To collects the data the researcher used pre-test and post-test. The test is in the form of multiple choices. To know whether there is a significantly difference between the students’ pre-test scores with their post-test scores, the writer analyzed the data by using Paired Sample T-test. Before the instrument was used in a research, the instruments of pre-test and post-test has been tried out in order to achieve good validity and reliability. The research findings show that in the pre-test, the students’ lowest score was 62.50 and the highest score was 80.00 with the mean 70.0000. Meanwhile, in the post-test, the students’ lowest score was 62.50 and the highest score was 90.00 with the mean 72. 4390. It means that KWL strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension. It can also be proved by value of t-test with probability (Asymp.Sig.2 tailed) was less than the level of significance (0.002 < 0.05).Keywords : Effectiveness; KWL Strategy; Reading Comprehension.

The result of the t-test computation showed that tobserved was higher than t table (6.184>2.036), with the degree of freedom 32 and the level of significance 0.05 and the probability (Asymp.Sig.2 tailed) was lower than the level of significance (0.000<0.05). It can be concluded that the null hypothesis of no difference was rejected. In other words, teaching reading comprehension by using learning cell technique is effective than teaching reading comprehension by using conventional way. Keywords: Learning cell, reading comprehension, narrative text

Research method of this study was pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The writer used speaking test and analyzed the data by using conversion of score range, individual score, and match t-test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that students’ average score in the pre-test was 46.43 and post-test was 60.54. Finally, the results of matched t-test calculation shows that the t-obtain was higher than t-table. The t-obtained was 31.37 while the t-table was 1.717. It means that the null hypotheses (Ho) was rejected and automatically the alternative hypotheses (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that it is significantly effective to teach speaking skill by using pictures. Keywords: Effectiveness, Speaking, Picture
