Abstract

Kata kunci : emansipasi, feminisme, jender, paralelisme horisontal. Feminisme dapat dikatakan sebagai gerakan yang lahir dengan tujuan awal mengangkat posisi perempuan dalam lingkaran sistem patriarkal. Banyak literaturmenyebutkan momentum bagi kelahiran feminisme di Eropa adalah pada masa Revolusi Prancis tahun 1789 dan salah satu pelopornya adalah Marie Olympe de Gouges. Sementara di Indonesia, gerakan feminisme telah ada bahkan sejak zamanpenjajahan kolonial Belanda dengan salah satu tokohnya adalah Roehana Koeddoes. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk 1) mengetahui perbandingan latar belakang dan bentuk gerakan emansipasi wanita yang dilakukan oleh Marie Olympe de Gouges dan Roehana Koeddoes, dan 2) mengetahui prinsip feminisme Marie Olympe de Gouges dan Roehana Koeddoes ditinjau dari bentuk gerakan emansipasi wanita yang dilakukan kedua tokoh tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori paralelisme horisontal yang dikemukakan oleh Kuntowijoyo dan digunakan untuk membandingkan dua gejala sejarah yang sama di tempat dan waktu yang berbeda. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menggunakan teori feminisme untuk menganalisis latar belakang yang mempengaruhi terbentuknya pola pikir dan gerakan emansipasi, serta untuk menyimpulkan prinsip-prinsip feminisme dari kedua tokoh tersebut. Studi literatur digunakan sebagai metode pengumpulan data, kemudian data dianalisis menggunakan metode analisis komparatif dan metode analisis historis.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan dalam latar belakang, wujud gerakan emansipasi, dan fokus pada prinsip emansipasi kedua tokoh tersebut. Kemiripan terletak pada kegemaran menulis dan keterlibatan kedua tokoh dalam bidang jurnalistik yang menyuarakan semangat emansipasi wanita.Penulis menyarankan untuk menganalisis kedua tokoh melalui bidang ilmu lain seperti psikologi, dan lebih memperdalam kajian mengenai gerakan feminisme kedua tokoh tersebut.

Abstract

Keywords: African American Vernacular English, Christopher Wallace in Notorious Movie. Language is very important for human. It is functioned as a tool for people to communicate with others, to deliver ideas, messages, feeling, etc. Language and society are closely related. Certain society speaks certain language or certain language shows identities of certain society. African Americans speak different kind of English called African American Vernacular English (AAVE) which has distinctive grammatical features compared to standard English. The researcher conducts a research about AAVE grammatical features that are used by Christopher Wallace in Notorious Movie using theories by Rickford and Wolfram. This research focuses on two problems: (1) What utterances are containing AAVE grammatical features found in Christopher Wallace’s utterances in the movie entitled Notorious?, (2) What AAVE grammatical features are performed by Christopher Wallace in the movie entitled Notorious?.This research uses qualitative approach in document analysis to describe the AAVE grammatical features used by Christopher Wallace in Notorious Movie. The data are transcribed utterances produced by Christopher Wallace taken from Notorious Movie which is downloaded from ganool.com website.This research reveals that most of AAVE grammatical features are found in the utterances of Christopher Wallace in Notorious Movie namely ain’t as a general preverbal negator, multiple negations, formation of direct question, absence of relative pronoun, absence of third person singular present tense –s, absence of auxiliary, generalization of was to use with plural subject, use of been to mark a state or action that began a long time ago and is still relevant, use of existential they got as a plural equivalent of singular it is, use of done to emphasize the completed nature of an action, use of auxiliary verb don’t instead of doesn’t, use of negative inversion, and use of y’all and they to mark second person plural and third person plural posessive.The researcher hopes that this research can contribute a better and deeper understanding about African American Vernacular English. He suggests the nextresearchers especially English Department students conduct the research with different objects and theories of AAVE since this research does not cover all aspects of language function.

Abstract

Keywords: teaching methods, Citra Berkat School, English as Foreign Language(EFL). Nowadays English is an International language which been used as a means of communication in several bilingual schools in Indonesia such as Citra Berkat School. Teaching English as a foreign language is not as easy as teaching the first and second language because the students have not accustomed to acquiring the foreign language. It needs several teaching methods to help the learners successful to use it at school. This research is intended to analyze the teaching methods which are used in Citra Berkat School and the effectiveness of the teaching methods at the school as an EFL (English as Foreign Language) context.This study used qualitative methods by conducting an observation. The subject of this research was an English teacher at Citra Berkat School. The data were taken from the observation result of the ways of the teacher taught in several classes. The sample of the research was chosen purposively.The writer finally finds that there are two kinds of teaching methods which are used in Citra Berkat School, they are Suggestopedia and Communicative Language Teaching. It is shown by several indicators of those teaching method principles which have been applied in that school. Furthermore, eight from nine criteria of effective teaching which are proposed by Jun Li have been applied. Only one of those criteria which has not been applied that is Build Reading Comprehension Ability. It means that the teaching methods used in Citra Berkat School has been effective because 90% of the principles have been completed.It is suggested that the next researcher analyzes the comparison of several teachers who have different characteristics with similar theories. Since the teacher is the role model of the students in the class, the teacher is supposed to improve his/her ability in English.

Abstract

Keywords: Speech style, Tendangan Dari Langit movie, Wahyu.This study analyses the speech styles in some utterances used by the main character in the movie Tendangan Dari Langit. The writer applies Joos (cited inBroderick,1976) as a main theory and Chaer and Agustina (2010) as the supporting theory. There are two problems of the study to be solved. They are to find out the types of speech style and the speech styles which are mostly used by Wahyu in The Movie Tendangan Dari Langit.In this study, the writer used qualitative approach with document or content analysis. The writer analyzed the utterances stated by Wahyu. Then, the writer analyzed the types and the mostly used types by Wahyu based on script of the movie.Related to the first problem, the writer found that Wahyu used all types of speech style in his daily conversation. There are 2 utterances considered as Frozen style, 1 utterance considered as Formal style, 5 utterances considered as Consultative style, 79 utterances considered as Casual style and 32 utterances considered as Intimate style. Also, the writer found that out of 5, there are only 2 types of speech style as the most used by Wahyu. The first is casual style and the second is intimate style. From 118 utterances, there are 79 utterances considered as Casual style and 32 utterances considered as Intimate style.The writer suggests to use another  theory of speech style, for example nababan. The other theory like Dr. P. W. J. Nababan (1987) would help the next researchers to conduct the study of speech style in terms of enrich the theory. Then, uses English movie as the subject of the study. Also, the writer suggests to conduct the study of speech style based on novel or short story.

Abstract

Key Terms: Verbal Irony, Maxim, Flouting of Maxim, Implicature, Bad Teacher Movie. Movie is one of entertainment media which can reflect daily life, especially in terms of the conversation. This study discusses flouting maxims through verbal irony occur in Bad Teacher Movie. The problem of this study is what kinds of flouting maxim occur through verbal ironies uttered by the characters in Bad Teacher Movie and what are the implied meanings.This study used qualitative approach since the data were in the form of the transcript of Bad Teacher Movie. The writer collected the data by reading the transcript and found verbal ironies which flout the maxims. After that, the writer identified the kinds of maxim being flouted, analyzed them, and drew conclusion. In analysing the implied meanings of the ironical utterances, the writer consider the context occurs in the movie and interpret the implied meanings based on the context.The writer found that all of maxims are flouted by the characters through 21 verbal ironies. The most frequently flouted maxim is maxim of quality which is found in 21 utterances. The second are maxim of relation and maxim of manner which are found in 4 utterances for each maxim. The least is maxim of quantity which is found in 3 utterances. Also, there are 9 verbal ironies which flout more than one maxim. The flouting maxims occur mostly because the characters give false contribution in a conversation.The writer suggests that the next researchers relate some aspects of verbal irony or flouting maxims with other theories for example politeness theory. The next researchers are also suggested to conduct similar study in another different object such as novel, talk show, or radio show.

Abstract

Kata kunci  : Musik kalipso, revolusi, kreolMusik memiliki peran penting dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Melalui musik seseorang dapat menyampaikan perasaannya. Selain itu musik juga dapat dijadikan sebagai media penghibur ataupun komunikasi serta menjadi suatu ciri khas kebudayaan, seperti Trinidad yang memiliki musik tradisional, yaitu musik kalipso. Musik kalipso pada awalnya dinyanyikan oleh para budak Afrika yang dibawa oleh bangsawan Prancis ke Trinidad. Pada awalnya, musik kalipso dinyanyikan dengan Bahasa Kreol Prancis namun memasuki abad ke 19, musik ini lebih sering dinyanyikan dengan Bahasa Inggris.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui latar belakang penggunaan Bahasa Prancis Kreol dalam lirik lagu musik kalipso serta mengetahui peran musik kalipso bagi masyarakat Trinidad, khususnya pasca Revolusi Prancis 1789. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori multi kausalitas dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Bahasa Kreol Prancis di dalam lirik lagu musik tradisional kalipso di Trinidad disebabkan oleh dua faktor yaitu faktor sosial politik dan sosial budaya. Fakor sosial politik berkaitan dengan Revolusi Prancis yang berdampak besar bagi kaum bangsawan sehingga mereka harus mencari tempat tinggal yang lebih aman selain Prancis dan salah satunya adalah Pulau Trinidad. Mereka dapat menetap disana karena telah menyetujui dan menerima perjanjian cedula of population yang dikeluarkan oleh Kerajaan Spanyol. Pada saat itu Spanyol masih menguasai pulau tersebut. Para bangsawan Prancis yang datang ke Trinidad juga membawa beberapa kebudayaan mereka. Unsur kebudayaan yang paling menonjol adalah Bahasa Kreol Prancis. Hal tersebut merupakan faktor sosial budaya dalam penelitian ini. Sementara itu, peran musik kalipso bagi masyrakat di Trinidad antara lain sebagai media komunikasi, sebagai  hiburan masyarakat, dan berfungsi sebagai ciri khas kebudayaan di Trinidad.Untuk penelitian selanjutnya, peneliti menyarankan agar peneliti selanjutnya mengkaji penyebaran Bahasa Kreol Prancis dalam kehidupan sosial di Trinidad atau unsur kebudayaan lainnya yang mempengaruhi perkembangan musik kalipso di Trinidad.

Abstract

Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Consumers’ Interpretation, PriaPunya Selera Slogan.  This research tries to analyze Pria Punya Selera slogan used in Gudang Garam advertisement based on three dimensions of discourse in Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. It is conducted to find out: (1) the meaning of Pria Punya Selera slogan based on three dimensions of discourse in Fairclough’s model of CDA, (2) the interpretations of Gudang Garam Cigarette male consumers in Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya towards the Pria Punya Selera slogan used in Gudang Garam advertisement, and (3) the persuasive impact of Pria Punya Selera slogan used in Gudang Garam advertisement towards the Gudang Garam cigarette male consumers in Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya.This research uses a qualitative approach by using content or document analysis to analyze the meaning of Pria Punya Selera slogan and the consumers’ interpretation. There are two steps in collecting the data, namely observation and interview. In addition, the researcher also uses instruments such as questionnaire and interview guide to conduct this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses two processes, firstly analyzing the sentence of the slogan text and then analyzing the result of interview.The findings reveal that the meaning of Pria Punya Selera slogan is composed of three words which is ideologically contested and some of linguistic features which are included in it. At the level of interpretation, the main goal of text production and text interpretation of Pria Punya Selera slogan are fulfilled well, proven by the consumers’ interpretation. However, this slogan does not significantly influence the consumers since the flavor and price are the main factors influencing them in choosing their cigarette.In conclusion, this slogan does not give persuasive impact to consumers in choosing Gudang Garam cigarette, instead the consumers prefer to choose Gudang Garam cigarette based on flavor and affordable price. This slogan only gives a good and interesting impression for consumers. Finally, the researcher suggests for the next researcher enrich the field of this research and possibly explore other numerous objects with different theories of CDA. It will be very useful for the knowledge development especially in critical discourse analysis.

Abstract

Keywords: Morphology, Word formation process, compounding, Javanese language, Panjebar Semangat.In this study, the writer conducts a study of Javanese language compounding in Panjebar Semangat magazine. It is focuses on cerkak rubric. There are two research problems to be solved: (1) what are the component structures of Javanese compound words found in Panjebar Semangat magazine based on position of modifier? and (2) what are the equality of component meaning of Javanese compound words found in Panjebar Semangat magazine?The writer used qualitative approach and document analysis in conducting the study. The data were obtained from cerkak rubric in Panjebar Semangat magazine containing Javanese compound words. The analysis was based on the theory from Soepomo (1979).This study reveals that 32 Javanese compound words are found in cerkak rubric of Panjebar Semangat magazine. Based on the position of modifier and word class, the writer found 12 words belonging to head preceded by modifier, 5 words belonging to modifier preceded by head, 13 words belonging to the first word which has equal position with the second word. However, there are some unique forms which are different from the form of position of modifier generally that is one of the words performs as a supporting word and most of them do not have a classification of word. Besides, the writer found 3 classification of equality of meaning. There are 13 words belong to the first component has the same meaning with the second component, 4 words belong to the first component has the contradicted meaning with the second component, and 15 words belong to the last equality of component meaning which is there is no relation between the first component and the second component.The writer suggests the next researchers who are interested in conducting a research in similar topic are expected to use different objectives, such as the function, the usage etc. Moreover, the next researchers are expected to use other theories concerning the idea of Javanese compound word.

Abstract

Key words: the vocabulary mastery, the vocabulary video, the students, SDN 1Sugiwaras. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of vocabulary video in teaching English vocabulary at fourth grade at SDN Sugiwaras Candi Sidoarjo. This technique can improve and increase student’s ability to learn the target language and make them enjoy teaching learning process. It supposes to motivate students to learn English actively by using vocabulary video. Students also are encouraged to get long memorizing of the words and their meaning.The method that is used in this study is the quasi experimental method by using t-test, to find out the significant difference between recent technique and vocabulary video technique through the score pre-test and post-test.The result of analysis in the study showed that teaching vocabulary by using vocabulary video is success. Using vocabulary video made process learning effective and made students motivated, so it can be used as an alternative method in teaching vocabulary based on the result of gained post-test students’ achievement at the Fourth Grade of SDN Sugiwaras Candi Sidoarjo year of 2014.The school should give wider opportunity for the teacher to use “Vocabulary Video” as medium on teaching English vocabulary. It is important because this study found significant difference between the mastery of English vocabulary of the fourth grade students of SDN Sugiwaras, Candi Sidoarjo in academic year of 2014 before and after being taught by using vocabulary video.

Abstract

Keywords: Freud, real fear, neurotic fear, realistic anxiety, moral anxiety, neuroticanxiety, object.Humans are the most wonderful creatures who have ability to think much better than other creatures. They all have their own mindset that differentiates one and another. The illustration of various humans’ personality can be seen from film. It usually tells story about human’s life and behavior that can be analyzed. Panic Room, a thriller film by David Fincher involves a family which is threatened by unfamiliar people or strangers, in this case are the thieves. This study applies psychoanalysis as theory, because it explains about humans’ nature behavior. There are a lot of concerns in connection with psychoanalysis including fear and anxiety.Freud explains that there are two kinds of fear: neurotic fear and real fear; and three kinds of anxiety: neurotic, realistic, and moral anxiety. Even though fear and anxiety seem similar but they are actually different. In Panic Room, there are some events that indicate fear and anxiety. It also shows the reaction from the characters when they experience fear or anxiety. The reactions to fear shown by the characters are flight, defense, and attack. However, anxiety is usually followed by physical sensations, such as trembling or crying.The result of this study shows that even though the characters show that their fears are caused by the same object although they may show different reaction to it. The different reaction shown by the characters is influenced by the past experiences they have had earlier. The characters that experienced anxiety show different causes and reaction to their anxiety. The writer suggests the next researcher to analyze defense mechanism shown in Panic Room Film because it has close connection which anxiety studied in this thesis.
