Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the maxims flouted by the main character and the implicatures of the utterances containing maxims flouted by the main character in The Dictator movie. The researcher conducted a study on flouting maxims in Themovie since the communication happening between the Dictator main character and his interlocutors in the movie contains a lot of flouting of conversational maxims. Furthermore, this research used qualitative approach because the analysis is in the form of description rather than number. The results showed that the main character in the movie flouts all types of conversational maxims; maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Then, the main character presents the implicature in several ways, such as by being more informative, making sure, agreeing or making jokes depending on the purpose and the situation under which the conversation occurs. From the findings above, we can conclude that through the flouted utterances produced, the main character shows and express various kind of flouting of Grice’s conversational maxims because he wants to deliver his implied meaning to his hearer. Keywords: Pragmatics, Cooperative Principle, Flouting Maxims, Implicatures, The Dictator Movie.

Abstract

Then, the research was conducted through documentary analysis since the researcher analyzed Gru’s utterances containing request strategies. The researcher collected the data by using several steps those are watching the movie, finding the transcript, reading the transcript of the movie, and selecting and listing the utterances of the main character based on request strategies. Then the researcher analyzed the contexts that motivate the application of the request strategies used by the main character of Despicable Me movie. The result of the research shows that there are seven out of nine types of request strategies used by the speaker namely (1) mood derivable, (2) performative, (3) hedged performatives, (4) obligation statement, (5) want statement, (6) query preparatory, and (7) mild hint. The finding also shows that the type of request strategies used most frequently in this movie is obligation statement. The contexts that motivate the application of the request strategies used most frequently in this movie is relational context because this movie tells about the relationship between a father and his children.Based on the result of the study, the writer wants to give suggestions for the next researcher to conduct a research in a different object of the study and different theories such as request strategies used in Bahasa Indonesia. It might have different result because of cultural differences. So, he or she may get different finding as well. Key words: Speech acts, request strategies, Despicable Me movie

Abstract

This research tries to reveal the types of translation shifts found in the subtitles of The Hunger Games and what might influence the translator of the subtitles of The Hunger Games to do shifting. This research is a qualitative research and the method used is content or document analysis. The writer uses both the English subtitle and the Indonesian subtitle in order to know what kinds of translation shifts found there. The category shift with the most occurrence is the unit or rank shift, and the category shift with the least occurrence is the class shift. Mostly, the translator does the shift since every language has its own grammar, rules and systems. The structures differ, especially for languages that come from different family of language such as English and Indonesian. Those differences can create a gap and it should be bridged by the translator by doing shift in order to avoid the unnaturalness in translation. Keywords : translation, shift, subtitles.

Abstract

Slogans usually are used to deliver ideas, visions, emotions, and opinions in very short sentences. In their campaign, the presidential candidates all over the world always use certain slogans which show their vision and mission if they are running for Presidential Candidates and also to persuade the voters of the country to give their vote in the presidential Election Day. The researcher wanted to analyze the structure on the campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America from 1992 until 2012 since it affected the people in the country in deciding which candidates to choose. The researcher conducted this research to find out the transformational grammars on campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America. Therefore, the researcher used qualitative approach in this research in which the primary instrument is the researcher herself to collect the data and analyze the data. The data of this research were 10 campaign slogans from the elected president from 1992 to 2012. The data were taken from www.presidentsusa.net.The researcher found that the transformational grammars that were dominantly used on campaign slogans used by the presidential candidates of the United States of America were imperative transformation which used Imp + you + will + VP => VP as the rule of the tree diagram and emphatic transformation which used Emph + X + tense + *** 1** + Y => X + tense + ***1** + Y as the rule of the tree diagram, both of the rules were written by Bornstein, 1977.She also has suggestion for the next researcher to use the theory of functional grammar since campaign slogans had a hidden meaning and the structures which were used in the campaign slogans had the different function in convincing the hearers and the readers. Keywords: tree diagram, transformational grammar, campaign slogans.
