Racism is the crucial issue in this world and has become a problem sincehundreds of years ago. The colonialist who came to America believes that blackpeople are inferior caste in society. This construction is used to legitimize theenslavement of blacks. This leads to the oppression of the whites toward theblacks. As human beings the blacks have no rights to live in freedom andprosperity. In society, they have a lower position than the whites. In contrast ofthe white still have a higher position than the competent black person. Racialbiases against blacks are still apparent today through many different areas of thecriminal justice system. Racist attitudes are considered as laws, religion, and everyday practice which influence all of the aspects of life. As it isshown in the movie, Rubin had many obstacles in his life since he was a kidcaused by racial discrimination. The racial discrimination is maintained by whitesupremacy to control their power and to eliminate the opportunity for coloredpeople. This research result (1) Many conflicts in it are the result of prejudice anddiscrimination against blacks and portrayed through such ways as personal life, legal law, appearance, and even the setting and the assumption of the distinctionbecomes crucial. (2) The physical appearance becomes the most important factorin this movie. Racism usually stems of ignorance. It its the assumption that thecolor of one‟s skin has something to do with intelligence. Keywords: racism, film, The Hurricane

Abstract

Reading is one of language skills that is important to be mastered. Reading can help the reader to get new information and knowledge through printed media. Reading miscue analysis is one of the main research instruments in reading. As readers, it is important to know their own strategy and skills when reading the text, and Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) can help them to discover it. In RMA, the students are asked to read the text orally, retell the context and discuss together with the writer. The writer conducts a study on reading miscue analysis of three good readers of second semester students in Study Program of English of Universitas Brawijaya. There are two problems in this study: (1) What oral reading miscues do the good reader of second semester students in Study Program of English make? (2) Why do the good readers of second semester students in Study Program of English do the oral reading miscues? In this study, the writer analyses the types of miscue by using theory of Goodman and Burke (1973) and the three cueing systems by using Goodman’s theory (1969). This research used a qualitative method because this study focused on the depth of understanding and the writer records the process of collecting the data. The results of this research showed that even a good reader produced miscues and there were fifty nine (59) miscues, 20 omissions (34%), 17 mispronunciations (29%), 9 substitutions (15%), 8 self-corrections (14%), 3 insertions (5%) and 2 repetitions (3%). There was no reversal miscue produced by the students. The three of the students were good reader, because in retelling session they could predict the word that they did not know and could make a general conclusion in the text. Their skills were good, because they were fluent when reading the text and they were able to comprehend the text. This research hopefully can help the participants to know their own strength and weakness in reading and can be the additional source or teaching materials for the lecturers. The writer hopes it can give new contribution for the next researcher to conduct the same research in different object. Keywords: Reading, Miscue, Miscue Analysis, Retrospective Miscue Analysis, Good Reader

Abstract

Existentialism is a branch of philosophical thinking that begins with the human subject—not merely the thinking subject, but the acting, feeling, and living human individual. Related to the theory, researcher needs to grasp the basic meaning of existentialism. This study is carried out to establish connection between the theory of existence and how the main character in the novel find the meaning of her existence in this world. This study is a qualitative one, which was conducted by the study of literature then connect it with the related theory. This study is a literature analysis since this study uses the traits of the main character in the novel. The main character’s traits are analyzed using the existentialism theory of Jean Paul Sartre. The result of the study revealed that the main character in this novel was struggling to find what was the meaning of her existence in this world among people in her surrounding by pursuing her freedom to live a normal life through appealing herself to the court by the help of several people. In relation of the theory of existence by Jean Paul Sartre, the main character found that she existed to be an organ donor for her sister and that she wanted to gain freedom for her existence since she did not want to be an organ donor anymore. From the result of the study, some suggestions may be derived. The researcher should give attention to another conflict that main character in this novel experienced, which is the effect of her psychological conflict in her behavior and her everyday life. There are also many opportunities for the next researcher to use various approaches to analyze this novel, or using existentialism to analyze other literary works. Keywords: Existentialism, Literature Studies, Novel

As the data, the writer uses action figure trading terms from Kaskus as keywords to find the register applications in action figure trading forum on Kaskus research design to identify specified characteristics of the materials. The finding shows 14 registers found. The language variety belongs to register because it is only used and can only be understood by the members. The register consists of 10 terms which similar with ordinary words form and the rest 4 terms are not familiarly used in common language. The register only has particular meaning. The terms use is determined by the context which influences the activities because the situational factors like field, mode and tenor are the main factors to determine the purpose in using register. The register helps the members to simplify the language, to recognize the member and to decrease certain probability of deceit. Then the members always use informal talk and they always intend to build a seller-customer and a customer-customer relationship. As a conclusion, the writer realizes that register variables consist of field, mode and tenor are not the only device to analyze the register phenomenon. Moreover, he focuses this research only on the vocabulary meaning. Therefore, he suggests the next researcher to use another way to analyze a register phenomenon and conduct a research in a different social network in many different points of view.
