Abstract

Characterization is the process of creating a character, including: words, actions, thoughts, appearance, other peoples’ thoughts and perceptions about the character. In this study, the writercompares detectives’ characterization and investigates it with the biography of the authors of thenovels entitled Valley of Fear and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. This study is conducted todiscover the differences between both Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot’s characterization. This study reveals that Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot’s characterization leads to somedifferences: (1) Holmes becomes enthusiastic and not giving up in facing the secret passwordalthough he knows that he was in danger if solving the case, while Poirot tends to relax andactually requested in advance by one of the relatives of victims to investigate the murder; (2)Holmes prefers to use his skill of deduction, observation, discussion, and makes a hypothesis toreveal the truth of the case; while Poirot tends to focus on order or organize the fact, analyze thecase with physiological aspects, and rearrange his ideas when face the dead end of the case. Asthe result, the way of the detectives face the case and the method they use are the differencesbetween Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot’s characterization. The characterizations of both ofthem are influenced by the biography of the author. The writer suggests that more comprehensive studies on other main characters can be foundin detective’s novel or others. Recalling the importance of characterization that is influenced bythe author’s biography, the writer also suggests that future researchers investigate other intrinsicaspects of the novel such as theme, plot and setting and their relation to the author’s biography. It attemptsto answer two problems, which are: (1) what kinds of language functions used by CarlFredricksen in the dialogues of the movie Up(2) how the language functions help thewriter in constructing the message in the movie Up.  The writer applied qualitative approach in this study since all data are in theform of words. The type of the research is content analysis since it intended to analyzethe content of the data, which are in the form of movie script to find the languagefunctions. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of Halliday (1992).  Based on the result of the analysis and language function of Halliday, it is foundthat there are seven languagefunctions according to Halliday (1992) in the utterancesproduced by Carl to Russell in movie Up. They are instrumental, regulatory, representational, interactional, personal, heuristic and imaginative functions. The mostfrequently used regulatory function which intended to manage the behavior of others, tomanipulate the person in the environment, which is known as do as tell you function. Each utterance carries its own message based on the language functions it has. Therefore, it is important to know the topic being discuses and the context where thedialogue occurs.  Based on the research question and discussion of the data presentation andanalysis, the conclusion can describe dealing with the language function in Up themovie that is used by Carl as the elderly man and Russell the young boy who stuck inadventure with Carl. The writer suggest for the further researcher that since this study isconducting language function by Michael Halliday, it will be more interesting toanalyze by using another theory on language function. Keywords: Language Function, Message, Movie Dialogue

Abstract

Freud’s three harmonious personality systems is an important need to be reached by human in their lives. The three systems must be organized well, so that people can satisfy their needs and wants. If the three systems do not work well, it will produce conflicts, include internal and external conflict. In fact, people will feel worry, anxious, and angry in their life in facing and passing their conflicts. This condition is reflected in a movie entitled Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The movie tells about the journey of a-nine-years-old-boy named Oskar in facing the conflicts in his life. Therefore, the author will answer the problems formulation of this study: (1) how the main character’s internal conflicts happen in the story (2) how the main character’s external conflicts happen in the story.  This study uses a psychological approach to analyze and interpret data. This study uses a qualitative approach to describe the events clearly and systematically.  The result of this study shows that Oskar, the main character of the movie Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, reaches his satisfaction because he successfully gets his wants after he faces conflicts in his life. For the next researchers, it is recommended for students majoring on literature to analyze the character’s conflicts from psychoanalysis point of view. Keywords: main character, internal and external conflicts, Freud’s three systems of personality.

Abstract

Language is important for the society because it is part of human life. In common communication, a person may use a certain code or variety that is called as style. The style which occurs in spoken discourse is called as speech style. Speech styles are the characteristics mode arranging the words, particularly the use of language between male and female. In this study, the writer is interested in investigating the differences between woman and man which is reflected in LOL movie. The research problems of this study are (1) What are the speech style used by the female main characters in LOL movie?; (2) What are the speech style used by the male main characters in LOL movie? This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were the conversations between the female and male main characters. In analyzing the data, the writer used gender differentiation theory proposed by Adelaide Haas (1979, p.616). It is stated that male speech and female speech style have been observed to differ in their form, topic, content, and use. The finding shows that both women and men have differences in the way of speaking. Based on form, female characters tend to swear and use more slang words while man character does not show it. Based on the topic, women are likely to talk about life’s trouble, pornography, and life style. The topic that man builds in this movie is also the life trouble. The content of the conversation of this movie supports the theory that woman has positive value judgment and man has hostile judgment. Based on use, women are assertive while men are nonassertive. In conclusion, based on Adelaide Haas’ theory, the writer found out that women and men language are mostly different. It happened because women like to maintain the relationship between each other while men like to say what they want to say. Keywords: speech style, language and gender, woman and man’s language

Abstract

Acquiring second language is not easy for the learners because they have to learn more about the rules of sentence structure in second language. Makingerror in acquiring second language is inevitable because the learners still use therules in their first language to transfer second language. Therefore, errors wereconsidered as being the result of the persistence of existing mother tongue habitsin the new language. This study is to investigate the students’ errors in descriptiveparagraph made by the first grade students of SMA N 4 Malang. The studentsoften make errors when they write a descriptive paragraph. The problems of thisstudy are what types of error found and what sources of error found in descriptiveparagraph. Meanwhile, the objectives of this study are to identify and classify thetypes of error found and to investigate the sources of error found. The method of this study is qualitative approach. This study was carriedout at SMA N 4 Malang. The populations of this study were the first gradestudents of SMA N 4 Malang in academic year of 2012/2013. The classes thatwere used as the sample were three classes in the first grade that were taught bythe same teacher. The technique used to analyze the data of this study is using thetheory of error analysis proposed by Dulay et al (1982). The steps of analyzingdata are collecting the data, identifying the error, describing the error, explainingthe error, and drawing the conclusion. The result of the study showed that based on surface strategy taxonomy, there were (37%) omissions errors,(21%) additions, (38%) misformations, and(4%) misorderings. Misformations error is the highest error occurred. The resultfor the sources of errors were interlingual transfer (18%), intralingual transferdivided in to four parts source of error, there were (9%) for overgeneralization, 1error for ignorance of rule restrictions, (22%) for incomplete application of rules,(40%) for false concept hypothesized, and (11%) for communication strategies.  This study is useful for the students and the teacher; it helps the teacher toknow the problems of the students in their writing. It is suggested that the firstgrade students of SMA N 4 Malang should be given intensive exercises on thecorrect structure in their writing and improve their writing to learn secondlanguage to know their mistake. Abstract

Verbal communication is one of important parts of human‟s life. Onestudy that deals with verbal communication is pragmatics. Pragmatics talksabout people‟s intended meaning, their assumption, their purpose or goals andalso the kind of action. This study attempts to analyze pragmatically theconversational  implied meaning or simply called implicature on the dialogueof Euro Trip movie based on Grice‟s Cooperative Principle and its maxims. The main objective of this study is to discover how utterance can go beyond itsliteral meaning by the disobeying or flouting of some principles by the speakerin dialogue because flouting maxims particularly salient way of getting anaddressee to draw an inference and hence recovers an implicature or impliedmeaning. There are three research problems being observed namely: (1) Whatare the implicatures that occur in dialogue of Euro Trip movie (2) What type ofconversational implicature in the dialogue in the movie entitled Euro Trip (3)What is the function of the implicature. The research design of the study is qualitative approach which employscontent analysis. The type of implicaturethat occur are generalized and particularized implicature. Implicatures in thisdialogue have four types of particular function named representative, directive, expressive and commissive. Abstract
