Abstract

Subordination of women always happens in a patriarchal society.Patriarchy is a system by the power of men which always regard women as beingweak. This results in unfairness to women's rights. Women often become objectsthat are humiliated and harassed, the actions they do were always limited. Theimpact of this injustice makes some women move to fight subordination of them. This phenomenon is reflected in one of the biography film "The Iron Lady" thatelevates the struggle of a woman to be a leader in a world dominated by men. The study aims at revealing the struggle of Margaret Thatcher against thesubordination of women that is reflected in the film. The writer examines Margaret Thatcher's oppression and struggle throughthe lens of feminism that focuses on women's issues, one of which is due to thepatriarchal system. The elements of mise-en-scene in the film was alsoimplemented to see other forms of oppression and the struggle associated with the arrangement of setting, costume, lighting, and other elements. From the analysis, it is known that because of the patriarchal system that isformed by society, women must experience gender discrimination. However, "TheIron Lady" indicates that there are contra actions of women to gain genderequality as shown by Margaret Thatcher, as the main character, in which she triedto fight for her rights. They are included getting higher education, making her own decision, becoming a strong leader, and also involving and politics. To achieve her dream as a career woman, she managed to break the low assumption about women that are weak, ignorant, and passive. The writer would like to give some suggestion for the next researchers.First, next researchers need to conduct further research on the analysis reveals the important things in it, because this film can still be analyzed by using the other theory of literature, such as capitalism. It would be an interesting study for the next researchers that can be observed the difference in social status between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat can affect the right to be a leader.. The second possibility is then can use the same theory that is feminism for other materials.Hopefully researchers will next get a different conclusion using the same theory. Keywords: Struggle, subordination, feminism, The Iron Lady.

Meanwhile, there is still have the most frequently learning strategy that have been used by the students, from the six types of learning strategies that is metacognitive strategy. The writer suggests the English lecturers can help the students to understand more about the importance of language learning strategies, or give the students training to be able to apply them in the learning activity. Further researchers are also suggested to use other variables of individual differences of language learning strategy in conducting research. Keywords : language learning strategies, international class students, Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire.

Abstract

Abstract

(2) What types of politeness strategies are performed by Carl in conversat ion occurring in the movie “UP”?This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear andsystematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study intextual analysis is applied in this study to analyze conversation of the main character through the script of UP movie. The theory used by the writer is Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. This study reveals that all of the faces, both positive and negative faces, arebeing threatened. The politeness strategies are also applied in the conversation, all the four types of politeness strategies, namely bald on-record politeness strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record, were embodied by Carl. The writer suggests students of Study Program of English conduct the deeperstudy about politeness strategies and FTA. Abstract

Yogyakarta is one of the places where Javanese language is developed. The language is used from generations to generations. People say that Yogyakarta is the real Java city. However, the slang of Javanese is also developed in this place. It is known as Boso Walikan Yogya or Boso Prokem. This Javanese slang is a kind of modifications of ngoko Javanese which is reversed in the Javanese writing order. In this study, the researcher identified; (1) What the Javanese slang words used by street vendors in Malioboro are; (2) What the characteristics of Javanese slang used by street vendors in Malioboro are; (3) How the social context of Javanese slang is reflected in street vendors’ daily conversation. The respondents were 26 street vendors in Malioboro aged 30-60 yearsold. The researcher proposed qualitative approach to describe the phenomena of Javanese slang and the answer of the research problems. The type of the study was case study because the researcher needed to do deep investigation about the usage of Javanese slang in street vendors’ daily conversations. There were 105 Javanese slang words used by the street vendors inMalioboro. The researcher gave additional explanation about the meaning of each word to make the data are clearer. The Javanese slang words found are varied and can be used freely, unfortunately, some of them are rude and vulgar therefore the speaker needs to know about the hearer and situation around them as well. Characteristics of the words are creative, flippant, fresh, and short lived. The Javanese slang is used to conceal some topics, such as money, the street vendors’ children, food and beverage, and also people and condition around. In this study, the researcher focused on the slang words, the characteristics of slang, and how the social context of Javanese slang is reflected in street vendors’ interaction. The researcher suggests the next researcher who wants to conduct similarresearch to understand the theory of sociolinguistics, especially the theory related to slang. Furthermore, the next researcher can investigate another aspect of slang, such as the reason of slang usage, and the comparison between slang differences to be the next case study.

The writer used qualitative approach because the writer collected the data in the form of words. The writer uses a transcription of Pesbukers reality show. She decided the utterances that are categorized into FTA strategies, and identified the intended meaning of the utterances based on Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987).The results of this study showed there were 12 utterances containing flouting maxim of relevance produced by the hosts and the guest stars. Those utterances were conforming Brown and Levinson’s theory (1987) of FTA strategies. There were three strategies used in Pesbukers reality show that werepositive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The mostly used strategy was positive politeness which was shown by noticing the speakers’ interest, seeking an agreement to make a deal, and avoiding disagreement. The second strategy was negative politeness. The hosts and guest stars used negative politeness to minimize the imposition to others. The last strategy was off record. Mostly, they used off record by using an irony to tease each other. The writer suggests the further researcher conduct a research about FTAstrategies focusing on certain strategy for example positive politeness in any other subjects, such as movies, comics, magazines, speeches, dramas and so forth in order to have deeper analysis. Keywords: Flouting maxim, flouting maxim of relevance, face threatening act strategies
