Abstract

Background : The purpose of this research was to know the relationship between obesity and irregularity menstrual cycle. Methods: This was an analytic observational study with cross sectional approach, using purposive sampling technique. The samples were 76 women, 20 – 35 years-old from Minomartani Village, Ngaglik, Sleman. Body Mass Index (BMI) data were obtained by measuring the height and weight, while the type of menstrual cyle by interview, on April 2012. Data were analyzed by Chi Square and Odds Ratio test. Results: Thirty women had BMI more than 25 kg/m2 (obese) and fourty six women had BMI between 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 (normal). The Chi Square test showed the value of p was 0.035 (p < 0.05), while the Odds Ratio test showed that value of OR was 3.154 (OR>1). Conclusions: There was significant relationship between obesity and irregularity menstrual cycle in fertile women in Minomartani village, Ngaglik, Sleman. Keywords: Obesity, Menstrual Cycle

Abstract

Background: White dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) contains antioxidant substances in the form of vitamin A, C, E, and polyphenol that are reported to be nephroprotective. This study was aimed to verify the effect of white dragon fruit extract and its increasing doses toward paracetamol-induced damage of renal cell of mouse (Mus musculus). Methods: This study was a Randomized Controlled Trial in design. Samples were twenty eight Swiss webster type mice divided into 4 groups randomly, being seven mice in each group. Aquades were administered to mice in control group (KK) and the first group (KP1), while white dragon fruit extract were administered to the second group (KP2) and the third group (KP3) with the dose of 70 mg/20 g BB weight and 140 ml/20 g weight for 14 days, respectively. Paracetamol were administered to KP1, KP2, KP3, with dose 5.07 mg/ 20 g weight on day 12th, 13th and 14th. On day 15th, mice were sacrificed with neck dislocation. Renal cell slides were made and stained by HE. Renal histological is analysed and scored base on quantification of renal histological damage. Data were analyzed by One-Way ANOVA test and Post Hoc test. Results: One-Way ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference between groups. Result of LSD method showed that there were significant of differences between KK-KP1, KK-KP2, KP1-KP2, KP1-KP3 and KP2-KP3 groups, respectively; while no significant different was found between KK-KP3. Conclusion: The administration of white dragon fruit extract might prevent the mice renal cell damage. The increasing doses of white dragon fruit extract induce protection effect towards the renal cell damage of mice induced by paracetamol Key words : white dragon fruit extract, paracetamol, renal cell damage.

Abstract

Background: Antioxidants in white dragon fruit are vitamin A, C, E, and polyphenol which are estimated having hepatoprotective function. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of ethanol extract of white dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) to the histological damage of the hepar cells of mice (Mus musculus) induced by paracetamol. Methods : This research was Randomized Controlled Trial design with sample of 28 Swiss Webster mice, male, 2-3 months old, and ±20 grams of weight each. The sample was divided into 4 groups by randomization. The control group (KK) and the treatment group 1 (KP1) were fed aquadest orally 0,3 ml/20 g body weight a day for 14 days. The treatment group 2 (KP2 ) and 3 (KP3) were fed 70 and 140 mg/20 g body weight the extract of white dragon fruit a day for 14 days. On the 12th to 14th days, mice of KP1, KP2, and KP3 were treated by 5,07 mg paracetamol per 20 g body weight. On the 15th day, hepars of mice were taken and stainned with HE for histopathological study. The hepar cells of mice were observed microscopically by counting the number of necrosis cells on the centrolobuler zone. The data were analyzed by Oneway ANOVA test and Post Hoc test. Results: The average damage of hepar cells in the KK, KP1, KP2, KP3 was 21,79±2,69; 63,79±6,41; 32,07±2,97; 19,36±1,91 consecutively. The results of Oneway ANOVA test showed a significant difference in all group (p<0.001). The results of Post Hoc test showed significant differences between KK-KP1, KK-KP2, KP1-KP2, KP1-KP3, KP2-KP3 with p<0.001, except KK-KP3 with p=0.06. Conclusions : The ethanol extract of white dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) can prevent the histological damage of the hepar cells of mice (Mus musculus) induced by paracetamol. Keywords : ethanol extract of white dragon fruit, paracetamol, damage of hepar cells
