Abstract

The goal of this study was to gather empirical data and examine how the Duolingo application was used by the seventh-grade students at MTSN 4 Rokan Hulu to increase their vocabulary mastery. The students were participated in a quasi-experimental research design and were divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group. 131 students made up the entire population, and purposive sampling was used to obtain the sample. As a result, VII B served as the control class and VII A as the experimental class. There were 32 students in the experimental class and 30 in the control group. Vocabulary mastery test and observations were served as the data collecting tools. The test was administered twice. By using a significance level of 0.05, the data analysis findings indicate that the value of t-table was 3.476. It is greater than the value of t-table, which is 1.671. In conclusion, using the Duolingo application to improve the seventh-grade students’ vocabulary mastery at the school had a substantial impact.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether there is a significant influence between students' speaking ability before and after being taught by using the cake learning application. This research was quantitative. The design of this research was a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test design and post-test design. The research used one class as the sample of the research by using a convenience sampling technique which the total of sample were 33 students. To collect data, the researcher used a test to determine students' speaking ability. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a paired t test by using SPSS version 25. The results of data analyzed showed that the mean score of students after being taught by using the Cake Learning Application (78.24) was higher than before being taught by using the Cake Learning Application (57.64). It can be concluded that there was an influence between students' speaking ability before and after being taught by using the cake learning application. Keywords: Cake Learning Application, speaking

Abstract

A number of studies have investigated the EFL students’ speaking performance, however, little is known about the mental processes behind the L2 speech production, meanwhile understanding their route of thought could be instrumental in comprehending key factors of their success as well as their failure. The study is expected to reveal some information about the thinking process undertaken by the EFL learners' oral performance in various social settings. The participants of the study were the first-year pre-service students from a state university in Indonesia. Data of the study were elicited through retrospective verbal reports, interviews, and questionnaires based on the role-play of eight scenarios of complaining performance. Through qualitative data analysis, a framework by Levelt (1999) was used to guide the analysis of speech production. The findings revealed that L2 speech production follow several phases, namely, macroplanning, microplanning, grammatical encoding, morphophonological encoding, phonetic encoding, articulation, and monitoring. It seems that L2 speech production is similar to L2 speech production. In addition, it was revealed that the flow of speech processing was not determined by the level of proficiency alone, as a formal speech situation was reported took more thoughtful consideration than a casual one which could likely run fast and automatically.

Abstract

This research was conducted because some problems were faced by students in reading, especially in metacognitive reading strategy and reading comprehension. The problems were: most of the students are lazy to read the text, most of them feel bored when studied English especially in reading the text, most of them still have less metacognitive strategy in reading text, and most of them have low ability in reading comprehension. The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between metacognitive reading strategy and reading comprehension at second year of SMA Serirama YLPI. This research was a quantitative research. The population of this research was all of the students at second year. The total number of population was 30 students.Total sampling is the best way to obtain a representative sample. The instruments were questionnaire and test. Person product moment correlation coefficient was used to analyze the  data. The result so this research showed that the coefficient correlation was0.109 and the p-value was (0.565) which was greater than 0.05 (0.565 > 0.05). It means that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. Based on the result of the research it could be concluded that there was no statistically significant correlation between students’ metacognitive reading strategy and reading comprehension at second year of SMA Serirama YLPI Pekanbaru.

Abstract

AbstractGoogle Translate (GT) becomes one of familiar tools used in translation subject. This research investigates the different of using GT on students’ translation tasks and explores the advantages and disadvantages of using GT in translating texts. This research referred to mixed method design. The subjects of the research were 57 students of fourth semester. To collect the data, the researcher used tests and questionnaires. The quantitative data were analysed by using independent sample t-test, while qualitative analysis was used for another data. It was found that there was a significant different in students’ translation results after using Google Translate. Then, from the open-ended questionnaire, it was found that there were advantages of Google Translate such as quick and easy learning, portability and time savings, while the disadvantages were less accurate translation, grammatical structure error and network problem. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of Google Translate was beneficial for translating texts, but the students are suggested to recheck the results for a better translation form. Keywords: Google Translate; tool; translating
