Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of crude extracts of betelnut, derris root, or wild heliotrope on the feeding response of two slug species, Filicaulis bleekeri and Parmarion pupillaris. Feeding test was performed in Petri dishes lined with wet white muslin by exposing 3 cm diameter leaf discs of treated -1 chinese cabbage with each extract (concentration of 50 g 100 ml water) to each slug species for 6 days. Control leaf discs were treated with water. Feeding response was measured by weighting leaf disc before and after 24 h feeding totaled into 6 days feeding period. Betel nut extract was further tested outdoor at the -1 concentration of 0 (control), 12.5, 25, and 50 g 100 ml . Filicaulis bleekeri (three slugs for each extract concentration) were released into each bucket and allowed to feed for 6 days. Percentages of leaf damage (consumed) by the slugs were measured at day 2, 4, and 6 after exposure. The results showed that crude extract of betelnut and derris root significantly reduced leaf feeding of F. blekeeri. The effect of betelnut extract was more pronounced than that of derris root. Wild heliotrope extract did not reduce slug feeding. Slug weight decreased in all treatments including control, but not on leaf treated with the heliotrope extract. There was no slug died from feeding on food treated with each extract. Theresponse of P. pupillaris was not conclusive. Betelnut extract reduced leaf damage by F. bleekeri significantly until day four after exposure.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of fortified foods on nutrition consumption and haemoglobin (Hb) status of pregnancy. This study was conducted in three sub-districts, i.e., Leuwiliang, Leuwisadeng and Ciampea. The 140 pregnant mothers from these sub-districts were selected for this study. From 140 pregnant mothers, 70 pregnant mothers were selected to receive fortified foods with multi-nutrients i.e. iron, iodine, zinc, folic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin A, for 6 months and 70 pregnant mothers did not receive any experimental food (control). Product selected as intervention carrier consisted of vermicelli, milk, and biscuit. The results of the study showed:(a) Compliance level of product feeding: bihun 90.72%, biscuit 94.64%, and milk 93.61%, (b) Intervention could improve nutrition consumption and fulfill energy 104% RDA, protein 80.7% iron 98.6% RDA, vitamin A 131% RDA, vitamin C 152.1% RDA, (c) intervention could reduceprevalence of anemia as much as 30% compare with control.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of genetic composition of quails (Coturnix-coturnic japonica) resulted from crosses among quails originated from three provinces (Bengkulu, Padang, and Yogyakarta) on quality of male quails carcass. Genetic compositions were used as treatments, including P 1 (50% Bengkulu, 25% Padang, 25% Yogyakarta), P (50% Padang, 25% Bengkulu, 2 25% Yogyakarta), P (50% Yogyakarta, 25% Bengkulu, 25% Padang), P (100% 3 4 Bengkulu), P (100% Padang), P (100% Yogyakarta). Treatments with 292 5 6 unsexed day old quails were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design with seven replicates. Results demonstrated that genetic compositions affected body weight, carcass weight, breast length and wide, and meat bone ratio (P

Abstract

A research has been done to know effects of orange skin extract on mortality, development, fecundity, and fertility of the cabbage pest Crocidolomia pavonana. The results performed that purut extract could kill 26.67% larvae in laboratory condition, decrease feeding activity, inhibit feeding up to 44.70%, rd th increase developmental time of the 3 and 4 larval instars until 7.00 and 6.67 days. Tested extracts reduced numbers of pupae and adults emerged up to 73.33-85 and 68.33-78.33%. The purut orange skin extract was the most effective to decrease egg fertility and fecundity of female moths.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing customer, product engineering competitive assessment, and operational strategy for increasing small industrial product quality performance of dangke traditional special food on the fulfillment of consumer need and desire. The research used analysis tool of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to describe structured mechanism in deciding consumer need. QFD consisted of monitor and right control operational process. Result of the research showed that there were three attributes used for mainly consideration to consume dangke, i.e., aroma, taste, and price. Performance of the industry was satisfy enough for cow dangke and satisfy for water buffalo one. Price and package was the most critical attribute and needed to be developed and managed seriously. Economical production cost without decreasing its quality was needed to product cheaper dangke reached by consumer. The use of good and attractive package would give positive value of the product so that the consumer could pay it with higher pricewithout decreasing satisfaction value received. Smaller package of the product (economical package) would give reachable price per unit. Package with leaves needed to be modified or changed with polypropylene plastic or aluminum foil one because it could protect water transpiration, texture, and color.

Abstract

Fermentation in this research was aimed to reduce, remove or recover unpleasant smell and taste of noni juice. The treatment factors were combination of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts, consisting of Lactobacillus acidophillus: Saccharomyces cerevisiae (K1), L. acidophillus: Kluyveromyces marxianus (K2), L. casei: S. cerevisiae (K3) and L. casei: K. marxianus (K4), with fermentation times of 0, 3, 5, and 7 days. The result of this research were: different combination of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts caused significantly decreased of pH and increased of alcohol content, but not significant on the vitamin C content. The biggest decreased on the pH resulted from L. casei: K. marxianus (K4), on the other hand the biggest increased on the alcohol content resulted from L. acidophilus: K marxianus (K2). During fermentation, decrease of pH, vitamin C content and increase on the alcohol content were significant, resulted in the 0 and 3 days of fermentation. The counts of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts increased during 3 days fermentation but after this reduction. Sensory test showed that combination of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts and fermentation times were significant to the odor, flavour, taste and preference. Combination of L. acidophilus: K marxianus (K2) with 5 days fermentation resulted in the best of the noni juice preference.
