Abstract

Batur sheep (Ovis aries) is one of the Indonesian native sheep that originated from Banjarnegara Regency. This study aimed to detect the FecXE allele of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 15 (BMP15) in Batur ewes using the sequencing method. A total of six (6) Batur ewes were randomly selected for investigation. The results showed that three (3) ewes were detected as carrier animals (FecX+/ FecXE), and the other ewes were wild-type animals (FecX+/FecX+). Unfortunately, this study did not observe a mutant animal (FecXE/FecXE). It can be concluded that the presence of the FecXE allele in Batur ewes may affect the prolificacy trait since previous studies reported that heterzygous ewes have the largest litter size traits than in wild-type ewes. Abstract

Australia's modern Brahman Cross (BX) cattle industry is based on animal welfare. The importation of BX cattle will be bound by the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) regulations. This study aimed to evaluate current increased price and fattening cost of feeder BX cattle along with ESCAS additional cost on the price of slaughtered cattle and their welfare. Based on the animal welfare assessment, while in the feedlot for 120 days were considered good, with the average value in the first month 86.4%, the second 88.5%, the third 92.14%, and the fourth 94.29%. Based on the calculations Activity Based Costing (ABC) method, it is known that procurement costs, including the purchase of feeders, contributed to 94% of the total costs, while other costs were handling costs 2.7%, cost of ESCAS 1.56%, selling cost 1.52%, and the lowest, maintenance cost 0.24%. Therefore, to fatten Australian BX cattle, special strategies are needed, such as: optimizing stock in the feedlot; efficiency cost in feed ingredients without reducing quality; applying animal welfare rules to minimize handling costs, and selecting vendors who want the lower price in providing ESCAS support facilities and establishing regular maintenance of the ESCAS supporting tools.

Abstract

Stocking density gives a significant role in poultry farming, with increasing the number of birds per unit space potentially leading to higher profits. The wider the pen will increase the need litter for pen, rice hulls are commonly used as litter. Limited supplies, higher costs, and unavailability of suitable materials have encouraged the search for alternative litter materials. This study aimed to identify ideal stocking density and other litter material sources on native chickens. The material of this study was 324-day old chick (DOC) native chickens, reared for 10 weeks. The DOC was randomly divided into 9 treatment groups including a combination of 3 stocking densities (8, 12, and 16 chick/m2) and 3 litter materials (rice hulls, wood shavings, and corncobs) in 3 replication. A completely randomized factorial design was applied in the study then followed by Duncan's multiple range tests. The variables observed in this study were litter temperature, litter pH, water holding capacity, ammonia level, final weight, feed consumption, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio. The results showed that stocking density had only a significant effect (p

Abstract

Antibiotics Growth Promoter (AGP) are currently banned. Citrus leaves have active secondary metabolites that have the potential to be used as phytogenic feed additives. Many in vitro studies have reported the activity of lime leaves against E coli. Therefore, this study aims to integrate various studies in order to obtain comprehensive information on the activity of lime leaves against E coli with a meta-analysis. This research was conducted by collecting studies of citrus leaves from various species, origin, extraction methods, and different antibacterial test methods and comparing the treatment of citrus leaves with controls in inhibiting E coli by looking at the diameter of the inhibition zone. The results showed that kaffir lime leaves as an alternative phytogenic feed additive for AGP were effective in inhibiting E. coli. The inhibitory ability of E. coli bacteria was based on differences in the origin of lime leaves and extraction methods, while differences in levels, types of lime leaves, and antibacterial test methods did not affect the inhibition of E. coli. Citrus leaf extract at a low concentration of 5 mg/ml was able to inhibit E coli bacteria. Keywords: escherichia coli, lime leaf, meta-analysis

Abstract

The study aimed to determine the protein quality of the starter phase of free-range chicken feed added with BSF larvae and Indigofera zollingeriana. The ration materials used were commercial feed, yellow corn, rice bran, coconut cake, NaCl, maggot flour, Indigofera flour, CaCO3, premix, turmeric, and L-lysine, DL-methionine, H2SO4, and NaOH. The study used quantitative descriptive analysis by comparing the protein quality and amino acid composition in commercial feeds. The composition of the research ration was P0 = commercial feed, P1 = basal diet + 5% Indigofera flour + 25% maggot flour + 2.5% turmeric flour, P2 = basal diet + 10% Indigofera flour + 20% maggot flour + 2.5% turmeric powder. The results obtained chemical scores, namely P0 (amino acid cysteine = 65.52%), P1 (methionine = 71.79%), and P2 (cysteine = 68.97%) with methionine and cysteine as limiting amino acids. The essential amino acid index values were P0 = 127.96, P1 = 129.62, and P2 = 114.52. the study concluded that the combination of P1 treatment (basal ration, 5% Indigofera flour, 25% maggot flour, and 2.5% turmeric flour) could be used as poultry feed to optimize protein requirements in feed.
