Abstract

The main aim of this study is to explain the quality of translation of Garuda Magazine from English into Indonesian. The analysis concerns on accuracy, clarity/clearness and naturalness of translation of Garuda Magazine from English into Indonesian. The research method uses qualitative descriptive and the type of research is content analysis. This research takes the section “Welcome on Board” page 12 on Garuda Magazine November 2008 edition as source of data. The result of the research shows that 3 data (15,79%) are less accurate and 84,21% or 16 sentences are accurate; 3 data (15,79 %) are less clear and 84,21% or 16 sentences are clear; 5,26 % or 1 sentence is unnatural, 36,84 % or 7 sentences are less natural and 57,90 % or 11 sentences are natural.

Abstract

Critical thinking may be considered as an essential substance contributing to the success of students learning a language, in this English. Some skills in English such as listening, speaking, reading and writing can be successfully achieved whenever students were critical, since critical thinking is also the ability allowing the students to express everything freely. Unfortunately, utilizing critical thinking is not as simple as seen. There should be a regular and consistent process done to encourage the students to be critical. Thus, some approaches, methods, techniques or media need to be applied in order to succeed the achievement of being critical thinkers. Thus, this paper reveals some theories and practices based on reviewing some articles of critical thinking in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Abstract

Over the last few decades, many instructors have been trying all kinds of teaching methods, but without benefit. Nevertheless, in the 1986, a new technique is appeared which called K-W-L technique. It is specified for reading comprehension passages because reading skill is not easy matter for students. Therefore, the K-W-L technique is a good one for thinking and experiences. The outcomes of present research appeared that K-W-L enables the students to activate their prior knowledge and operate their thinking.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to describe teaching daily speaking by using telephone through question and answer technique, (2) to describe the advantages and disadvantages of teaching daily speaking by using telephone through question and answer technique to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun in the schooling year of 2013/2014.In this research, the researcher takes five students of 1B from the Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun as the sample. The researcher uses purposive sampling technique. To get the data, the researcher uses observation, interview, and documentation. In this research, analysis data is done by using descriptive analysis qualitative.The results of the research are: (1) the use of telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun is divided into three steps, namely pre- activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity, (2) The advantages of using  telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking to the first grade students of Department of English Teaching IKIP PGRI Madiun are: the use of telephone through question and answer technique in teaching daily speaking can increase students’ scores, it makes enjoyable learning, students can focus on teaching learning process, the students have a good chance to practice with their friends in the group. This makes them more active in learning speaking, Last, the use of telephone through question and answer technique increases the students’ confidence. Meanwhile, the disadvantages are: the class becomes noisy when the students practice with their friends in the group, and some students have low vocabularies so that the students can not speak fluently.
