Abstract

The Internet might have been manypeople's best friends but there are also people who are still in the introduction stage of using the Internet. The Internet might become hype for them that they are not aware yet of the potentials and the harms lurking behind the glitters of the Internet. Thus, this paper is meant to provide general information on both the positive and negative side of the Internet in terms of educational context.Worshipping the Internet or having a skeptical position toward the Internet is two extremes that should be avoided. The Internet users should be critical and wise in using this piece of technology. In other words, they need to become 'informed' users of the Internet. Therefore, some possible solutions are also presented in this paper in order to make the best use of its potentials while focusing every effort to minimize its harms.

Abstract

The fact that English teachers in Indonesia especially in remote area are under qualified is not debatable/They are not only incapable of teaching well but quite a lot of them also still need help in their English proficiency. Asking them to take an English class for them is almost impossible. There must be ways of developing their professionalism while they are performing as teachers.Building a cooperative learning group for English teacher will make them improved in both the knowledge and skills in teaching because of the very slogan of cooperative learning, which is "sink and swim together". Each group will be responsible for the improvement of all members because their success is determined by the success of' the group and the group also determines the success of the individual. This movement will be much more effective if it is used as one of the criteria of kenaikan pangkat.

Abstract

Translation is an effort of finding equivalent meaning of a text into the second language. We emphasis meaning equivalence since in translation meaning is the object to be rendered from the source language text into the target language text. In this case, translator is faced with a text as units of meaning in the form of sets of words or sentences.The main question in translation is of meaning which always appears in the process of translation, not translation as a product of the process. Translating a text from the source text(ST) must consider the closest natural equivalent meaning, it implies that the meaning of the target text must be equivalent with that of the source.Meaning is classified into two kinds, referential meaning and connotative meaning. A translator must be aware of which meaning is possibly intended by the author.  Beside, it should also be paid attention on the components embedded in a certain unit of meaning. By understanding the components of meaning of the source language expressions a translator can make the best decision related to the components.

Abstract

Choosing what language to use and what cultural values to adopt may be problematic for international students undertaking cross-border studies in the U.S. This –problem occurs simply because the students bring with them the various cultural values and beliefs, and language-related identities with them in a new linguistic environment. This paper aims at identifying the major patterns of language use among Indonesian students in the U.S. and the reasons of Indonesian students in choosing particular languages in conversations.The study involved eighteen Indonesian students undertaking master and doctoral studies in some American universities. The survey and interview methods are used to gather the data. The results of the survey and interview disprove my previous prediction that the inter-or intrapersonal mechanism, such as community or institutional norms, accommodation, politeness, physical condition such as fatigue or laziness, and rationality may determine the speakers' language choices. This study indicated that that Indonesians in the U.S. might be aware of the importance of influences such as, cultural values that may directly or indirectly impact the language preference, and some unpredictable and violable arrangements for language choice, such as exclusion/inclusion of others in addition to the apparent communal perception of English as the accepted institutional and social password in the U.S. Additionally, I learned that the students' multilingual strategy was reflected in. their ability to 'play safe' in using the languages in multilingual interactions, by selecting the most comfortable languages in conversations without neglecting others who were within their earshot.

Abstract

Globalisation brings a great impact on the use of English in any domains like business, education, IT and the like. English has become lingua franca one chooses to communicate with others having a different language. English has spread worldwide and this phenomenon has resulted in English teaching learning in primary level in many non- English-speaking countries. This brings a consequence to a crucial need in teachers' education. Teachers at the primary level need to develop both competence in English use and teaching skills to young learners regarding their special characteristics. Theories in  children development is needed by teachers to meet the special needs of children. One method suggested to meet those needs through songs" Songs help children to internalize some words and sentences in the new language. Songs also provide a link with their everyday lives and be fun. Songs can be used at any level of ages at any stage in a lesson. In the beginning of a lesson songs can be used to mark the change from one topic to another. Songs can be a break from another more concetrate activity in the middle of a lesson and used to round a lesson of the end.

Abstract

The case of Manokwari English teachers shows great challenge. There are at least two main problems: number and quality. The gap between the availability and the need of English teachers at Manokwari is huge. This rarity gives tremendous impact to quality. Some schools just picked any available teachers to teach English regardless the existence of their English background. This paper is aimed at (1) describing the condition of Papua English teacher especially from Manokwari regency, (2) offering some solutions for the condition.

Abstract

Translating does not seem to be a trouble-free work. There are abundant tricks, strategies and adaptations to meet the need of being called 'sufficient' translation and thus it provides similar responses of the readers and brings about similar 'soul' of the original text. Translation works comprise many values and objectives of its author and the text itself. Not only is it a matter of transferring ideas or stories into other languages, but also a process of transferring culture, ideology, politics and social messages of the original text. This paper will discuss translation methods/strategies (the terms will be used interchangeably in this paper) that may be applied by the Indonesian translator in translating "Sophie's World" as well as investigate the values that are embedded in the translation version as compared to the original text. Two-page-alternative translations will also be offered as another option of applying translation methods.

Abstract

Sometimes literature is redarded as a subject that must be in avoidance position. On other hand, there are some advantages of studying literature; it assist students to acquire a habit of observation, a sensivity to the unsaid but implied, an ability to step outside of the student own perspective to understand the perception of others.
