Abstract

As one of the strategic means of enhancing future competence and career, every individual, including teachers, is strongly encouraged to pursue a higher degree. Nevertheless, lack of financial ability may become one of the debilitating hindrances for the teachers to pursue a higher degree, mainly overseas. Currently, however, the Indonesian Government strives to support Indonesians to pursue a higher degree through a scholarship mechanism called the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education, or popularly called as LPDP. Simultaneously, various scholarship mechanisms are also offered by several governing bodies in national or international contexts, such as Australia Awards, Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD, and many others. Therefore, this community empowerment project aims to enhance the understanding of schoolteachers, student-teachers, and other education communities regarding the administrative and technical preparation to register for a scholarship and prepare for overseas study. Moreover, the participants were also expected to comprehend the academic and social conditions while studying abroad, as well as the impact of pursuing a higher degree in their future competence and career. 535 participants were attending this community empowerment program in total.

Abstract

Abstract

Choosing what language to use and what cultural values to adopt may be problematic for international students undertaking cross-border studies in the U.S. This –problem occurs simply because the students bring with them the various cultural values and beliefs, and language-related identities with them in a new linguistic environment. This paper aims at identifying the major patterns of language use among Indonesian students in the U.S. and the reasons of Indonesian students in choosing particular languages in conversations. The study involved eighteen Indonesian students undertaking master and doctoral studies in some American universities. The survey and interview methods are used to gather the data. The results of the survey and interview disprove my previous prediction that the inter-or intrapersonal mechanism, such as community or institutional norms, accommodation, politeness, physical condition such as fatigue or laziness, and rationality may determine the speakers' language choices. This study indicated that that Indonesians in the U.S. might be aware of the importance of influences such as, cultural values that may directly or indirectly impact the language preference, and some unpredictable and violable arrangements for language choice, such as exclusion/inclusion of others in addition to the apparent communal perception of English as the accepted institutional and social password in the U.S. Additionally, I learned that the students' multilingual strategy was reflected in. their ability to 'play safe' in using the languages in multilingual interactions, by selecting the most comfortable languages in conversations without neglecting others who were within their earshot.

Abstract

This paper supports an idea that humor has a significant role in increasing the English learners' communicative competence. It is very common for teachers to present humor in English classrooms, whether it is purposely presented or spontaneously practiced in classroom activities. Yet, regardless of its significant contribution in language learning activities, it is highly likely that humor is one point that remains untouched in language learning. How many English textbooks containing humor in it? We hardly ever find any syllabi purposefully present the ability of students to tell or to understand jokes. Telling jokes in a serious classroom maybe considered as something inappropriate as it may distract the classroom activities. Therefore, spontaneous humor may sometimes be viewed as an 'off task' behavior. However, it is sometimes forgotten that understanding other people's joke may be one of the keys of understanding other cultures, and ,more importantly, building a relationship with people from other countries.

Abstract

Modern-time workplaces have become increasingly international and multilingual due to the presence of workers from different ethnicities, languages, and cultural backgrounds.  Due to the lack of training programs that are mainly focused on developing communication skills, security officers have faced challenges in communicating with clients, especially those who work in multilingual workplaces. This research aims to investigate the challenges of the workers in communicating in a multilingual workplace and exploring the perceived needs of the workers. This research was conducted in Jababeka Area Industries Jakarta. The research found various challenges and needs faced by the security officers including challenges with their occupational standing, limited training, inadequate workplace support system, and limited access and resources for learning. The security officers realize that the ultimate goal of communication in foreign language in the workplace is not merely shown by correctness and perfection, but how messages are transferred and how instructions are understood.
