Abstract

This writing is a minor report of a descriptive research conducted to know the level of students’ Speaking anxiety at English Classroom in Agroecotechnology Department of Agricultural Faculty, to find out the causes of the students’ speaking anxiety and to describe the students’ strategies in solving the speaking anxiety problems. In this study, method of the research is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected through questionnaire (using Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale that designed by Horwitz et al) and semi structured interview. The researchers chose 2A of Agroecotechnology Class as the subject of this research.   Further, the data analysis used in this research done through data reduction, data analysis and data display (qualitatively). To check the credibility of the data (trustworthiness), the researchers used triangulation on technique. The finding of this research would be meaningful contribution for the researchers as the lecturers of English in Agricultural Faculty to apply certain strategy in solving the students’ speaking anxiety problem in joining English class. Keywords: Agroecotechnology department; English classroom; Speaking Anxiety;

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to know the empirical evidence about the effect of using video on students’ writing ability in descriptive text. In this research, the writer conducts a quasi-experimental research with nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. In the nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design, the dependent variable is measured both before and after treatment or intervention. In the research used two instruments which are used for gathered the data that the researcher needs; they are; pre-test and post-test as the research instruments to collect the data. Test is used in order to know the difference achievement between experiment class and controlled class after the treatment was given. The method in this study was a quantitative method. The writer used formula to analyze the effect using video in teaching and to take the data. The data required are the curriculum used by the school, the information of the English teaching learning activity condition, the books are used in the teaching learning activity, and the students’ test answers on writing skill given by the writer as the researcher. The result of the research showed that the value of t˳ is higher than tt, so the Research Hypothesis (H) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (H˳) is rejected. Based on the result above, it can be concluded that the effect of video on students’ writing ability in descriptive text. Thus, it means that the learning writing descriptive using video was successful in improving students’ ability. Keywords :  Descriptive text, writing skill, Video

Abstract

After her losing in United States presidential election on November, 8th 2016, Hillary Clinton delivered an amazing and encouraging concession speech for all audiences around the world. One factor attributing to Hillary's success in a speech is that she has skillfully applied the variety of rhetorical devices. In accordance with this fact, this research tried to analyze the rhetorical devices and their respective function applied in the Hillary’s speech by using Harris’ theory. By watching the speech record and reading the transcription, the researchers collected the data. Then, to describe the phenomena qualitative research design was used in this research and textual analysis is used as a research method. Moreover, this research is kind of library research. The result shows there are thirteen rhetorical devices that were applied in the speech. Regarding to emphasis rhetorical devices, Hillary frequently used a sentential adverb, alliteration, anaphora, conduplicatio, diacope and epistrophe. For association rhetorical devices, Hillary utilized antanagoge, antithesis, metaphor, and parallelism. For decoration rhetorical devices, Hillary tended to apply asyndeton, polysyndeton, and sententia. Emphasis rhetorical devices are the most repeatedly used in her concession speech. Hillary used emphasis rhetorical devices to directly emphasize her point and purpose and also making the points of the speech is distinctly and explicitly delivered to the audiences. Keywords: rhetorical devices; Hillary Clinton Concession Speech; United States Presidential Election.

Abstract

The main focus of this study is to describe the order of degree word and adjective (AdjDeg) or (DegAdj) in three languages; Indonesian, Javanese, and Sundanese. Specifically, the study looks at the similarities and differences of typological syntactic features in three languages. This research used descriptive qualitative research by using data which belong to Austronesian language families. The results showed that (1) the similarities and differences of the order of modifying phrase in Indonesian, Javanese, and Sundanese which have different features in order of word degree and adjective, some of the compositions are (AdjDeg), or (DegAdj), and both of them; (2) the similarities at the level of comparison, the composition that often occur is ‘lebih + adjective+ dari’ in  Indonesian language, ‘luweh + adjective + soko’ in Javanese language, or ‘leuwih + adjective + ti’ in Sundanese language; (3) at the level of superlative, the similarities of order of degree word in Indonesian language is ‘paling + adjective’, Javanese is ‘subject + paleng+ adjective + soko + object’ , Sundanese is ‘subject + pohara + adjective + na + ti + object. The difference, In Indonesian ‘Subject + ter + adjective’, Javanese language ‘subject + paleng + adjective’, Sundanese language, ‘subject +pang + adjective + na’; (4) On equative level, the similarities of equative, Indonesian language is ‘Subject + sama + Adjective + nya’, Javanese language, ‘subject + podho + adjective + e’, Sundanese is ‘subject + sarua + adjective + na’. The differences, Indonesian language, ‘Subject + Se + adjective’, Javanese language, ‘subject + adjective + e + podho’, Sundanese ‘subject + adjective + na +  sarua’. This research can be used as a reference in advanced research related to the typology in order of degree word and adjective with data from different language in Indonesian archipelago. Keywords : Syntactic Typology, Comparative, Superlative, and Equative

Abstract

The research aimed to (1) identify eighth-grade students’ learning needs of writing narrative text at SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang, and (2) develop appropriate materials for eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang. The subjects of this Research and Development study were students and teacher of SMP Negeri 3 Kota Serang. The research procedure was simplified and modified the steps from Borg and Gall (1983:775) and Jolly and Bolitho (cited in Tomlinson, 1998): conduct the needs analysis, write the course grid, develop the first draft, evaluate by expert judgments, revise, evaluate the second draft, and implement of the material. The data collection instruments were the needs analysis questionnaire, interview, and expert judgment questionnaire, which analyzed through percentage, mean followed by descriptive analysis's conversion and qualitative data analysis. The researchers found that both teacher and students wanted specific writing activities in the form of three units of printed comic material through design the layout and storyboard, sketch the characters, and draw and write the activity. The result of the first evaluation by two expert judgments showed the material was in range “fair”, “good” and “very good” while the second was in range “very good”.  The product offer creativity and interactivity for English teacher and another developer in the future. Keywords: narrative text, writing, comic material

Abstract

This paper reports a small part of the study which focuses on the use of genre pedagogy to the teaching of writing research proposal as one of academic texts in tertiary level. This study aims at finding out how genre pedagogy can empower students cognitively through their abilities in writing research proposal. A case study involving fifteen students in one university in Banten taking Research on ELT subject was conducted using classroom observation and related documents, such as researcher‟s field notes and students‟ journal. The classroom observation and related documents analysis result showed that the students were cognitively empowered through the teaching cycles of genre pedagogy through various activities which encouraged their cognitive processes. Thus, genre pedagogy can empower students cognitively through its various learning activities and texts examples.Keywords: academic writing; cognitive empowerment; genre pedagogy

Abstract

English has important function in every aspect in this era, especially in education side. Someone demanded to know the meaning and function of English word. So that, translation is also the other four skills in mastering English language, besides Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing, Translation is also has main function. The objectives of this research were to find out if the students commit translation in English Text, to describe the method which was applied by the students to translate the English text, to observe the students ability in translate the English text. Therefore, this study seemed very relevant to a case study because it attempted to investigate and explore the student’s strategies in one class of 23 students. In this research, the researcher applied test to the students. In technique of the test, the researcher gave the English text and asked the students to translated the English text as well as possible as they could. There are four criteria to assess the student’s translation, they are message content accuracy, message distinct, equivalences of using language and the last are mechanic appropriateness. The researcher also has done interviewed the translation lecturer regarded as the key of the informant who really knew how far the student’s ability to translate English text. The result of the interview was given to the teacher; showed 4th semester students still got lot of difficulties, they only used one technique in translate. Especially the words seldom their finds in the English lesson books. Furthermore, the lecturer should be creative by finding the appropriate method of translation for 4th semester students in translating English text into Indonesian language, and the lecturer also gives always motivation to the students that the text must understand with translate the source language into their target language exactly in Indonesian language. Meanwhile the students also needed longer time to practice in translating text from English text into Indonesian text because they don’t have right method and also lack of vocabulary in translating English text although the lecturer had already given exercise to practice of English text, but it was not enough to build students interest to practice translating English text.Keywords:  Translation; Students Translation Strategies and Method; Indonesian Text

Abstract

In this paper, the writers tried to analyze a ‘message’ that is delivered by the author. The purpose of this writing is to investigate how the author portrays ‘darkness of love’ through literary works. This research uses formulaic literature approach as the theory and methodology. It  contains the description,  analysis,  and  interpretation  of  these  data  supported  by  theories. By doing depth analysis of ‘hills like white elephant’s’ stories and its figurative language, the result showed that the phrase ‘darkness of love’ caused by forbidden love. Keywords: darkness of love, ernesthemingwa; formulaic literature; hills like white elephant

Abstract

This present study aims to explore the students’ perception of applying Randall’s ESL cyber listening lab in the interpretive listening class. To do so, 40 students in the second semester in a state university at Banten provience, Indonesia, took part in this study. This research implemented qualitative research method. Then the data analysed by using descriptive statistics. Data taken from questionnaire that distributed to 40 students. The questions in the questionnaire sheet consists of ten questions and divided into three part in order to achieve the maximum results about the students’ perception of using Randall’s ESL cyber listening lab. The results showed that option yes was chosen by most of the students as the samples of this study. It means that the students were agree that Randall’s ESL cyber listening lab gave positive effects in the teaching learning process in the language laboratory and can be used as one of the source in the listening class that make the listening class interesting and challenging. Moreover, Randall’s ESL cyber listening lab is really recommended for other teachers and students who want to learn listening in and out of the class room since in this research the students’ gave positive perception after applied the Randalls’ ESL cyber listening lab. Keywords: Listening Class; Randalls’ ESL Cyber Listening Lab; Students’ Perception

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the interactive effects of teaching technique, peer evaluation and reading habit towards student’s writing skill at Junior High School in Serang. In this research, the researcher used KTSP as the curriculum of the eighth grade of Junior High School in Serang. The research methodology is experiment. The writer got the data by giving questionnaire, treatment, and test. According to ANOVA table, teaching technique got Sig. 0.000 < 0.05. It means that hypothesis null (Ho) is denied and hypothesis alternative (H1) is accepted. So, there is a significant effect of teaching technique towards student’s writing skill. And for reading habit result got Sig. 0.000 < 0.05. It means that hypothesis null (Ho) is denied and hypothesis alternative (H1) is accepted. So, there is a significant effect of reading habit towards student’s writing skill. While for the interactive effects of teaching technique and reading habit got Sig. is 0.607 > 0.05, it means that hypothesis null (Ho) is accepted and hypothesis alternative (H1) is denied. So, there are not any significant interactive effects of teaching technique and reading habit towards student’s writing skill.Keywords : Conventional; Peer Evaluation; Reading Habit; and Writing Skill
