Abstract

Abstracts in journal articles serve to present brief and clear information regarding research which generally covers the issue raised, the objectives, the methodology used and findings of the research. Consequently, an abstract holds a notable function and is considered as the face of the journal because most readers read the abstract first before going on to read the full paper. The objective of this study was to qualitatively analyse and compare the rhetorical moves and genre development of abstracts in soft science research articles before and after training. Forty abstracts—20 abstracts before receiving an intervention and 20 abstracts after receiving an intervention—written by Indonesian scholars in the soft science field were employed as data. Hyland’s (2000) five-rhetorical move model was used to analyse the data. The findings reveal that there are differences and developments in the use of rhetorical moves in journal article abstracts after receiving an intervention. This study can be used as an overview or as a reference for future research in the discourse analysis field, especially the analysis of abstract. Keywords: abstract writing; moves analysis; genre development; discourse analysis.

Abstract

As the result of globalization, the English language teaching goals in many countries have shifted from communicative competence to intercultural communicative competence (ICC). However, among the small number of studies on ICC in Indonesia, most of them focus on ICC in the tertiary level which shows there is a gap of work in the secondary level of education. Thus, this article attempts to seek the truth about senior high school teachers’ understanding and beliefs as well as revealing their attempts in promoting ICC in the classroom. The case study was employed with two novice teachers as participants through interview and document analysis. The finding shows some interesting facts that both teachers viewed concept of ICC similarly as cross-cultural understanding in a way both to overcome misunderstanding and culture shock. Both teachers believed that language is culture bound, yet, only a very small trace of cultural aspects were shown in the documents; and as they viewed culture as dynamic, yet, the content being taught mainly covered static domain of culture.  Keywords: Byram’s five savoirs; culture education; intercultural communicative competence.

Abstract

Writing in a second or foreign language seems to be the most difficult language skill for language learners to acquire (Laksmi, 2006; Lestari, 2008; Negari, 2011). Some scholars proposed the implementation of SFL – genre based approach in teaching writing (Derewianka, 1990; Rothery, 1996). However, SFL genre based approach seems to be product or teaching outcomes oriented (Ahn, 2012; Emilia, 2011). Therefore, the concept of scaffolding in which possible supports the process of students‟ individual development is important to be emerged in the teaching stages of SFL – GBA (Bodrova Leong, 1998; Mulatsih, 2011). As a result, This study focuses on the issue of scaffoldings in the teaching of writing discussion texts based on SFL – Genre Based Approach. It particularly aims to investigate how scaffolding processes are implemented in the teaching of writing discussion texts based on SFL-GBA and how they improve the students‟ writing performance. The data rely on teaching and learning process in a classroom with six students in a tertiary level as the focus participants. The method used in the data analysis adopted a qualitative design with reference especially to the theory of the scaffolding and SFL-GBA. The results of analysis show that scaffolding processes are implemented in terms of macro and micro scaffoldings and able to improve the students‟ writing performance specifically in terms of social function, schematic structures, and language features of discussion genre. It is recommended that future related research should be conducted in more diverse of educational settings to see how scaffoldings are implemented in a variety of teaching practices. Keywords: scaffolding, discussion texts, SFL, genre-based approach.

Abstract

Multimodal literacy instruction is such a new shift of the literacy in which the construction of knowledge is led to be more socially and contextually bounded. Due to the urgency that teachers have to own multimodal competencies, this study aimed to investigate EFL teachers’ competence in interpreting visual-verbal relations to teach multimodal texts. To collect the data, an online test through the Google form platform was distributed. As many as 43 responses were collected from junior and senior high school teachers in one of the cities in Indonesia. A semi-structured interview was also conducted with six purposive participants. The data in this research were then analysed based on Royce’s criteria of image-text relation. The analysis found that the teachers only partially possessed multimodal competencies. It means that that they had used images to help them teach the texts but had insufficient knowledge on how to utilize the images as meaning-making sources. Then, based on the finding, it is suggested that the teachers should improve their competences in interpreting multimodal meanings in texts, so images are used not only for making learning materials interesting but also for making more meanings from the texts.

Abstract

This study entitled Kodi Lee in Online Media: How is Autism Represented? aims to reveal the representation of Kodi Lee, a savant autistic young man, in three different online media, namely Good Housekeeping US, The Wrap, and HuffPost. This study uses Halliday’s (1994) Systematic Functional Linguistic (SFL) focuses on Transitivity Analysis (TA) as the main analytical tool. Other theories uses to support the findings are representation (Hall, 1997), media representation (Orgad, 2012) and autism representation which includes savant autism (Prochnow, 2014) and mothering and autism (Stevenson, 2008). The findings show that material processes are dominantly used on the three websites. Material processes are used to describe Kodi’s talents. Meanwhile, from the analysis of verbal processes, it is evident that Kodi still cannot voice himself, even though he has some talents to be proud of, which on the same time contradicts with Clarke’s (2011) study. This study also finds that representations of Kodi are different on each media. Good Housekeeping US represents Kodi as a talented person with disabilities who stands behind his mother shadow. The Wrap represents Kodi as an extraordinary disabled young man who has a very strong bond with his mother, while HuffPost represents Kodi as a talented human being despite his disabilities. These results show despite Kodi’s claim as a savant autistic young man, the media still emphasize his disabilities to represent him. Keywords: autism, representation, savant autism, transitivity analysis

Abstract

Cyberbullying has gained more concern among linguists and law enforcers due to its negative impacts on its victim. Aside from that, bullies can also face serious legal consequences. This study attempts to identify legal consequences of the cyberbullies’ language use as evidenced on Twitter by identifying the attitudinal systems used by the bullies. This followed a qualitative design involving categorizing data and examining the relationship between the categories. The data were 52 tweets, which consisted of bullying elements towards non-specific persons (students from an institution) from Twitter. The data were then categorized into Martin and White’s (2005) attitudinal system. The analysis found the languages of attitudes used by the bullies including 1) judgement (69%), 2) appreciation (18%), and 3) affect (13%). The findings of this study were discussed under the Laws of Information and Electronic Transaction, and viewed from forensic linguistic perspective. Keywords: Cyberbullying, Bullies, Twitter, Attitudes, Forensic Linguistics.

Abstract

Research on text modifications has been around since the 80s until the present day. These studies have come a long way from manual text modification methods to the use of computerized models in its present form. However, there seems to be no resolution to the question of whether modified texts can help language learning. This study went back to the basics, manually modifying a text to find out whether it can help non-native English readers’ English reading comprehension. A text taken from a semiotic textbook was modified using the text modification strategies outlined by Parker Chaudron (1987). The text was then given to an experiment group comprising of 7th semester students studying linguistics at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Having read the text, these students were given a written test alongside a questionnaire. Their scores and their attitudes toward the modified text (from the written test the questionnaire, respectively) were taken to measure and compare with the scores and attitudes of a control group reading the original text. The results showed a difference between the scores of students in the control group and those in the experiment group, with the latter having more students who scored high. There are also more students in the experiment group with a positive attitude toward the text they read compared to those in the control group. However, the difference in scores proved to be statistically not significant, and also most students who viewed the modified text positively scored low on the written test. Keywords: Elaboration of text, simplification of text, text modifications

Abstract

The complexity of advertisements meanings realized by selected images and words always leads to multiple interpretations. This study attempts to examine the meaning representation in the Korean skincare advertisements intended for males. This study follows Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996; 2006) systemic functional approach to multimodal discourse analysis to reveal the representational meanings from the advertisements. The data sources were three Korean skincare advertisements namely “UL.OS”, “Dandyguy”, and “Power Perfection BB Cream” selected to instantiate how verbal and visual data deliver representational meanings. Following SFL -Multimodal discourse analysis, this study focused on identifying ideational meanings of the intermodal relations in terms of their representation, interaction, and composition.  The findings showed that the intermodal relations of the Korean male skincare advertisements relied on the meanings conveyed by the elected images. The images presented a typical masculinity showing the Korean cultural identities. The meanings were complemented through the choices of verbal, material, and circumstance. This study suggests that the advertisements represent cultural identity being constructed by the choice of visual images.
