Abstract

The aim of this study is to collaborate on the Self Directed Learning model through the use of moodle technology media in which the learning model can enhance the quality and effectiveness of student learning independently so that students can use technology devices in a correct and proper way. This study utilizes a quantitative approach to the design of OneGroup Pretest-Posttest Design with a pre-experimental research technique. The researcher used cluster samples in the process of collecting samples. The data collected from this study was further analyzed and conclusions were reached using the Prerequisite Test of Analysis and the Paired T-Test Test for hypotheses. The findings of the study with the descriptive statistical analysis showed that the pre-test average value was lower than the post-test average, in description there were differences in the average learning outcomes between the pre-test and post-test. Based on the results of the Paired T-Test statistics, Ha is accepted as having  t-count value (13,691) greater than T-table (2,131). The results of the pre-testand post-testing are differenced on average so there is a significant effect of self-directed learning using moodle to improve student learning achievement in academic writing skills. The average value of the experimental class was included in a sufficient category, according to calculated results from Gain-scores. It means learning through self-directed e-learning is quite effective in order to improve students ' academic writing abilities. Self-directed learning through Moodle and learning resources are quite effective and efficient in improving student learning and can encourage students to learn on-campus as well as at home, train students to be ready for learning, allow students to participate actively during face to face teaching and learning activities so that students can enhance learning outcomes.

Abstract

Language maintenance is one of the efforts that can be done to keep regional languages from extinction. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of language maintenance of Batak Toba and Karo languages of middle age  teenager  of 15-18 years at Kwala Bekala District, Medan. The method used in collecting data is the ‘cakap semuka technique’ using a questionnaire distributed to informants and continued with interview. This research data assessment method uses quantitative methods and the data is analyzed using sociolinguistic theory. From the results of the study it was found that the maintenance of Batak Toba Language among middle age teenager of 15-18 year old at Kwala Bekala district  XVII was (30 %) and the maintenance of Karo Language of middle age teenager of 15-18 at  Kwala Bekala district XVII was (58 %). It can be concluded that the maintenance of Karo language among middle age teenager of 15-18 years old is higher than the maintenance of Batak Toba language among middle age teenager of 15-18 years at Kwala Bekala Medan.

Abstract

This study was aimed to identify t The Effectiveness of Using Communicative Approach in Teaching the Simple Past Tense. This research employed quantitative research method. The design of the collecting the data that used in research are, questioner method, test method, library method, observation method and interview method. This research was conducted at class of second year students of SMPN 12 Batam in the academic year 2018/2019.  As for the time the researched held on 31 March 2019 until 25 May 2019. In this research, the populations of the study were students in second year students at SMPN 12 Batam in the academic year 2018/2019. There were  students from two classes, whereas the samples are 62 students, where 30 students from class VIII-4 (control class) and 32 students from VIII-5 ( the experiment class). This research was concluded that the effectiveness of using communicative approach in teaching the simple past tense: A case study of second year students at SMPN 12 BATAM in the academic years 2018/2019. The result was the calculation of the t-test, it was obtained that the t-observed was 5.506 and t-table was 2.042 at the level of significant 0, 05. It was obtaining that t- observed t-table, it means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Ho rejected.

Abstract

This study aims at gathering information about necessities, lacks, and wants of the students on ICT-based English for Nursing Students materials as a part of needs analysis with a descriptive qualitative method. The subject was the students of Nursing Department. The data were obtained from primary sources including a questionnaire (both closed-ended and open-ended questionnaire) and secondary sources including an observation. The results of this study showed that (1) students' necessities on ICT-based English for Nursing Students materials were for communication purposes in daily life both written and spoken; (2) the lacks of ICT knowledge were the abilities to operate the media and technology applications in the learning process; of language skill were a communication skill and an understanding for the language used on website or application, (3) students’ wants on ICT based English for Nursing Students materials were proper internet facilities in campus, supporting teaching and learning facilities,  Web and online-based learning activities, and online-based assessments and grades. All shows that students are welcome to the use of ICT-based learning materials in the classroom at a moderate level.

Abstract

The aim of this research were; to validate materials for teaching discourse analysis by using systemic functional linguistic approach and to describe  practicality of  materials for teaching discourse analysis by using systemic functional linguistic approach in English education department of IAIN Padangsidimpuan. This research was Research and Development which aimed to create a material design of Discourse Analysis based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. This research used 4D Model with the process define, design, develops and dissemination. The sample of this research was 20 students of English Education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Padangsidimpuan on eighth semester. The technique for collecting the data was observation, questionnaire, interview and test. The result showed that the research of material design development categorized into valid according to validators and students’ questionnaire. The content of textbook had been appropriate with the competencies on the syllabus, and the component had been appropriate with the elements that had been determined. The materials for teaching Discourse Analysis had been practical. It could be seen from the learning process, the content, time allocation and student’s needs. The Discourse Analysis materials based on Systemic Functional Linguistic was been effective.

Abstract

Technology movement creates progressive impacts towards the development of communication network, computer, and the Internet. An innovation that is known as Artificial Intelligence (AI,) is one of many products. The usage of AI technology is predicted to expand globally, including in Indonesia. The influence of AI technology on improving the effectiveness of e-Learning concepts enables integration into the advancement of the education system in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the potential and impact of applying AI technology in e-Learning, and the readiness of various factors that influence the education system and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Indonesia. The discussion is based on secondary data and comprehensive observations of the prevailing learning structure.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to measure the difficulties faced by Non- English lecturers of universitas riau kepulauan on using machine translation on writing article. It is a qualitative research by using descriptive analysis. Questionnaire was used to collect data; the questionnaire was shared to all lecturers of Riau Kepulauan University, as the respondents. Based on the questionnaires, it was found that there are some difficulties such as idiom, not accordance with the principle of translation and sometimes the word cannot be found on the google translation

Abstract

This research is aimed to know students’ motivation and problems in learning English in Effective English Conversation Course (EECC). The design of this research was descriptive qulitative. The sample was 15 students. The research instruments in this research were tests and questionnaire. The results of finding showed that 1) students’ intrinsic motivation in learning was high namely 12 students (80%).  2) students’ extrinsic motivation in learning English was high namely 12 students (80%). 3) students’ problems in learning English were in listening skill (85%), reading skill (56%), and writing skill (57%) as category high. 4) students’ ability in learning English was 66 as category average. It is recommended that the teachers pay attention to the students’ motivation and problems in learning English because it influenced to the students’ ability.

Abstract

The purposes of this research is to investigate the achievement and improvement of students’ English-speaking ability at the eleventh-grade students of SMK 4 LPPM RI Padalarang. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design in this research. The instruments are tests. The tests were done twice to the experimental class and the control class. They are pre-test and post-test. The data were calculated using Microsoft Office Excel 2019 and IBM SPSS 25. There are 30 students in each class. The total of the population is 60 students. The results of the research showed that from the implementation of Cooperative Script Method at the eleventh-grade students of SMK 4 LPPM RI Padalarang, the students’ English-speaking ability are improved significantly. It can be seen from the post-test mean score achievement. It can be concluded that the students’ English-speaking ability improvement who learned using Cooperative Script Method are better than students who learned using Problem-Based Learning. The implementation of Cooperative Script Method is effective in teaching speaking.

Abstract

Facing the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 in which technology has become the daily basis of human life, English has become inevitably significant. In fact, it is really needed in the health sector, especially medical laboratory technology which adopted advanced technology, and thus requires the medical technologist to be able to accomplish human to human and human to machine interactions. This study aimed to identify the language proficiency of students of medical laboratory technology. The population of this study was the students of Akademi Kesehatan John Paul II Pekanbaru. The instrument used in this study is test. The results indicated that the overall performance was still categorized in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 337 to 443. In the first two sections, listening comprehension and structure and written expression, most of the students’ proficiency was classified in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 38-49 and 33-43 respectively. In the last section, reading comprehension, all students’ proficiency was classified in the lowest level (A2) with the scores ranging from 31-47. In conclusion, students’ language proficiency was still categorized in the basic level or waystage
